Mains are Urei 809s with rebuilt cross-overs, thus far I have not played a lot with the component values, but using better components made a nice difference. These are powered by a Crown PS400.

Primary nearfields are Yorkville YSM-1s powered by a Haffler DH-220.

Secondary nearfields are these old Toa RS-21Ms, which are similar to the old Auratones, these are powered by a Crown D60.

When I have some spare change I'd really like to upgrade the nearfield monitors to a self-powered version of the YSM or possibly the Wharfedale studio monitors (can't think of the model number.) I'd also really love to add a pair of Haffler TRM-8s, but they are getting difficult to find.

I'm currently using a pair of Event Studio Precision 8 Monitors. I had a pair of Behringer Truth 2301A's Monitors but they were stolen. I use to have a pair of Event 20/20 but they were just too bottom heavy.

Good sound : Samson Resolv 65A's

Crappy sound : Altec Lansing Series 500 (PC speakers)

If it works on the crappy sound, then it "should" be excellent on the good sound.

Cheers,
Jerry

Frank - I don't have any reference to any other monitors because the truths were the first "real" studio monitors I bought - the previous ones I had were the m-audio DX-4's, but I really like the truths for what that's worth. they seem to translate fairly well into other systems. my only problem seems to be in the 150Hz range - but that is from my room - and the bass traps haven't helped that enough.

Well, my room is going to be bad too, there is just no good place in my house to do this kind of work but I'm going to get the same ones you have so maybe we can compare notes after I get some hours in front of them.

My room doesn't suck....and neither do my monitors any more.

I finally dumped the KRK Rokit 8's for the Focal Twin6 Be set.

From this point forward, I only have myself to blame.....

LOL, I guess they didn't get the memo . The Truth monitors are probably the best product that Behringer has ever made. They really sound great!!! I took the monitors over to the church to use temporarily and someone broke in and stole them along with a Roland keyboard amp that I had over there as well. They did reimburse me for everything.

I have them hooked up !  I could instantly hear my mixes were all messed up. No more mixing with headphones for me.  I'm going to use them for a while with my SoundCraft Compact 4 mixer till my SM Pro Audio m-patch 2 gets here. That will give me a chance to see if I hear a differnce. So far so good.

OP, Put me down for Behringer B2031A monitors.

good deal!

good placement is imperative as well - I was surprised at how much better they sounded when I moved them in my room.  I originally had my desk along the long wall instead of the short wall.  when I moved my desk and put the monitors pointing toward the long end of the room and moved them out from the wall some, the sound difference was incredible!

Yeah I noticed that even walking around the room the bass can go way up in spots. I just don't have the space to get them set up correctly. However, even with bad placement my first mix on them sounded great in the car this morning.

Hey, cool that those monitors worked out. If I ever need another pair of 'em, I may look in that direction. (BTW, if anyone's still in the market, you can get B2031A's pretty cheap at Provantage these days.)

Yup - welcome to the world of bass management. Getting good translation is always a good thing, and that's definitely what matters most. But when you get tired of fighting with uneven or unpredictable bass, then adding bass traps may be your next adventure.

P.S. Whoa... new forum interface! It's gotten all up-town all of a sudden! Now you can:

I got mine for $299 with free shipping for B&H. Provantage looks cheaper at first but shipping to Texas would be $40 so It would have been 84 cents more. Woo Hoo ! I made a good choice and saved..... 84 cents...

...as I've said in the past, most home studio owners haven't used a lot of different monitors other than test driving them at GC or whatever, so opinions on monitors are not necessarily the most accurate unless you've worked with different monitors like in different studios. JMO.

Unfortunately, this is true.  It's an unfortunate reality that makes me feel sad and tired whenever I think about monitors.  I think my strategy is going to be one that I've seen others adopt:  Use two or three sets of monitors in the studio, and test-drive mixes in other venues -- headphones, car stereos, compact systems, computer speakers, etc., to get a broader perspective on how the stuff sounds on common equipment that most people use.

That's what a lot of home studios do, and I've given that advice before.  99.9999% of home studios don't have a perfect room or the best monitors, so it's always good practice to listen on several different mediums and take notes and adjust the mix from there.

I trust my single set of monitors down to about 50-60 hz, below that I check on a decent set of phones. The mixes actually translate pretty well. For a small home studio, I think it's really the most practical way to go...you'll just never get the bass right in a small room otherwise...just physically impossible.

I'm stuck in the past, but my foot's tapping forward

Yessir you is so right...I've had Event 20/20's (active) for years and in 3 home studios. They sounded great and found out they were very true until my recent move.
I now have a much bigger studio 28 X 18 with a beautiful cathedral ceiling and windows that go all the way to the roof/ceiling...but the lows are herendous!!!
Anyone have any suggestions for cheap bass traps...what I've Googled are ridiculously priced.
Thanks,
Randy

i guess my built in pc speakers make for bad monitors, especially when i hear loud beeping noises mixing in with the music.

i like the look of these Edirol monitors... Edirol MA-15D

any other suggestions in the same price range?  say under $300 for a pair of monitors.

Blue Sky Media Desk (an integrated 2.1 system).  I'm thinking of moving (up?) to something like the JBL LSR 4328's.  The Blue Sky system can be sub-heavy if you're not careful--I've been having trouble with the bass end of recent mixes.
