I've sussed it out:
  • For good/helpful replies: ReWARD Points
  • For trolling (e.g. DK & PP): IntensiveCareWARD Points

And for fans of Batman:
  • BurtWARD Points

I did a little research to see if I could find out what other features this forum package might offer.

First, I noticed that CW has switched providers. The forum server has a new IP address and is hosted by amazon.com. I was not aware that Amazon even offered web hosting. This would explain why it took 2 days to switch over.

The forum software is the same as before, but this is a new version (3.5, released July 10) that features, among other things, better support for Firefox.

The vendor is Asp Playground. The release notes for version 3.5 are here. Surprisingly, the main claim is better efficiency and faster response. That has not been my experience, but it may not be the software's fault. Perhaps the new server isn't as snappy.

Some other new features:
- ability to find similar threads (?)
- embed attachments directly into a message
- can search for exact phrase (I thought you could do this all along, apparently not)

There is also a forum.

So what about the "reward points"? A search of their forum yielded only one mention (under "new features in version 3"):

Reward point system & Mark as answer - user can assign certain points to a question to reward the best answer. Different user groups get different reward points.

But if you're assigning points to a "question", how does that reward "answers"? Seems like you could have a great question with no good answers, or great answers to stupid questions.

And where the heck is the "Quote" button on this reply dialog???

Reward point system & Mark as answer

If they can come up with a way to really make this useful, fine, but I remember the experiment a few years back that turned into a disaster and was quickly scrapped. It's another one of those things (like not including "in reply to...") that could easily just result in more forum "noise".

Hi Beagle-

That brings up another issue someone's raised (mike_mccue?), 'cause I can't see clearly what you posted. The image is very compressed, and below "Total Posts" I see a tiny "ASPPlayground.net". I can't really make out the rest.

Thanks-

yeah - I saw mike's complaint about it and he's right - that makes it very difficult to post screen shots.

if you click on it, it will open a window that is better to see, but still not great.

Maybe we have to buy some CW products to get the points?
V-Studio 700 = 5 points
SONAR 9 (or whatever) = 1 point
Cubase = -100 points.

Something like that?

OK, serioulsy, anyone see apoint system like this anywhere else?
How would it apply here?

I've seen something like this in another forum I frequent, but there, it's called Reputation Power. There is a little icon under the forum member's name that a member can click on to add to that members Rep Power points. However, I don't see anything like that in this new forum look, so I don't know how we get Reward points here.

It is a good question. I'm wondering how Reward points are acquired, too.

I hope they junk the reward points ideal, I think it would cause some users, NEW USERS to start posting and making a contest for nothing at all, a waste of time and space in my opinion. A simple "Thank you" is reward enough if you are truly trying to help someone. JMO....
As for the Admins adding the points : "No offense Admins", but I'm sure there are strikes against some here "HINT", along with pluses, so there's no way it can be a fair ideal. JMO.....

All the way at the top right of the forum page there's an option to choose the "Forum Theme". Choose the "Under Construction " one and the points will be gone.

Solution to abuse: omit feature from coffeehouse.  Leave feature in where applicable.  Punish those who flagrantly abuse system.

Done.

Susan - I've already seen a "Most Helpful" being rewarded to a joke response in this forum. Obviously that's not going to help anything.

Reward point system & Mark as answer - user can assign certain points to a question to reward the best answer. Different user groups get different reward points.

The phrasing is weird but they obviously mean that the rewards are awarded to the best answer to a question.  Now, whatever they mean by "Different user groups get different reward points." is a mystery.
