100% agree with Gordon. Less is best. When you have 24 recordings on the go and some are different styles etc, you don't have time to endlessly experiment with alternate takes and weirdness.
We strive to develop a style and know what our tools will do to get a great recording without fuss.
A  a great performance, good quality signal chain,  good quality gear and a  good operator will make a great recording. Anything less will be less.
I lust after a good compressor, I'm stuck with the crappy digital gizmos in my o1v..poooh... turn them off, turn them off....

That's more like it but less.  As I said above, unless you have a specific gain problem, lower end electronics aren't going to improve the sound for the most part.  A nice (read expensive) piece of hardware can impart some nice sound quality to track even without being used as a comp or doing Eq etc.  So, unless you have a techical reason to go through a comp during recording, the software stuff is likely to be as good, if not better.

I haven't heard the mx, so I'm loath to make a judgement on how you'd find it.  I do know my Komit comp/limiters are useful with a limiter after the comp, allowing all kinds tricks.

SOME low end hardware devices sound quite good.  Personally, I just have a thing for hardware though.  Software compressors just seem to have something missing, even good emulations of hardware.

I used to compress on the way in.  Now I record dry and I'm getting better results.  My new signal chain just sounds better.  Now I wish that I had recorded my previous recordings dry.  The advances in software plugins will continue to occur and if you record dry you can take advantage of those future technologies later.

I know a producer that records with a U47 dry, and then uses outboard gear for compression later.  He gets great results.  He can also take advantage of new and improved outboard gear too.
