Well that's pretty cool. At least there's a possible workaround. Thanks.

I have the same problem. In the heat of a session doing multiple takes it can be very frustrating- as Sonar crashes pretty consistently under these circumstances. Many times I have to reboot. (I'm using the V-700). So it's save after every take- which should be normal- but with all the other stuff going on one can forget. I seemed to experience this more after the X1D patch.

What sort of crash are you talking about? Whatever the type, you should NOT be crashing regularly with your system.

"What sort of crash are you talking about? Whatever the type, you should NOT be crashing regularly with your system." Well Amen that it SHOULDN'T be crashing a lot but it IS. Pretty much just as the OP describes. Sometimes Sonarpdr.exe stays open in the background and the only thing I can do is reboot. Sometimes closing the VS700 does the gig but lots of times it's reboot. It happened this morning in a session with two clients here! It's not the end of the world for me as I'm aware that I HAVE to save after every take. It's just a bit frustrating. 8.5.3 seemed to be pretty stable compared to this. Again, I aint exactly ****ing but...

I have the same problem, especially when I use v-vocal. Like you, I can not shut down the process. Things seem to go to pot if there is a crash when I have a midi keyboard connected. My "fix" is loging off of windows (not shutting down, just a quick logoff/login. When I do that, the process is gone and sonar can be started and run normally. By the way, since I gave up on v-vocal because of instabilities (in Sonar x1 64 bit only, not 32), and went to Melodyne (which is GREAT, 10 times better than v-vocal), ALL that instability is gone because I no longer use V-vocal. But the log off/logon trick is what I did before that and saved a lot of time over rebooting.

My X1 crashes when trying to use Rapture, and I have documented that in some depth elsewhere. When X1 crashes, I too need to re-boot, before I can start X1 again, and the .exe program is still running, and visible in the processes tab of task manager. The only device connected to my workstation when this happens is my Roland QUAD-CAPTURE. I have raised a support ticket and I am still awaiting a response.

@synkrotron... I know it's long distance for you but if it's causing a serious disruption in your work it's easier to get a response from Cake support over the phone. Both times I've called I was only on hold for a few minutes and it was well worth the wait and few bucks of LD charges. Extremely helpful folk. Cheers.

Long distance "over the pond call" lol. But you're probably right, but I'm going to give it another week or so, simply because I've got that much to learn about other stuff that it's taking the pressure off Rapture for the moment. And I hate to say this, but up to now, I am still preferring my old Absynth over Rapture and even Z3ta, for now at least, but that's probably because I am not spending enough time with my new toys ;^) And yeah, I probably need to bookmark the Roland QC driver page and check in there at least once a week. All in all, though, it's been a pile of fun getting back into cake, with the ProChannel stuff, Multidoc windows, BFD Eco etc etc, and also being able to help at least two peeps here this last week or so... loving it... just need to make some moosik

in the last few days under heavy usage (2 remixes) X1 has been crashing on simple drag/drop of midi clips here or there. i got it to be almost repeatable. 14 times it crashed this way. just wanted to report. also as a sidenote, after one crash i let it alone for about 30 minutes and it came back without reboot, although the midi indicator never went away. this is the first time its done that. who knows, maybe windows drops the drivers after a timeout period?

I too have had this happen when editing sounds in various soft synths such as Rapture. As far as this being a possible driver problem, I had this crash while using a delta 44 and my current Quad Capture, so Im not convinced its that. The screen turns a faded white...then I close Sonar and cannot open sonar again without rebooting the computer. This has probably happened a ten times in the last two two years.

@Randy... I hate to think this way but if people are having an issue with this on devices other than M-Audio, in my mind, I can only assume it's Sonar having trouble with certain hardware drivers. Maybe we should all yell at the device manufacturers to make sure their stuff works with Cake software. I know Cake isn't the be all and end all of DAWs but I think it has enough of a share of the market to at least be considered when testing new drivers. I may have this issue muddled in my head but although I think Cake should do their best to stay on top of this kind of stuff I could see it being next to impossible if the hardware kids are not playing nice. Make sense at all? Maybe others have more insight on this topic and can share.

interesting data: -just crashed again (launching Maschine) and i waited for 5 minutes, nothing happened. -hit ctrl-alt-del and checked the .exe was running. it was (540mb). right clicked on it and "create crash dump log" -waited 4 minutes. still running. -unplugged midiman 8x8 and plugged back in. waited 4 minutes. nothing. -waited 5 minutes. sonar finally shut down.

Interesting topic. I've noticed this problem for years but have gotten used to it. It certainly happens on Sonar 8.5 but I believe earlier versions as well. Yes, I have an M-Audio keyboard and its interesting to know that it might be the culprit. Sonar doesn't crash that much on my system, but when it does SONARPDR.exe is almost always running in the background and the MIDI indicator remains visible. I almost never reboot. I just open task manager and click "end process" a few times. After a while, SONARPDR.exe goes away. I don't think it would take less time if I waited for a reboot. Although I use X1D, version 8.53 is still hanging around on my system, as it takes me a very long time to delete a previous Sonar after installing a new one. Force of habit. Anyway, I discovered that if the Midi indicator remains after an X1 crash, I can make it go away by firing up and closing 8.53.

I have had this problem in the past with my yamaha keyboard connecting via USB, but my current set up, I run the MIDI I/O thru either my MOTU MIDI Express or my MOTU ultralite. the MIDI express uses USB for I/O and the Ultralite I am using firewire for I/O. I've not had this problem since using this setup.

hesitant to buy M-Audio stuff Just to let you know, I use a Delta66 (hardly state of the art) with 64 bit drivers in Win 7 x64 and I've never had a problem. Maybe it's more related to USB drivers? And maybe the motherboard type has something to do with it? I'm just saying this as you seem to have your heart set on the Axiom

benjaminfrog So, periodically, Sonar stops responding (usually as the result of a plugin not playing well with others) and I have to exit and relaunch the program. Usually, this does the trick and I'm up and running again in less than a minute. However, occasionally, SONARPDR.exe continues running in the background and, unless I reboot, I can't reopen Sonar for 5 to 10 minutes; i.e., until the executable stops. Anyone know how to force the shutdown of the .exe? I've tried the following command line from the install directory (which has worked on other .exes), but to no avail: taskkill /f /im "sonarpdr.exe" Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. What version of X1 are you running? Install the latest update (X1d) as I believe this is a known bug with the earlier versions. I recently got X1 for my new system and had the same issue you had, but it went away as soon as I updated to the X1c and X1d patches.

This happens to me occasionally - and I USED to have to Reboot. But someone on this forum told me to Kill the Process in task manager (not the application because the application isn't there). After I kill the Process I can re-start with no issues. No Re-boot. This has worked like a charm over the last couple years since I learned this tip. Have you tried that?
