SONAR: Glad I Finally Updated to Windows 10

This is probably old news to most of you, but I finally updated to Windows 10 despite FOCUS (Fear of Catastrophe from Updating Systems). I have to say it was the most painless OS update ever, Windows or Mac, with tangible speed increases for SONAR (although maybe it's just that Windows in general is faster, I don't know) and cooler features. YMMV but at least for me, it's been effing great and given that you can roll it back, I'd recommend it if you haven't updated already.

That is all...

Well, I did! I just think that after all those years of wiping hard drives, losing a couple days re-installing and re-authorizing everything, swearing, and prayer, people find it hard to believe that Microsoft got it really right this time. It all seems too good to be true. I was skeptical that the mobile team could pull of what was needed for a desktop system, but they clearly had a better handle on integrating the two than the desktop team that did [shudder] Windows 8.

Compare Windows 10 upgrade experiences to El Capitan, which many people are still urging me to avoid for my PowerBook...although others say it's pretty much okay now. I think I'll wait another month

Really glad to hear this, Craig. Have waited, and even buried that KB constantly pushing Windows 10 in my direction.

My system is a general use PC, and when I read things like, today, how the latest update caused so many issues with a wide variety of users, I keep reverting to being shy about the transition. It's been so nice that Platinum works so well on my Win7 system.

I'll look forward to continuing reports, also from those with general use computers re: their experiences as well.

Re: SONAR: Glad I Finally Updated to Windows 10 2015/12/24 20:29:21 (permalink)
To me it was very easy except it wiped my Win 8.1 install. Keep in mind I was doing a "clean" install. Because my system drives are removable I put the Win 8.1 drive in a different bay and began installing Win 10 on a new HD. Before I could stop it it screwed up the Win 8.1 drive so bad I have to reformat it. Meaning I lost everything on it.

I have been rebuilding my lost licenses ever since. Some are just gone. Most were retrievable from the developers. Now am I upset? No I'm not. Why because life is way too short. None of my data was harmed. Just all the emails and documents on my 8.1 documents folder. With 8 and 8.1 I had decided to let Win put things where it wanted. Normally I put things on other HDs. So it wasn't MS's fault but my own. Also I'm not sure why I put my 8.1 system disk in the drive anyway. Except with it not there 10 would not install.

Now did that have any impact on my view of Windows 10. No. I saw it as a big step forward. Where apps and programs run side by side without strange protocols interfering.

Plus I got a tablet shortly after adopting Win 10 on the desktop. It came with 8.1 I updated to 10 and it was the best update experience I ever had. There are a ton of touch shortcuts plus you may find as I have a mouse is better supported too. Windows 10 is a winner and I will strongly recommend it whenever asked.

I know you will find it to be a solid OS with all the years of experience MS has stowed away over the years incorporated within it. If you have any questions about it I may have the answers or I may know where to get the answers.

Good to know guys.  I'm tempted, but I would end up with a "Home" version if I go with the freebie and I insist on control over updates and other aspects of my machine.  I think I'll continue to let the smoke clear for a while longer.  Positive stories like yours help ease the concerns.

If I was hurting for performance benefits, I might go ahead, but Noel & Co have Sonar screamin' along on my 8.1 i5 system.  And THAT is great!

I hope you did the custom install...or I'm going to network your PC to mine and get all those projects for free, you're working on!!  Seriously...all I want to know is what's in your refrigerator.  Microsoft should already know by now, now that you're on 10. :-D

I updated my laptop a couple of months ago and immediately rolled back - the spiky text fonts were awful (big kerfufffle on the internet about this) and it also refused adamantly to see my printers.

I updated again a week ago after I'd seen on a forum that MSoft had relented and fixed the fonts debacle. (Although Edge still has traces of this so I use Chrome which is absolutely fine). This time the update also found my printers. With renewed confidence I then updated my desktop DAW PC and all went well, although I had to update my REM AIO soundcard drivers and firmware first.

I don't use any of the new toys in W10, I just updated because I knew that one day I'd have to anyway...

True. Thats because I have been using an OS since PC DOS 1. In my case I have had very good experiences with most all of them. I did use Windows ME and liked it very much. I also used Windows CE. I have also used and liked OS 2.

I'm in the "insider program" and have been using Win 10 for over a year.  No problems except for Roland dragging their feet with device drivers.  When I upgraded my Win 8.1 Pro system to Win 10 Pro, it was an upgrade and no real problems.  I had to reauthorize AD2 (and wait for Roland) but that was all.  All my Internet Explorer 11 bookmarks and passwords were carried forward to Edge.

For those with older hardware, I would be cautious and really do your "homework" before upgrading.  Some old hardware is not really compatible.  The Microsoft "minimum system requirements" are not really real world and although it meets the minimum it may not work well/properly.

For the most part it has been a continuous improvement. I may be one of the few to say it but Vista was a big step forward from XP. Went from 32 bit XP to 64 bit Vista and it was a significant step forward.

Win 8 took a bit of getting use to (I skipped 7) but with Classic shell I was very good.

Win 10 has certainly been the easiest update. A couple of issues with software authorisation, Independence Pro is still not sorted, but that is not Microsoft's fault.

If we didn't have to have auto updates on, I'd use it but.

I will not tolerate:

1. Not getting to use my PC immediately. (Please wait,, getting windows ready....) - it was ready yesterday.
2. Not having it shutdown immediately. ( Installing Update 1 of 20, don't turn off the PC).  >:(

My computer is on a hard switch with the reast of the studio by design.

I have to have my DAW like a car or a toaster. On demand and right now.

Craig,
Was your update a clean install or did you update over your older operating system? I don't want to do a clean install if I can avoid it. I also suffer from FOCUS. Right now with Windows 7 my system is quite stable and problem free.

That's the beauty of the update, I did not need to do a clean install. So far everything has worked except for the V-Studio. There's a hack for it that works with Windows 10, and according to posts in the hardware forum Roland has an "unofficial" driver if you contact them, but I'm converting to touch anyway (one of the reasons I updated to 10) so it doesn't affect me. The only other hiccup, if you can all it that, was that a dialog box came up asking me if I wanted Windows to install the drivers for the TASCAM US-4x4. Clicked yes, and that was covered.

In the immortal words of Herman Cain, "I don't have facts to back this up" but I suspect those background updates happening to Windows 7 or 8 are essentially turning it into Windows 10. Vista was like this - but the time you did the last Vista update, you were essentially running Windows 7.

Hi. I did an upgrade on my laptop the day it became available. I have had no issues at all. So I decided to do a clean install on my Studio pc. All I can say is that I concur with this being the best OS MS has delivered so far. I have my laptop set to auto update, and my Studio pc set to manual (I do not remember how I got manual updates on my Studio pc, but it was during install). Everything is very stable (besides a few user errors)
All the best.

I'm finding this to be a very encouraging thread . After trying out Windows 10 on a laptop that came with it installed as the OS , my feeling is this may be the best Windows OS I've ever used .The one or two little bumps in the road with getting Win 10 to accept  my 2i4 as the primary sound card I've experienced seem to be working themselves out ...
May I ask what which Windows OS you had on your computer before you did your in place upgrade to Win 10 ?
The only reason for that question is my Humble main Win computer came with Win 8 64 and I have kept it there at 8.
I would find it helpful to find out if I can just bypass 8 .1 and go from 8 to 10 ..VIA an install over my current OS ..

thanks ,

^^ I had Win 2000 X86 (obviously) XP X86, then Vista X86 (M-Audio Delta 1010lt), Win7, X64 (Lexicon IO42, Echo Audiofire 8), (laptop came with Win8.1 X64) and finally updated / upgraded to Win10 X64 (RME Ucx). All good on my end

May I ask what which Windows OS you had on your computer before you did your in place upgrade to Win 10?

Windows 7 Professional. I really disliked 8 and didn't put it on any of my Windows computers. My reaction to 10 is the polar opposite. And as I mentioned before, I suspect quite a bit of the code you have is Windows 10-primed if you've been doing your regular Microsoft updates.

I also like that some things have been added in the background. For example when W10 first came out you couldn't play DVDs on it, then one day a DVD player appeared.

I suspect that Microsoft will accomplish their goal of separating me from some disposable income in the future when they offer something almost cool for free, but which you can upgrade for a nominal fee. Meanwhile I've also upgraded to a 27" multitouch monitor and TASCAM's USB 3.0 US-20x20 interface, so I'm feeling very 21st century right now.

Tip; Some of you may know this. Windows 10 has the ability to have multiple desktops. If you click on the task view icon on the task bar you can create and access more desktops. Each one is independent of the others. You can also access them by swiping from the far left on a touch screen.

Windows key + tab will show all open windows. This is very useful for finding hidden windows or for changing tasks.

Windows 10 is ok for recording music, but I really wish that the presentation mode available on laptops using Windows button+x would be available on desktops and prevent indexing, defragging, patching or other daw unfriendly activities. Without this, Windows remains the biggest risk to me making successful recordings.

These days I'm half and half Windows and Linux for live recording.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Can you write more about what 10 is doing with indexing, defragging and other DAW unfriendly activities? When is it doing those things and how is it affecting Sonar?
