bapu: the code's still 32-bit, just the registry keys have been corrected for 64-bit machines. It'll run on either platform.

However, your ISP kicked it back as a security risk. Sorry. After I've gotten some feedback from others who are trying it out, and I get some verification that it works on other computers than my own, I'll post it up on dropbox.

Thanks Dave.

I'll test it for you. It should go real quick. How hard can it be to find 7 vsts?

Depends.

Have they been ARC'd or drumagogged?

And if it's ARC 2 it could be more complicated.

Thanks for the feedback, Michael. After I've heard from a few others who are also trying it out, and assuming it works for everybody, I'll post it somewhere so anyone can download it.

In the meantime, I've emailed it to a dozen people but some of those emails were kicked back (all to gmail addresses, I think) as a "security risk". I was sending a zip file, not a naked exe, but those clever fellows at Google weren't fooled. They opened the zip file, found an executable and decided you weren't smart enough to decide whether you wanted it or not.

So apologies to anyone who asked for a copy and didn't get one.

Re: Plugin Inventory 2014/12/04 14:16:42 (permalink)
Also got a reply from another person who said it worked OK and suggested adding a column to identify VST3 plugins. Thanks for that, Eurig.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to definitively identify a VST3 plugin because I don't have any. Yes, it's usually in the product or file name, but I can't assume that's always the case. So if anybody who's comfortable poking around the registry could have a look and see if there's maybe a registry key that flags VST3s, or check the DLL headers for identifiers, that would help.

Looking at the registry, I see a flaw in the program, which is that it assumes the data is under "SONAR Producer". I'm guessing the program fill fail if you're running a different edition. Maybe somebody who's running SONAR Studio could verify where the VST inventory resides for them. I'm guessing it's HKCU\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Studio\Cakewalk VST\Inventory for 32-bit O/Ss and "Cakewalk VST x64" for 64-bit O/Ss.

Once I know every possible path, I can just have the program check them all so it won't matter which version of SONAR you're running. Currently, it just checks the 32- and 64-bit paths for SONAR Producer. It's a 32-bit program so it'll run under any Windows version.

Re: Plugin Inventory 2014/12/04 14:24:40 (permalink)
VST3 plug-ins have the extension .vst3 instead of .dll
The also must be installed in either "C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST3"

To find all the inventory locations you are going to have to traverse "HKCU\Cakwalk Music Software" looking for "Cakewalk VST*" (if you follow my shorthand), using the position of  the "Cakewalk VST" or "Cakewalk VST X64" you have found as a guide. That way it will work for Music Creator too. Or you could just hard code it for the current release of SONAR, ignoring the name changes in the recent past like Essential.

I understood him to say he doesn't know how to find them since he has none.

I was pointing out that he owns products that IIRC do allow him to install some that he can learn to "find" in his scanner.

By scanner I meant vstscan.exe in SONAR. Bit is using the Cakewalk VST Inventory in the registry for his tool. Installing the plug-ins is not going to get them into the SONAR 8.5 VST Inventory.

OK, that's a key bit of information, that the files do not have .DLL extensions. That should make it easy, although I'll be shooting in the dark, being unable to test it directly. Fortunately, several brave souls have offered to test for me, so I'll give it a go.

One question for you guys: do the VST3s get identical entries in the registry as VST2s? Except, obviously, for the filename.

Maybe somebody who has some VST3s installed could export their Inventory and email it to me? That is, open regedit, navigate to HKCU\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\Cakewalk VST x64\Inventory and then right-click and select "Export". That will put it into a .reg file that's an email-able text file.

EDIT: Yes, Steve. I didn't see your offer before writing the above request. An export of the Inventory key would be helpful.

Re: Plugin Inventory 2014/12/04 18:21:11 (permalink)
Thanks, Steve, that was just what I needed. Newer SONAR installations add a new "isVst3" registry value, and the old "isVst" value is now taken to mean VST2 specifically. That piece of information allowed me to modify the code so that it should - in theory - pull out information from VST3 plugins as well. Waiting to hear back from the the two guinea pigs I sent the new build to, as I can't test it myself.

Re: Plugin Inventory 2014/12/04 21:23:18 (permalink)
I just tried VST Inventory. I had to install an old Excel (Office 2000) since I use LibreOffice thses days.
I used a PC with Win 7 x64 with Sonar X3eP (both x64 and x86).
As far as I can tell, it found everything Sonar knows about.
It found and distinguished between the x86 and x64 versions .
It found my VST3's ...about 15 of these. 278 Plugins in all.
I especially like that it displays the plugin version and the file location.
Only one suggestion, If you take it mainstream, add a CSV file output.
Great job Dave.

Re: Plugin Inventory 2014/12/04 21:51:52 (permalink)
Yeah, I'm going to make a text output option for those who don't have Excel installed on their DAWs. It'll be automatic; I'll just have the program check to see if Excel is present and output text if it isn't. CSV makes sense because you can then easily import it into a database or spreadsheet. A formatted text file is almost as easy to do, then you could open it in Notepad right on your DAW. I didn't want to create a UI for it, but I may have to.

Thanks to everybody who tried it out and reported back. Some of those I gave the VST3-compatible version to may notice a bogus "(0)" at the end of the vendor names. I discovered that Win 8 was doing that after I'd emailed those out. It's since been fixed.

Hi Dave, when I began working from home, my company had me run a PC audit program from Belarc, which made a detailed listing of my machine. I sort of freaked from it as it also pulled the serial numbers from programs, so I manually removed those serials before I gave them the output. But it occurred to me that in the case of a complete system crash without a backup image, that such a listing would be usable for some VSTs.

Edit: I just ran Belarc again to check, but it does not pull any VST serials at all.

Thanks Bit

The little dude works fine.  I like a spread sheet as the output. Easy to sort, easy to add columns. Too many of the plugs have names that need description.

Only weirdness was for melodyne: it was listed twice. First line had "0" for inputs and outputs.
The second line has "2" for both, no version number and no size:
c:/audiocommon/VST3/Celemony/Melodyne/Melodyne.vst3*0   Melodyne
A bunch do not have versions numbers, and other stuff. I figger they are hiding from your scrutiny. The Reaper plugs show nothing of the internal info.
