You hit the nail on the head with your comments. I am Sonor devotee. I think it's a great system and I am involved with bug fixng as of now. But... we have to accept that we are only contributors. The system is not right. We must challenge the direction.

Yes it is. Download Reaper and be shocked. It's not perfect and I remain a sonar devotee. But.. My god there are some great ideas there. I can see 58 faders on one screen and they move so smoothly!

Talk about your evangelistic users, the prostylitizers of that platform totally turned me off last year. I'm sure there are some good ideas there. But I would say there are good ideas in every host on the market.

I downloaded Reaper for fun and too see where we could go. Its really good for mixing it has ideas and is challenging but I feel better with sonar but... It doesn't crash so much and with loads of track it stacks on one screen. Wicked!! Lets have some of that!!

I love the fact that if you have no problems with Sonar 8 or 8.0.1 and your a cheerleader.

NO The simple fact is that statistically most issues on this thread have an equal in fact higher change of being related to soundcard, hardware or configuration issues, yet Sonar is always held to blame.

Those of us who don't have issues are posting to balance this view and to hopefully make people engage the logic that hey if its working for them, maybe I should go and re-check my Soundcard, hardware and configuration, ie go through the correct problem solving steps.

Our posts are not cheerleading or fanboyism they are a valid sanity check, both for those with the issues and those reading this thread who have not upgraded and will not be getting a balanced view otherwize.

I won't say Sonar 8 is perfect, but a disappointment? Nope.

It kinda slays me that for the last two years we've been seeing people around these parts say "I really just want the bakers to concentrate on improving the audio engine at the expense of all the bells and whistles." And when they do just that everyone jumps on them for not improving the bells and whistles.

But, actually, there are some great bells and whistles. I think Beatscape is awesome, and the transient shaper, while I haven't used it practically, saves me from having to shell out for a 3rd party TS, which was on my list. While I don't usually care for the sound libraries Cake usually includes, I have to say the beatscape library is really stellar, and the additions to Dimension Pro library are a great bonus.

I was experiencing the drop-out issue - though .01 seems to have cured that for me - but I am beyond tickled at the improvements to audio engine. My projects are loading faster, and have much more CPU headroom. How can I complain about that? I have every confidence that Cake will get the other little bits cleaned up and under control.

Well, I skipped to the last page of this thread, and I don't want to add fuel to the fire if it's troll-baiting... BUT....

I'm a little on the fence about this version. I don't mind the lack of mega-new features. The plugs they included seem fine for now. But for me the biggest thing was the improvements to the audio engine.

So far, they're a mixed bag. Sure, the engine seems more agile and more stable MOST of the time. But I've gotten cold crashes, and hangs. And I've only been using v8 on small projects and only for about a week. The update seems to have fixed a few things but now I get oddities (stuck Record enable buttons for one). These weren't problems before and I feel partially negate the audio engine improvements, which land be back at square one with the version.

So, I'm back to "meh" for v8 so far. Maybe this'll change as i wrap my head around Beatscape, the transient tool, and some other under-the-hood things. But really what would make me jump up and down like a freak would've been v2 of ACT and Audiosnap, and a whole host of workflow improvements. Like, REAL workflow improvements.

I just started mixing a record this week, we'll see how the .01 update holds up.

I don't understand where all of this is coming from. The Sonar 8 release has FAR MORE features and enhancements than the version 7 release! Just look at the comparisons. Not to mention the inclusion of Dimension Pro which alone was more than the cost of the upgrade. A TruePianos LE and guitar rig LE (which isn't exactly the best guitar plug, I know). 3 new cake plugins, not including beatscape.

Is it that the UI wasn't updated? Most applications update the colors in the UI and fool people into thinking it is a new release and everything under the hood is different.

I am not disappointed at all with S8.

Well, the complaints that have been building have been: too many plugins, not enough core improvements, and a cumulative lack of "wow" regarding the core.

Now, there's always gonna be haters, no way around that. But reading the forum and also attending a user group meeting there IS a consistent growing minority who are concerned v8 is a little glitchy and underwhelming. I'm not part of that group myself, as I said I'm on the fence, but it IS true that there is a growing minority in that camp. Whether this dissipates with another update or not is what I'm waiting for.

Yeah. Seems it should have been a point release. I actually welcome the fixes to the audio engine. The bugs, however aren't cool. That is one thing that Digidesign does right (and it's an annoyance). They don't rush anything to market. They are much more focused on reliability.  We'll have to see what the future brings. I heard some rumors of some changes going on at Cakewalk.

As a user of both Reaper and Sonar AND an obscure program that does all my MIDI editing, I have to say I was slightly underwhelmed by 8 as well.
For the first time since I became a Sonar owner (3PE) I only went to the studio edition and then mostly for the free upgrade to the next paid version, which turned out to be 8.5.

I evaluated what was included in PE that I would be missing out on & decided it wasnt worth the extra £££ TO ME.

That said, I was more than slightly disappointed in the lack of real improvement in the audio engine and the problems I encountered in 64 bit, regardless of whose "fault" they were.

Cake are not alone in their ineptitude as regards 64 bit version of theor products, but that doesn`t make mne feel any better about it.
And I have to say Reaper generally does 64 bit better at present.

Essentially, the one thing almost all software developers seem to have a problem grasping is that just having a product that works properly would be a huge step forward for the average user.
There are innumerable irritating bugs in Sonar that have been around for a long time and appear to be no closer to being solved.

I'm going to stick with what works for me, I don't get every upgrade because it's there. I have no problem with Sonar 6 PE, actually I like 4 better, but  I use 6 because of the feel. I tried Sonar 7 (hated it)-so i figure, if it ain't broke, spend that money on some other gear.
