If I really needed super kick-ass staff view functionality, I could justify spending a couple hundred dollars on a program that does that REALLY well.

This sums it up for me as well.  Many who master their own material in Sonar still buy high end third party despite the fact that Sonar actually has great tools for mastering.  Fighting for something that will probably never be as good as a flagship third party program that you really need and want seems like wasted effort.

Re: Plea of Support to all users of sonar. 2016/11/22 12:26:01 (permalink)
I just bought Sonar Pro, after having used Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for over 15 years. I always really liked the Staff view from Cakewalk 9, because it was simple and clean yet very powerful and productive, more than Sibelius and Finale. I am very disappointed not only to see that the Staff view in Sonar Pro hasn't improved much, it even seems to have detoriated from Cakewalk 9. These are a few of the problems in the Staff view that really slow down my productivity:

- Snap to grid doesn't work in Staff view
- There are no keyboard shortcut functions to toggle between dotted (on/off) and/or triplets (on/off)
- In Paste special: when choosing "slide over old", repetitions of the copied material are not taken into account, so all repetitions are pasted into the old material
- In Paste special: when choosing "slide over old", very frequently double notes are created in the old material
- In Paste special: when specifying a destination track it is ignored, instead it is pasted in the track that happened to be selected before opening the Paste menu

This is very frustrating. Actually, I'm going back to my old Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for creating my arrangements.

I really don't ask for very fancy Staff functionality, I just want the functionality that Cakewalk used to have back. Otherwise, it looks like I wasted €179 last week.

Hello. Personally I can't help sort through those issues because I don't actually use Staff View (yet). However it should be noted that SONAR 2016 is quite a bit different than Pro Audio 9. I'm guessing that at least some of the problems you are experiencing could be solved by brushing up on the new manual to see if anything has changed for your specific workflow.

Also there are quite a few Staff View users around here who seem to do alright so if you start your own thread(s) about these issues you might be able to get some help/insight as to what might be going on.

In a thread like this your comment will likely just get buried.

Good luck.

I still think that Cakewalk should crowdfund the development of the notation editor.
I understand that as a company they only want to invest in development they are certain will maximize their return; they should name an amount of money they think is worth their while and then we all can contribute.
To make it more fun they can offer incentives and bonus products, etc...
I can't think of a better solution, TBH

One thing to do when buying a product is look at the reviews. read the reviews about Staff view. They are blunt and they are not hiding the fact.. Cakewalk has been up front and mentioned many times.. there will be no improvements to Staff view.

I don't use it, but you know it wouldn't kill me or bother me if cakewalk decided to upgrade a few of the features in
Staff view. It would help out the people who do use it. However, it would also take away from other features
that could be developed, ones that could be used by more Cakewalk users.
Myself, I use the Piano roll view for any type of midi editing.
And if they decided to stop doing upgrades to PRV, or I found it to be functionless. I would buy something else or buy a 3rd party software. That's just my opinion.

I promised to myself I wouldn't post in this thread. But I just want to say this. I see this a little differently. Its a long standing part of Sonar. I think a part shouldn't remain under developed when it could be developed in such a way that no other area is impacted yet it could have the same look and ease of use that it could share with Cubase and Logic. I don't expect it to have the power as those or the functionality as they do but it really needs some attention.

I also believe that with a revamped Staff View CW would attract academic users. It already has a great GUI overall it only lacks a compelling Staff View. That I think is holding it back from adoption by colleges and universities. As it stands now only grade schools would be happy with what it offers to music teachers.

Best

Have they really made that definitive an announcement about it Chuck? I knew it was on the back burner but didn't think it had been entirely abandoned.

I don't currently use staff view as it just has too many quirks, but would certainly use it if it got a little love and worked consistently.

If things that used to work have stopped working, they are now code "bugs".

Users with supported versions of Sonar need to open support tickets, which will direct some eyeballs onto the problem.  That is the only way resources will be allocated that can do something about it.

Complaining here or requesting feature updates is wasting your time.  Features may be implemented "someday", but without guarantee or timetable.

If it broke, get it fixed.  It's on you to report it to the correct place.

No I guess not.
Bill Jackson [Cakewalk]
In the spirit of being totally honest, though... I will admit that there are no current developments to the Staff View in progress.

and you know what else seems to be "definitive", every time one of these threads is brought up it PO's people and rubs them the wrong way. Similar to the guy who just bought Sonar and did no research about staff view but yet rants on..
and similar to myself who is done here. Have fun.
