JBL LSR6325P's paired with a Focal 10" sub as my main mix speakers, and a pair of the older KRK Rocket 5's as my B-Mix speakers.

I had the original JBL 25P's (the older silver ones) and they were VERY fatiguing. I can record or mix for 8-10 hours on the new version without any issues. The KRK's are great "other" monitors... I don't trust them as a main set of speakers (mostly because the JBL's are SO accurate), but they're perfect for a 2nd set.

I never liked the Mackie HR824's because the bottom end sounds plastic to me, but I certainly can't deny the number of excellent mixes that have been made on them. Lots of people getting great results on 824's.

Are you having the humm problem ? Not from the speaker but from the cabinet. Listen close to the area were the power supply is... is there any hum of any kind ? Some folks on the Mackie forum have reported problems with the 8s and I'm just wondering if the 5s do it too. I'd like to get the 5s cause like you I don't have room for the 8s.

my fostex s are pmo 5. they are small. the woofer looks to be about
6". they are powerd. i really like theyre sound. the lowes are smooth
and the highs are sweet. but i cant hear any defintion in the high mids.
say about 2 to 6k.

there high end is sweeter and smoother than my roland ds7 s
and the lows are punchyer too even though they are smaller
but thats in the area of 300 or so herz. (or maybe 150)

ive read in the past that you have to be aware of this low mid
bump on these monitors i have (the pmo5). so the bump and lack
of a clear high mid. makes it hard to (for me) to mix on.

they sound as differrent as night and day between them and my ds7s
mixing on my rolands and playing on the fostex sounds great.
mixing on the fostex and playing on the rolands sounds horible.

i have boss, jbl, sony, klh setup too to switch between for a check.
they all reaveal a little something differrent. so i like them all for
a check but the fostex have a sweet high end.

or should i say smooth. it seems they arent acurate but revealing
they are. i bought them at a music store one day and two days later
im back looking for something better. but i did keep them.
and glad i did.

i can only speculate but id say mixing on them may make the mix
a little brittle. or maybe thats just me

I use NS 10Ms - I know what they're supposed to sound like.
I have JBL 4312s - I need to have a mid range speaker replaced from cranking guitar too loud in it I suppose.
Got a pair of Rat Shack Optimus - for a check mix budget speaker.

I've also got a Yamaha sub under my desk for comfort when I'm tracking. I play bass so I miss the low end on the NS 10s. It helps me hype the sound a little bit and not load up the bottom end.

my fostex s are pmo 5.

Ah, thank you for your detailed answer. I have the PM-1's, as stated, and I never really noticed any of that - then again, I don't have the wealth of comparative options that you have.

I will do some investigation, see if I can find some good way to check that distribution. Not out of real worry, mind you - I am exceedingly pleased with them.

One of my sets of Sennheiser cups has pretty intense highs, and the Fostexes are much smoother by comparison, so I think these are fine.

This is EXACTLY the reason I have a sub, and why I have it set louder than it should be. I mix so I likeses it in the studio, and then it translates REALLY well everywhere else.

I have KRK Rokit 8's Before that it was just stereo speakers. When I got these they made mixing a lot easier for me. Not to get off the subject but I am questioning my dac's in my fw1884's control surface though for the most accurate sound . I think the KRK's are fine and they have good reviews but I still think my overall sound is lacking and am looking to see what options there might be as far as better converter options that will interface with the FW1884.

I have been using the KRK Rokit 5's the past few months and really like them for a small, affordable monitor, but realize I'm going to need something more substantial as I get into mastering.

Left over from my old music store that closed in the 90's, I have a pair of rare vintage JBL 4502 studio monitors (which are pretty massive) that I've occasionally used as stereo speakers the past 15 years. I just purchased a used Alesis RA-100 power amp on Ebay to give these JBL's a test run in my home studio. I was surprised that they sounded a little thin -not as much bass as the little Rokits. I'm wondering if the power amp might be defective or just a crappy design. I figured those old JBL's would really rock. I might be best off selling the JBL's and use the $$ to get studio monitors that are a little more contemporary (for what I'm trying to achieve.)

If you are at 8 ohms it does not put out 100 but only 75 watts. That may be a little underpowered for the JBL's. Maybe hook them up to something heftier before you dump them, could be worth it.

Have used too many brands/models over the years to list, but for my latest home studio (I setup a couple of years ago) I chose the Dynaudio BM5As and absolutely LOVE them. My budget for monitors at the time was around $1000 tops (paid $850), and I personally don't believe there are better sounding or more accurate monitors available at the time for the money -- no regrets.

If I were buying today, I would have to A/B them against the the Adam A7s which are a little more expensive but possibly worth it. Of course having a well-treated listening environment and great audio interface helps, too.

Checking the vintage JBL Studio Monitors further, the 15" speakers don't seem to be working correctly. I'm going to have someone qualified to check them out and repair/rebuild if needed. Then, I will likely sell them on Ebay, and use the money to get something newer. The Dynaudio BM5A's and Adam A7s that Houndawg mentions in the post above both seem mighty tempting.

In the meantime, the KRK Rokit 5's I'm using are really pretty amazing speakers for the price. I would highly recommend them someone looking for a pair in the $300 price range.

Yes. I use V-Vocal and I push and pull wave transients into position too. I don't care about cheating if the recording sounds good.

Probably a new one for the list:

Hafler M5's (passive), powered by a Hafler TA-1600. No longer available, and a pretty sweet combination too, to me at least! They're perfect for my small space. (Eat your heart out, all you collectors out there.) Now I just hope I don't blow them out...

Also, using a pair of Alison Acoustics 8" passive subs driven with an Alesis RA-150. The M5's have just a 5 1/4" driver and they get weak below about 70 Hz, so the subs really help. I picked up the Alison's on closeout from Parts Express. I bypassed the internal passive crossovers, stuffed them with acoustic foam. They're pretty special because they're closed cabinets (no port) and they have a really tight transient response. (Near-field, those things can put a spike in your chest!) I drive the setup through an electronic crossover to get good balance and phase alignment at the crossover point.
