alewgro i just wish there was a way that FX names in the FX Bins can use the name I give it in my custom Plugin-In Layout over the actual VST registered name, as I like my names better.
Absolutely. That would eliminate the problem altogether!

You can and it works for me (with a proviso): rename the plug-in in the middle pane of the plug-in manager and use a custom menu. You have to do *both* for the plug-in to use your name in the FX bin. And, yes, it works for VST3's here (Melda and Cakewalk CA2A are the only ones I've tried with).
Proviso: SONAR is sometimes too smart when you have names starting with the same root and displays the difference in the FX bin (eg. If I have 2 plug-ins named Reverb (Cakewalk) and Reverb (non-Cakewalk), it will display the part in brackets).
Actually, second proviso: some DX effects can't be renamed in plug-in manager unless you run it as admin because of registry key security (Sonitus FX and Cakewalk MFX are like this).

I've done this before, but then sometimes Sonar decides to re-scan your VSTs and all the names revert... not sure why that would happen, but I have seen that happen before. great workaround though. Woah, it appears in the new version, if you rename a VST in that middle column (that effects the registered name), it reverts back right away, it doesnt stick!

I don't know if you can do this with waves... but most *.dll plugins can be renamed at the window's directory level. I operated by doing that for quite a while - it became troublesome in 2 areas. One was plugin updates and the second problem was older projects not seeing those plugs.

That doesn't for me (except for some DX and MFX as above); works as expected.

Yeah, some users are seeing this behavior and some aren't. I still have an open ticket with Cakewalk, sonar won't save/keep name changes made to my FabFilter VST3 plugins.

Thanks Just to make sure we are all on the same page.... All I want to do is precede all of my waves plugins with the name "waves" such as "waves rbass". When I change the name of the effect, Sonar allows me to, however it immediately reverts back to rbass. Thanks for opening the ticket with waves.

Yep, you and I want to rename for different reasons, but ultimately we've found that the renaming capabilities aren't behaving consistently so I had also directed tech support to this thread. I'll follow up when I hear more.

When you say immediately, what do you mean exactly? For instance, I rename the following way - what step does it rename after?
1 - Open Plug-in Manager 2 - Select VST in left pane 3 - Double click a VST name in middle pane 4 - Type a new name in text box that opens 5 - Click OK 6 - PIM reverts to state as at step 2 with plug-in renamed in middle pane
I'm assuming after step 6, no change has ocurred?

I'm confused - are you saying that when you select a VST effect in (3), a text rename box appears? The box with a title of "Friendly Name", that is. Also, if you run the PIM from within SONAR, you will indeed not get the FX renaming (I've just confirmed). Run it from outside. I consider plug-in management such an "admin" function that I'd never run it from inside SONAR, but do all plug-in management after installing/deleting/updating a plug-in (including renaming it). SONAR is then for music :-)

Ok this might be simpler. Open the plugin manager. Select a VST Audio Effects (VST) in the middle pane. Click on Plugin-Properties below the middle pane. Change the name in the upper dialog box. Click ok. What is the name of the VST Audio Effect (in the middle pane) that you just changed? For me - its the original name. It does not save This is scenario #1.

NOW.... Do what I did above - and then. Now go into plugin manager and select that SAME plugin. Click on properties and then look at details....WOW... there is the name that I typed. Its saved in Details but not saved as the name.

Correct - the list reloads after a rename, but scroll down to the VST, and it is NOT renamed

I give up then - I've just tried this inside and outside SONAR and it works as expected. All I can think of is it's a permissions issue somewhere in the registry.

I don't know how to post pictures, but here is a link to 3 pictures concerning what I'm doing. Pic 1. I open up my Pluggin menu. Select VST3 effects Audio Effects (VST3) (in my left pane) Randomly select a waves plugin (in my middle pane) - LowAir Stereo I click the Plug-In Properties button below the middle pane Pic 2. I change the name of the pluggin to Waves LowAir Stereo as shown I click the OK button on the bottom A spinning circle appears ( At this point the name in the middle box should have changed. ) Pic 3. LoAir Stereo still shows in the middle pane WHY? Waves LoAir Stereo properly displays in the Plug-In Property box? http://gtgsolar.com/PhotoAlbumsPro/Album_nn3rx9/#/0

Got it...those specific steps don't work for VST3s (but do for VST2s). Do it my way and it works for VST2s - double click the name rather than opening Plugin Properties.

Hi all. Still waiting to hear back from Cakewalk, but the folks at FabFilter got back to me and stated the VST3 renaming issue with their software is a known bug with Sonar and they've contacted them about it. So as we've seen, looks like a VST3 issue that'll hopefully get straightened out soon.

A problem report pertaining to this issue was filed moments ago. It is reproducible when using custom plugin layouts but seems not to occur when using the default plugin layout. Stay tuned
