SONAR X1 Helper Release Candidate 1 Released (6th February 2011)

This thread is now obsolete. For the latest information about SONAR Plus (formerly SONAR X1 Helper), please visit www.sonarplus.co.uk.

I've just released the latest version of SONAR X1 Helper, which I've called 'Release Candidate 1'. This basically means it's stable and has been tested by lots of people on lots of different platforms, but it probably needs one final round of testing, just in case, before it can truly be called 'Version 1'.

For more information, please visit:

http://www.sonarhelper.com/

A list of what's new can be found on the download page.

I'm afraid information is a bit sparse at the moment, but I'll be adding quite a bit to it over the next few days.

The headline changes are:

1. Separate snap to grid setting for PRV.
2. Lots and lots of bug fixes and general stability improvements.
3. SONAR X1 Helper can now start SONAR for you. This basically means that you can run SONAR and have Helper appear straight away without having to run it manually.
4. Full Screen Mode improvements.
5. Hide MultiDock improvements (including if you open a new project, the MultiDock can be hidden automatically).
6. BitBridge improvements (all BitBridge windows will be automatically 'fixed' as soon as they are openend now, assuming you enable the option of course).

If you decide to download it, don't be afraid to play around with the options in the Preferences window, which can be accessed by clicking the  button in the Helper toolbar.

If you have any problems with it, then please feel free to comment here or email me at feedback@sonarhelper.com and I'll respond ASAP.

Thanks,
Ben

    Hey Ben,

Fantastic Job on the latest version of X1Helper!  I started SonarX1a 64bit and then started Helper 64bit, and it immediately found the older version, unloaded it, and loaded the new Helper ....all went smooth as silk!  One small thing was that new version didn't carry over the preferences that were set in the previous version it removed, but for a working utility such as this ....going through and re-setting my preferences is a small price to pay.  This  thing is turly incredible.

Thanks again so much Ben ....get some sleep, you deserve it!

I'm going back to making music! :)

Can't seem to change it to X1, with Open With....

    SonarPDR.exe  8.5 not SonarPDR.exe X1

    Hi GT...

Yes, these things are working fine now...

First open X1, then open X1 Helper...

Open Helper's Preferences (2nd button from right end)... On the first tab (Startup) Click on the Browse button and navigate to X1's sonarpdr.exe file and select it... then click the "Run SONAR on startup" button...

Position and customize the buttons to your liking...

    Close Sonar...

Now here's the 'catch' instead of launching Sonar, now (first and only) launch X1 Helper. It will open Sonar, then open itself and postion itself where you left it... If you have any other options for auto startup (such as the wonderful Hide Miltidock on startup, they too will begin working...

    For the snap settings...

    Open Helper's settings again...

    Goto the General tab...

Click the box to "Enable separate Paino Roll View snap to grid setting"

Set the default to your preference for TV
Set the "default Piano Roll View Setting" to your preference there...

    Click ok!

    You're rockin'!

And all this is done from someone's home in the UK? Are you kidding me? Freaking brilliant!

Amazing that someone can set up the TV and PRV snap features to be separate - from their home in the UK. I noticed though that once you set the default it seems as though you can't use any other snap settings as it always reverts to the default. Is that the only way this will work? Seems like that makes sense and I'm willing to try it out to see if I come up against any limitations. Any other thoughts?

Not a fan of the little icons and am not sure I'll use them but am a HUGE fan of the effort and contribution this little program has made. Thanks Benstat.

I'm not a great mouse user so probably won't make much use of all your hard work, BUT... it's fantastic that you've done this and just goes to show what a great community this can be - because of people like you benstat. Sincerely - thank you.

On a slightly lighter more humourous note - HumbleNoise you're probably better off not pointing out that it was progammed in the UK, some users won't approve.......

Small niggle. Browser colors don't change here. And can't 'pin' Sonar Helper to the Task Bar. Still brilliant with the snap settings.

    System below.

Yet again you blow me away.  You have made X1 so much more functional.  Over a period of several hours, it saves minutes from the time I spend recording and mixing.  Although I use key bindings as well, I've had physical problems with my left arm (rotator cuff) that makes it difficult to use key bindings, and having the ability to use my mouse saves time and wear and tear on the arm.  You deserve free upgrades for life in my opinion.  Thank you.

This is only for X1... why would you need it in earlier releases? It's essentially a revival of the many buttons we had in previous releases.

The Browser functions can only work in X1 as the Browser is a new addition to Sonar... Replacing a few other windows now rolled into one...

One small thing was that new version didn't carry over the preferences that were set in the previous version...
This is a known issue, but it only affects this version. Future versions will bring forward the preferences you choose. If you customize the toolbar in this version, for example, when you install the next version your toolbar customizations will be kept. I changed something for this release that prevents Helper from bringing in settings from older versions, but it will be fine from now on.

Were your questions answered by Keni's post (#10, thanks a lot Keni!)? If not, take a look at the FAQ page (currently called 'Support' but I'm going to rename it later today) at www.sonarhelper.com. It may not contain the info you need right now, but I intend to add some relevant info later on today. If you're in a hurry, send an email to feedback@sonarhelper.com and I'll try and help out a bit sooner.

I'm afraid so, though I think it isn't really much of an inconvenience. Because Helper is trying to work with SONAR 'from the outside', there is no way for Helper to know the current snap setting. The only way Helper can be sure what the current snap setting is, is to set it itself. Hence the default settings (one for PRV, and one for everything else). As soon as you enable the separate snap settings, Helper sets the current snap setting to the default value that you set up in Preferences. That way, it knows exactly what the current snap value is.

Of course, after that you can do what you like with the snap settings!
Not a fan of the little icons and am not sure I'll use them...

I definately encourage you to hide all the buttons you don't need, even if it means you're only left with one (you have to have at least one)!!. I personally only use about 8 or so Helper buttons, so I hide all the rest and have a much smaller toolbar, and much less on-screen clutter!

Hey benstat, again an awesome job on the helper!! I have been having no problems with the default snap settings they are working perfectly. I'll tidy up the buttons as you suggest.

Still not seeing any color change in the browser and can't pin the helper to the task bar - any advice?

Only the plugin instruments and effects colours are changed in the Browser at the moment. Does that explain why you're not seeing the colour change?
I definately want to pin Helper to the taskbar myself, so I'll look into it...

What Keni said in post #18 (thanks again Keni). Most of the stuff in Helper isn't relevant to older versions.

Thanks again for all your positive comments and kind words! Keep an eye on www.sonarhelper.com over the coming week or so. The first version will be released soon, and I'll be adding lots of hints, tips and instructions too.

Edit: HumbleNoise - Helper doesn't appear in the taskbar when it runs, so you can't pin it to the taskbar of course! I'll see what I can do about it...

Thank you Ben for all of your hard work.  I really appreciate what you can do with your app.   I am using it am smiling.

Just wanted you to know that I have set in your preferences to only show the first three icons until I move my mouse over them to show the rest of the icons.

Sometimes I can move my mouse over the rest of the icons and I select certain icons and sometimes the icon bar dissapears before I can select an icon.  It is only a hit and miss situation here.

Pin the shortcut to the taskbar would be a welcome relief if you can find a way to do so.

Thank you again for all of you hard work.

Thanks again Ben!  It's unbelievable you've found a way to make separate  TV and PRV snap settings from outside X1.

Small niggle. Browser colors don't change here. And can't 'pin' Sonar Helper to the Task Bar.
Only the plugin instruments and effects colours are changed in the Browser at the moment. Does that explain why you're not seeing the colour change?
I definately want to pin Helper to the taskbar myself, so I'll look into it...

Is there anything similar to this for older versions of Sonar?
What Keni said in post #18 (thanks again Keni). Most of the stuff in Helper isn't relevant to older versions.

Thanks again for all your positive comments and kind words! Keep an eye on www.sonarhelper.com over the coming week or so. The first version will be released soon, and I'll be adding lots of hints, tips and instructions too.

Edit: HumbleNoise - Helper doesn't appear in the taskbar when it runs, so you can't pin it to the taskbar of course! I'll see what I can do about it...

Ben, remember the issue I told you about with the colors not keeping the colors you select regardless of whether or not you take the check out of the box that says "restore upon exit" or whatever? It's still the same as the last version for me. I have to literally open Helper prefs, click on the tab for colors and press "ok" for my plugin text to change to the colors. It IS saving my color choices in Helper, but it is not auto-applying them unless I make it apply them.

Other than that, this version is killer and I love it! The pin to task bar thing doesn't really bother me because I just created a shortcut on my desktop for it, but for those that like a cleaner desktop without icons all over, the pin-to would be a nice addition. Thank you so much again for your hard work on this. I wish you had one of these for Sonar 8.5! hahaha!

    Hi Danny,
No, I haven't forgotten and hope to have a fix soon.
    Thanks,

How to pin SONAR X1 Helper to your Windows taskbar (Vista/7):

    1. In Windows Explorer, go to the folder where SONAR X1 Helper is installed.
    2. Right click 'SonarX1Helper.exe' and choose 'Create shortcut' from the popup menu.
    3. A new shortcut to Helper will be created in the same folder.
    4. Rename the shortcut to 'SonarX1Hlper' (note the missing 'e' in 'Helper').
    5. Right click the shortcut and choose 'Pin to Taskbar'.

Why does it have to be done this way? I've just learned that Microsoft, in their wisdom, made the ridiculous design decision to prevent any program with the word 'help' in its title, from being pinned  to the taskbar!!!

Because of this, I may have to change the name of Helper to something else! What a PITA. Anyway, this workaround will do for now.

Edit: On second thought's I'm not going to change the name of Helper just for this. Too many things need changing, not to mention the fact I just bought the sonarhelper.com domain! I'll just put these intructions onto the website instead.

That worked great Ben. Thanks. And colors do seem to work in FX and Synth rack.
