I'm still using Sonar 5, so can't try these themes out. However, I plan to upgrade to Sonar 7 and will want to try out some themes at that point.

What would be awesome is to have a Top 10 (or Top 5 or Top 3) list of color themes, so that there are fewer to have to try out. Do you know of any such lists? Would a poll on here help develop such a list?

Quick Question - What is the option in the color scheme that changes the VU meter - in the CONSOLE view...the one option I've found so far is for the track view - from the drab light blue to the green I see several styles using?? I can't find that one to save my life...

In Sonar 7 got to Options > Colors> Color Category select (Console View) look for VU Lo Level and VU Hi Level, you can also change the color of the tick marks by selecting VU Tick Marks.

WTF - I have Sonar 6 and that's where I've been changing it but it only changes on the TRACK view for me NOT the CONSOLE view. I want the default light blue channel meter lights to go green on the CONSOLE view.

I wish that they's have different mixer views! I love the one in Sonar 5, but hate the one in Sonar 6... I just want my mixer to look like a mixer sometimes...

You cant change the color of the meters if they are segmented! I'd love to have my green segmented meters back, oh well...............

Yep, millzy is correct... segmented meters can't be changed yet. If you make them non-segmented, you can adjust them all you like.

Sorry - how would one make them non-segmented and what would be the up/downside of doing so?

In your meter options, you can select segmented or non-segmeted.

Segmented meters are less CPU intesive, so things run more smoothly. This is because by segmenting them, they have a lower "resolution" and hence a lighter load on your CPU.

Also, some people like the way they look, and others are more familiar because they resemble a hardware console.

All in all, if your CPU is not being over-taxed, it's just a matter of preference. I find the non-segmented meters to be easier while mixing because of the better resolution, and I like the way I can change the color.

RE: SONAR Color Schemes 2007/10/02 22:06:22 (permalink)
Anyone care to recommend a color theme to me? I skipped Sonar 6 (jumping from 5 to 7) so feel out of the loop in terms of which color themes are "hot", "must-have", "proven", etc.

I typically use 16 tracks of MIDI and occasionally a few tracks of audio. I have track view on one monitor and piano roll in the other (with controllers in the lower pane). I never use the console view. I use volume automation all the time and pan every once in a while. My monitors are both 19" CRTs. The room tends to be dark, and I'm the only one in here.

Given my setup and habits, what schemes would you recommend I try?

Is there a list somewhere of most popular (or most recommended) color schemes?

Thanks a ton!

It just comes down to whatever one floats your boat. I tend to go for the darker ones, I find it easer on the eyes.
I like MQ's scheme, DomM's Dark Side, Saaricom's scheme, Keni's DSR Dark Console, Phazel's Nice Stock and Jeremys Shades of Gray.

Can someone tell me how to add these color schemes to my presets? I think we used to be able to do that in Sonar 6 by double clicking on a .reg version of the file, but now that they are .clr files, it seems you can load them and change your current colors but it remains under the name of the previous scheme.

I'm hoping I don't have to load and save each one...

Thx.

You have to load and save each one. Sorry.

There's been a feature request entered against this. The idea would be to just import the .clr and save it under the .clr file's basename as one action (if the color scheme name doesn't already exist). If it turns out you don't like that color scheme, it would be easy enough to just delete it.

Boy, I have to agree, being able to use different color strips for different tracks could be good...but I would prefer I be able to individually toggle this for a track in a project, rather than just rotating through colors via the color scheme. Perhaps both things can be done? I would probably usually have all my track strips be the same color but then I might choose to select a particular strip, right click, choose an alternate color for it, etc.. that would be very handy to say the least.

How about a feature called "Color Groups" where a group could be created with a manually assigned color and tracks could be added at will to said group. When added their track would become the color of the group. This would be a handy way to color all drum tracks, vocal tracks, etc. in a quick and dynamic fashion. And it would be cool if the console could optionally follow the groups.

You know people 'round here have all kinds of FR. Half of 'em are "Wha?" and the other half are "Sure, why not?" (Most of my FR are one or the other.) And a very few are, "You know, that's a really smart idea."

This, my friends, is one of those rare ideas.

There's all kinds of ways to implement it. Tracks in folders get custom colors. But, yes, this does seem most desirable.

Have to agree. This is indeed one of those ideas that is soooo obvious that it just has to be on the next (sub)release of Sonar. It will certainly steal a number of serious users from the competition.

Damn, the simplicity of genius. Hats off to you mr. Silence Dogood
