I waited and got X1 after the "b" update. It has ran very well for me. At this point I have nothing to really complain about. Through all the updates and about a years worth of use I have had 2-3 crashes.

Beagle come on guys - arguing over whether X1 initial release was "the best release ever" or not is actually a little pathetic. John thinks it was. OK - that's his opinion and he's entitled to his opinion. but bottom line he only speaks for himself, not for anyone else. that's one thing that really is frustrating about these forums. some people assume they speak for others when they say things like that, or things like "the user base is upset because X1 is broken." same thing. John can say it was his best release ever. he's entitled and has the right to that opinion. he cannot say that for anyone else, tho. Bub can say it's the worst ever. same deal. I don't disbelieve his experience at all. I just didn't have the same experience and I contend he only speaks for his experience, not anyone elses. I speak for myself and say it was somewhere in between those two., leaning toward the "not so much" end because I had major crash issues when X1 first came out. sonar would simply go away. no warning, no dump, no pop ups, no errors. just gone in the middle of recording projects. NP, I'll just say Ja.

So, instead of (rather ironically) criticising someone else for passing on " complete misinformation", he should have clearly stated that: " Actually - in my opinion - X1 as a first release was far and away the best first release CW ever put out". Mind you, John now has so little credibility - in my opinion - when it comes to objectively discussing Cakewalk products, that I wasn't in the least bit surprised when he said what he said.

I may be the most outspoken on X1 but I am not alone in my views on it. You say that my credibility is suspect which is another attempt to call me a lair. Don't take my word on it read the reviews from reviewers. People that have a reputation to worry about. Though you are trying to destroy mine. Really what are you taking me to task for? Standing up for a program that some few have trashed on this forum? Again you and a few others seem bent on undermining anyone that has had a good to great time with X1. I wonder why? It is not my credibility that is in question but yours. This thread title should be cause to understand that you and your friends have done your best to defame X1 and this thread is the result. Just look at the title. Also why are you and your CH friends here? Did someone raise the alarm that people are speaking kindly about X1?

John, for starters, I love X1 (and I already said so in this thread). I'd recommend it to anyone who asked my opinion. But, as I said to you before your last disappearance, I am also a realist. You have no right to tell a potential customer that "Actually X1 as a first release was far and away the best first release CW ever put out" without at least adding the caveat "in my opinion". And nobody is calling you a liar - certainly not me (you see, I don't purport to speak for anyone else but myself). But you stated something that is patently not a 100% fact (which, incidentally, would appear to be the standard you expect in others). At best it's subjective, and even then, bearing in mind the upheaval that took place in here soon after its "first release", I still argue that the statement is false. Seriously, if two or three people that I genuinely respect join in this thread and agree (again, albeit subjectively) with your statement that: "Actually X1 as a first release was far and away the best first release CW ever put out" I'll be amazed.

I'm sorry the truth hurts John, but X1 is not this incredible end all be all recording solution you make it out to be, and Cakewalk is not the only good recording software developer. Your self imposed mission to go on a public forum, discredit real world users and their advice that is backed by fact, borders mental illness. Anyone interested in the facts ... just read the forums and Cakewalks own words in their fix lists. I invite you to correct me if I'm wrong because I don't like saying something that isn't accurate. As you can see, it rubs me the wrong way when people do it. As for CH friends, honestly, I feel tolerated, but not 'one of them' so to speak, if that makes you feel any better. Once again, wild speculation based on fantasy has served you wrong. Time to go record, had enough fighting for one day.

And nobody is calling you a liar - certainly not me Than you don't know what the word credibility means. A word you have used more than once in reviewing my posts. There one is to infer from that you have no respect for me. I need corroboration in order to be believable. Again a way of calling me a liar. Yet at the same time you say you like X1. Its really baffling.

With X1D, you'll lose the ability to Fastbounce timecode based plugins such as Melodyne and Antares. Also Audio snap not functioning correctly on bounced tracks especially since the update. Playback not functioning as expected with Online Groove clip, clip follows project-stretch... with tempo changed clicking around timeline produces clipping of up to 99.9 db. Quantize audio didn't work in X1 a or b. worked in C. Can't drag midi effect from bin/clip to another bin/clip without fatal crash. Frozen tracks are possessed now. Inexplicable, random behaviors. With all of 8.5.3s features that I've grown accustomed to using, X1 has been crippling to the work flow. I have to save as 8.5.3 files of everything just to accomplish these task that have been hindered. My advice, hang with your 8.5.3 till things get back to normal. BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID.

I'm the original poster. The 69 responses so far were very helpful and to the point (excluding the occasional obligatory rounds of pissing on each others feet). Bottom line of the feedback was "go ahead", so I did. After installing the "base" X1 upgrade, I ran the app with several of my 8.5 files and found no problems. I then installed the "c" patch, ran and tested the app again, then did the same with the "d" patch. I haven't yet had time to try out all the bells and whistles, but for playback of files with dozens of midi and audio tracks and lots of processing, it works just fine. Being still a bit skittish about leaving 8.5 behind, I did this X1 upgrade on my netbook . . . with a humble Intel Atom 1.66gHz and only 1gb of RAM (!), well below Cakewalk's recommended minimum. But I now feel comfortable about upgrading my "real" PC, too. Thanks again for the comments, guys!

No. Would I love some things to work like they did in long ago releases (Mulit-out MIDI Drums not soloing poperly, true color customization)? Ya. I make music with X1. In my home studio at my own pace, just as I did at the end of version 8 or 7 etc. At some point the product versions do become stable.

Just give the trial a run. One problem however is that the trial is not fully updated/patched (to my knowledge), so it is possible you stumble on some bugs that are not longer present in the latest full (no demo) version. That said - X1 is a different animal than 8.5. You have to invest some time in learning how things work in X1. For me it is a huge improvement (while I liked 8.5, for me the interface was a horrible thing with a lot of tiny icons - I was about to give up on Sonar, but X1 "saved" Sonar for me). Others may disagree with me, but that's a personal choice. I would like to suggest to make a back-up (if possible) of your harddisk containing your old version (especially if you have "mission critical" data on it). While I do not really expect something horrendous will happen when you install X1, there is a saying that goes: "it is better safe than sorry". For me X1 has always been stable (even before any patch/update), but as you can read this is not the case for everyone. I can only say I tried the software on several machines with varying hardware (different sound cards, processors, videocards etc.), and on all those machines X1 was stable. As all major software with a lot of components (plugins etc.) there are bugs. For some these bugs are critical (like some bugs in the notation parts), while others do not use that part of the program and are not bitten by that kind of bugs. While bugs are not nice, it is unrealistic to expect a huge program with a lot of components/modules should be absolutely bug free. It is funny however to see the difference in reactions between forums of different DAW's. When going to the Cubase forum you can read "why does that plugin from "manufacturer" does not work good in Cubase? When does that "manufacturer" does get it's act together and let it work in Cubase", while on the Cakewalk forum you read "why does that plugin from "manufacturer" does not work good in Sonar? When does Cakewalk does get it's act together and let it work in Sonar". Funny really Anyway - If Sonar X1 will work good for you is a question you and you alone can answer. It really depends on what parts you are using the most and how you are using them. For a lot of people (like me) the new "work-flow" and/or interface is a time saver (or just more easy), while others hate it with a passion. It is impossible to predict in what category you will end up. Only trying out will give the answer. I only want to give some advice - take enough time to learn how the "new way of things" works. What looks clumsy at first sight can turn out to be a huge improvement in reality later on.

Can't believe I'm a member of the Elite after ALL these years. When I first began using Cakewalk, the WWW didn't exist! But the all-text internet did, and as I began posting a question on Cakewalk's new Bulletin Board System, my typing was interrupted by a response from some guy named Greg Hendershott, who I later learned was Cakewalk's founder.

Jind relpomiraculous Do not upgrade unless you have an i7 processor and Win 7 on a new computer. You did not tell us what kind of computer you have, which is everything. EVERYTHING! Wow, talk about an overstatement. I have far less than an i7 processor, and while I do indeed have Windows 7, my system runs fine for what I use Sonar for. Why exactly an i7 processor a requirement? Even Cake themselves lists a Core 2 duo on the system requirements page with 2 GB or RAM.

GEEEEEZ! I wish I could get this much attention when I ask questions! I will say, if it hasn't already, if you go X1 32 bit it will run just fine on Windows XP with Core2Duo and 3 GB ram. If you're moving up to X1 64 bit on a 64 bit system then you'll run into issues with 32 bit plugins - some will, some won't. Which means you'll be reconfiguring half you projects with different plugins to make them work. Some laptop sound cards will require special drivers like ASIO4ALL.dll. My new 17" i7 fancy-wancy 64 bit laptop did. It was high-end on most everything but the sound was apparently designed by the Rice Crispy elves - nuthin but snap-crackle-pop! My not-so-fancy 32 bit laptop uses Conexant sound and it works fine for playback. Steve

frankinbahia I'm currently an 8.5 user (and still have my floppy (REALLY floppy) of Cakewalk 1.0.) I've been thinking of moving on to X1 but am put off by the extraordinary list of bug fixes, "enhancements", etc. that accompany each of the three updates released to date . . . they go on for pages! When Microsoft pulls a stunt like that, the world rightly crucifies them for releasing software prematurely, but I've read little such commentary on "X1 and Sons". My question, to users who've been working with "d" for a while, is simply whether or not the software is now stable, i.e., all of its functions work and none of them cause a crash or freeze. Thanks! First, I'm only speaking for myself ... When X1 was released it was like a major disaster to me. I was on XP Pro 32bit, 4G RAM, good system overall but not the latest/greatest. And X1 was a nightmare for me, so I stuck with 8.5.3 at the time and was really angry at CW for the handling of things and ... well, it just was a very weird/bad time. HOWEVER, today I have to say (and have often) X1(D) - and I have expanded with all the ad-ons - is about as stable as anything else on the market. Exceptionally so, actually. It is a pleasure to use (give or take some issues we all seem to agree on, like more and better customization, and some bugs that come with every software package. I've been impressed with the growth of the product and the way CW has kept their commitment to their flagship product and customers. They are on a good track, imho, and show what hard work, skill, and commitment can do. I will also say that X1 is a leap from 8.5.x. IOW, there are lots of goodies that make the task of producing music or editing music much nicer/better/fun. That's my .02 cents for what it's worth.

You can leave 8.5.3 installed on your system alongside X1d, and I do recommend it! I always have at least 1 generation before the current SONAR installed. Lance
frankinbahia I'm the original poster. Thanks again for the comments, guys!

ba_midi First, I'm only speaking for myself ... Damn it. I want to argue with you, but I can't because you said you were speaking for yourself! Damned internet!

X1 ran insanely smooth for me right from the start. Yes there are some bugs that need to be fixed, but it ran awesome in general. It sucks that some people have crazy problems. It is also odd that I do not tend to run across those same problems like ever. Lance
