34 years isn't far off.  I think it became Stumps market (near SDSU) around then.  I knew them from the 60's thru the mid-80's and last talked with them in '92.  I used to play darts out in Poway a lot in the mid-80's.

I remember a time a while back where we asked a lot of hard questions about humor in the Coffee House. There were a number of folks who felt that some of the humor was stupid and they resented seeing it everywhere throughout the CH. Some stated rather plainly that they resented wading through reams of silly, nonsensical posts and they felt that certain individuals were ruining the CH with their inane drivel. Some who enjoyed posting such things felt that they were no longer welcome. For a time, some of us drastically reduced our involvement in the Coffee House in order to comply with the wishes of those who resented our presence.

If my memory is correct, that was one of the reasons Bapu started the FSF. (Correct me if I'm wrong about that.) It was a place where silly nonsense could be posted without criticism. One of the other things that came out of that discussion was the idea that if someone doesn't want any silly posts on a particular thread in the CH, they should say so up front. Otherwise, they should accept the fact that this is an off-topic sub-forum and tolerate some silliness.

This is often a vibrant and friendly community of people with a common interest. I've seen this place rally around someone who was hurting or going through a hard time. I've also seen them celebrate each other's successes and big moments. In general, the Coffee House has a positive, happy vibe where laughter flows freely. For some, it is a refuge from the ridiculously hostile environments in other forums. We have people from all over the world talking, joking, and hanging out with each other. When someone decides that what we have to say is not funny, smart, serious, or profound enough to post here, it comes as a shock.

I understand why Beagle has chosen to remove himself from the Coffee House. I hope that this will not be the ultimate solution for the rest of us. In my opinion, we lose a little of the character of this place each time someone leaves feeling unwanted.

May I suggest that all of those folks who don't want silly posts on their threads state this in their original post? In addition, perhaps some of us who frequently post nonsense can try to respect the wishes of others and try not to derail their threads with buffoonery? I don't know. I don't have a great solution other than asking everyone to have a little respect for each other.

I'll miss Beagle around here.

Well, okay it is March, and I am not driving on the road as much because some people seem to want to go a bit crazy in March. Also Daylight Savings Time begins, so since the weather is modifying, see ya later. I have work to do.
So maybe your friend will be back after a time, perhaps not.
The buffonery takes time to read and some people have decided that sometimes it is taking up too much time.
Okay?
Well, if it is not, then the rest of you can think about it for a month or two.

Re: Seriously, we lost a good friend here in the Coffee House as of today. 2014/03/07 17:08:39 (permalink)

So it's my fault then.

And I'm not quite sure what to say to be honest, but I'll try.

I'm all for a good laugh and a joke, and a bit of light-hearted inanity. Surely everyone here knows that?

And yes, I'd be the first to admit that I've posted drivel in many 'serious' threads - but most often to prick the smugness of some self-righteous prick upstairs.

But for the life of me, I don't understand why idiotic posts and silly pics have any place in a genuine thread like that particular example. Yes, lighten things up for sure, but we were actually trying (albeit fruitlessly, as it proved) to rally up a bit of support for someone who feels he's been a bit hard done by. Anyway, and as per Seth's comments when he locked that thread, I'll say no more about that.

But surely anyone with a bit of common decency could see there was some serious stuff being said in there, and maybe it wasn't the place for puerility?

The way I see it, I've as much right to express my opinion that I don't think it was appropriate as anyone else has to actually post it. Where do you draw the line? I don't know. If I'd had the bad taste to have posted a 'funny' cartoon in the thread when we were raising money for dear Jimmy Gentry, I've absolutely no doubt that Reece and others would have had no compunction in pointing out my error of judgement.

When push comes to shove, I thought that we were all grown up enough to take a bit of genuine criticism. Or if we felt slighted and believed to have been the recipient of unfair criticism, to at least say so and then have a rational discussion about it.

I've got it wrong many, many times in the past. But hopefully, I've always managed to man-up and apologise (in public) if I've overstepped the mark or made a fool of myself.

In this particular case, I'll happily apologise for the way I stated my opinions in that thread - I certainly could have expressed my concerns more tactfully, and in private. But I stand by my honest opinion that irrelevant banality had no place in that thread.

Hi,

I'm thinking of playing out loud the Todd Rundgren song "Sunset Boulevard" from the "Wizard/A True Star" album!

... when the poop hits the fan
gotta get my as$ to sunset boulevard
...

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Interestingly, I thought that without some good natured irreverence that thread would have been completely inappropriate.

But I don't look at it as my job to police others, as I've already got my work cut out for me policing myself.

YMMV

Sorry, I just don't pay that much attention to about anything in this part of the forum anyway. And in the next hour, I liable to forget it anyway.
And that may hold to other parts in this entire forum probably also.

What was this thread about?
Again I missed it, and usually I do, not being here all the time.

And politics and religion is not allowed.
Now, what was going on?

They say that once they've got past the boundaries of the "invisible fence" they can't (or won't) come back in the yard. Of course we could just shut down the power to the fence. Or could we?

I'll speak for myself. Spacey chastised me and another member for having a go at his wording of the title about the onslaught of spam.

I took it like it was intended. He did not like it. He was taking SPAM more seriously than I and that other fellow.

I've nothing against spacey and his opinion. Maybe I'll not make that mistake again and maybe I will. But not out of spite towards Michael or anyone else, that is for sure. At the time I made the OT comment it was apparent that the mods were aware of the problem and were dealing with it. End of (my) story. My only regret was that Michael did noit get the "play on words". Cest le vie.

If my memory is correct, that was one of the reasons Bapu started the FSF.

Oh crap ! Does that mean we're gonna get another one now ??

Nope, I'm afraid it will make your head explode. There is the quaint little Mighty Lee Moon game fred, though.
