Found out a little while ago that Cockos has already inquired about ARA integration. Presonus has a lock on it till January before Melodyne will even discuss it with any other company. Bet the R-word has it before SONAR.

Why does Sonar need ARA? What besides Melodyne can use it? And does the new Melodyne not work in Sonar as a plain VSTi?

relpromiraculous writes (Firefox won't quote!!!): "Melodyne are an essential tool for AUDIO editing!" Sonar is the essential tool. Melodyne is a side program used for turning people who should not be allowed to sing into decent vocalists. I have plugins like this located in their own folders named "Special Ed". This sentiment grossly misses the full power of Melodyne. I have never used it for vocals or even pitch correction (yet, though fixing guitar parts might happen). In Studio One (where the ARA technology is seamlessly implemented) one GREAT feature is pulling MIDI notes out and then using them in a variety of ways. It's fantastic for pulling notes of out, e.g., bass loops when you're not a bass player and then having the ability to move notes around and create new bass grooves, then have the midi trigger a soft synth. Or just move notes around IN Melodyne. Fantastic program. V-Vocal now seems pretty clunky compared to it.

relpomiraculous Why does Sonar need ARA? What besides Melodyne can use it? And does the new Melodyne not work in Sonar as a plain VSTi? As I understand it having breafly look at Melodyne a year ago - Melodyn is kind of poorly implemented as a VST. It tries to work in parallell with audio stream somehow and is not using it as VST normally do. Melodyne first versions were standalones and no VST. Outcome of this is that when Sonar loops, Melodyne has no idea this happend and just continues. So Sonar need to be stopped/restarted manually to make Melodyn sync up again. So a fully intergrated tool would be quite nice. Not that I think Roland will allow throwing out VV.

If they could make VV polyphonic, I'd be happy. Not like it's impossible-- if Melodyne can do it, why not Roland?. VV is a lot less cumbersome, far as I can tell.

@Clint Swank.. Maybe because the team behind Melodyne can ONLY pay attention to a single audio application, while the team at Cakewalk have to pay attention to a BIG whole suite containing a lot more applications than the single audio enhancement that's called melodyne? Oh - and by the way - even the whole team behind Melodyne did not succeed in creating a simple real-time VST plugin... While Melodyne is great it is hardly real-time...

I have been a CW/Sonar user for many years (before "Cakewalk" even had audio tracks), but after struggling the last few years with a few particular bugs in Sonar that CW absolutely refuses to fix, I threw in the towel and bought S1 earlier this year. It has been great, but it was missing some features. Then they released V2 and essentially everything that was missing for me have now been added. What an excellent DAW this turned out to be! And get this... The upgrade price from S1 V1.6 to S1 V2 was $99. That gave me Melodyne Essential, which is now integrated into S1 just as well as VV is in CW (but with much better end results, and no crashing). But that version of Melodyne only gives you monophonic support. Since I already had an old copy of Melodyne Plugin, I upgraded to Melodyne Editor for $129, which replaces Melodyne Essential in S1 for the one that has polyphonic support in addition to other features. And the best part? I got an email today from Celemony saying that Melodyne Editor 2 will be released in November, and that I can upgrade for free since I registered Editor after Oct 1. Nice! So for $228 I upgraded to an awesome DAW, and got the current Melodyne Editor with a free upgrade next month to V2. I really don't think Sonar will ever catch up. Not just in features, but in stability, workflow and reducing their bug density to that of S1. S1 even gets basic MIDI routing right - what a concept!

And Melodyne 2 is even better now with the new scale detective and attack tool! Anyone can upgrade their 1.3 editor for $99. "The new Attack Speed tool allows you to edit the starting transients, that are so determinative of the sound – for each note separately. An important new design implement, not only for percussive sounds. In addition, with the new Time Handles, even time progressions within individual notes can be reshaped. Among other things, this makes more detailed editing of vocals possible. http://www.celemony.com/cms/index.php?id=editor2 The new True Scale & Tuning functions offer those who produce Arab, Indian or contemporary and microtonal music the ideal function set for editing their work with Melodyne. True Scale & Tuning also has the power to enhance conventional music production, by making it easy for users to explore the emotional and atmospheric subtleties of different scales and temperaments and integrate them into their own music. Countless different scales and temperaments can be loaded, edited in detail, and even created from scratch."

I think it will be a good indicator as to whether or not Cakewalk will truly be able to keep up w/ the fast pace at which the DAW race seems to be moving.

It's not all sweetness and light with Melodyne ARA. I've always had trouble running Melodyne in Sonar: it falls over and locks up Sonar after five minutes or so despite my high spec PC. So I've bought the new Studio One 2 Pro so I can use it to fix vocal tracks. It's certainly quite impressive the way Melodyne is available inside S1 as just another way of viewing an audio track's contents. But as I was checking out of interest my other VSTs inside Studio One I found that IK plugin products don't work, i.e. Amplitube 3 and TRacks 3 Deluxe. As soon as I dragged one in as an effect S1 fell over. The debate about this can be found over on the S1 forums. A clever user there tracked it down to an issue with Intel duplicated libraries, or something. A manual fix is possible but you have to hack your PC's 'environment variables'. There's an explanation on an Intel web page here: http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/opm-abort-initializing-libguide40dll/ You can see on that Intel page that technical users aren't happy about having to apply a dodgy fix to overcome this issue. I've applied it and all seems ok now. But I'm no expert and I'm going to be nervous from now on whenever I experience any odd behaviour on my DAW as to whether it's related to this fix I've applied blindly. The issue rears its head because ARA means loading Melodyne at the time the DAW software is loaded, because it's built in to it. IK plugins loaded afterwards then baulk because Melodyne is already using a resource they need. So who's at fault? Presonus blame Intel, rightly it may seem, but does that absolve them? They also say they can't test all plugins. But Amplitube and TRacks aren't exactly obscure products, surely? Should IK be apportioned any blame, as NI's Guitar Rig work ok? What about Melodyne? All I can conclude is that it's the user that gets caught in the crossfire here. We buy products and expect them to work. If something goes wrong with my car I don't expect to have to trawl forums and the internet in general, find a possible solution, then lift the bonnet of my car and tinker with complicated stuff that I have no expertise in. I wouldn't want to listen to the car manufacturer blaming a component manufacturer. Why should the computer processor/DAW software/plugin industries be any different? Anyway, if Cakewalk is thinking of licencing ARA from Melodyne then they might be interested in that Intel link above. Noel?

Himmm, Well here we go again with your system doesn't work but my system works..... I installed the demo and have not had troubles with Melodyne (Editor), iZotope plugs (Alloy, Ozone), IK Multimedia (TRacks, White and Black plugs) have not tried Miroslave Phil or ARC yet. I also pulled in some Sonar plugs and they run too. The only thing that could have been a problem (but I knew about it, so I avoided it on install) was accepting the S1V2 install default of importing the S1V1 settings with Melodyne already installed (if you do this, S1V2 gives a incompatible message for Melodyne). Solutions is to reinstall Melodyne, or to not accept the default and do the install and let S1V2 rescan the plugs on first start (I did the latter during install). No biggie. So far, with two days of running S1V2, everything works as advertised (image that) no crashes or other problems - period. I also have my BCF2000 units working under HUI mode and other than the fader noise, no problems. Quite refreshing, so much so, I decided to spend my EXPANDED money on the $99 upgrade to S1V2. I'm not saying that S1V2 is perfect and I'll probably get a crash doing something, but it sure has been nice concentrating on music rather than fighting the software. With X1c, I was averaging as least one crash per session. I am running XP Pro SP 3 with a Asus Quad core. I also keep my system pretty clean, no MS products other than XP, and the only things installed are for the DAW plus, I only connect to the internet when I need to install a license for something. gs

fitzj The version of meloydne shipped with Studio2 is The essential version in other words a cut down version. The full editor package does not work even if you already own it. It would be very easy to have this as menu option but Meloydne is expensive if you want the full blown package Melodyne Essentials comes as a separate download with S1 2. Since I already had an older version of Melodyne Plugin, instead of installing the Essentials version, I paid the $129 upgrade price to Melodyne Editor (which includes the free upgrade to V2 next month). I then installed Melodyne Editor, and it integrated perfectly with S1 2. It shows up in the menus and I tested that it works as advertised (very impressive, I might add). Some people on the Presonus forums said you need to re-install it and make sure you also choose the VST 3 option. As far as the problem with plugins like Amplitude goes... I just confirmed that this is indeed a problem (quite a spectacular blowup, I might add). But as others have pointed out, this is an Intel problem, and my feeling is this will affect all DAWs. For instance, if you load a newer version of Melodyne as a plugin in Sonar, and then load Amplitude afterwards, it would most likely also blow up (as a developer, this makes sense to me). It has to do with bad versioning between libraries used when you use the Intel compiler. And to be honest, from my experience with Presonus, they are very responsive to problems people experience with S1. If there is something they can do about this, I believe they would. My experience with CW is quite different - they will forego fixing serious bugs in Sonar for adding useless features nobody asked for (and introducing a new generation of bugs in the process, burrying the old, tired bugs even deeper).

It looks like this tight integration with Melodyne requires VST 3 support (amongst other things). So if you decide to ignore this fact, and CW's users don't request that they implement VST 3, then forget about it. Calkwalk will have to move with the times and that includes vst3 maybe vst4 when its available who knows? I think we have to spend too much time trying to find this or that in in Sonar X1 a little like Microsoft office you know its there but in a completely different location. Presonus is very easy to use I feel for the new starter. Sonar x1 is a big learning curve for a new user.

Dan Or you can choose to simply not read threads that are clearly asking when CW is going to implement a feature that another DAW has. You can't explain what the feature is if you aren't allowed to mention the other DAWs. Pointing out the value-add that such a feature provides is helpful in letting others know why Sonar would become a better product if it also implemented a similar feature. Should Sonar users ask CW to implement similar features by posting on the other DAW websites?

It's interesting that Freddie who started this thread hasn't been around for 3 days. Maybe he's doing the coding for Cakewalk since he thinks it is a cakewalk to do it? A cakewalk, for those that aren't old enough to know is a term for something that's supposed to be really easy to do (amongst other meanings for the word).

SilkTone fitzj Why are Presonus users moaning on this forum. This is a cakewalk forum. Where are the moderators? As long time Sonar user, I think it is worthwhile for those that choose to stick with Sonar to be aware of what the competition is doing. If you put blinders on, you won't know that CW is doing you a disservice with the direction they are taking Sonar in. I also used to blindly defend Sonar. Go look at my post history. For example, CW already said they looked into VST 3 support, and there was nothing worthwhile hence they don't plan to implement it anytime soon. It looks like this tight integration with Melodyne requires VST 3 support (amongst other things). So if you decide to ignore this fact, and CW's users don't request that they implement VST 3, then forget about it. You'll forever be stuck with the inferior VV if you want that kind of tight integration. I agree with Silktone. knowing what the competitor offers is fundamentally important information for any business that wishes to remain relevant and fiscally solvent. Cakewalk will not always be the sole innovators of all new DAW advancements, and therefore, they need to keep in step with developments that come about from outside of their own research and development. We too have a vested interest in Cakewalk's future, as users of Cakewalk software, since we have invested both our time and our money into it. Naturally, we would all like to see Cakewalk succeed and prosper, so that our investments are not squandered. But we are, in essence, like voters that cast our ballots with our dollars and our comments, hoping that the decision-makers will respond to the dynamics of important technological improvements in order to make the proper tactical decisions that will benefit both us and Cakewalk. I wouldn't have bought Sonar X1 if I didn't think that Cakewalk and Roland Corp were not capable and innovative in the music industry, and it is my sincere hope that they will gather all of their intellectual and material resources together to meet the demanding challenges of the 21st century music industry.

Sonar needs a few things to make it top notch. Protools 9 is being withdrawn and version 10 is only 32bit because the native plugins will not work in 64. We need less plugins and synths and a better workflow. I feel the console is not right too wide or too narrow. Names in tracks and outputs all squashed up even using a 24" screen

Skyline_UK It's not all sweetness and light with Melodyne ARA. Noel? Fact is the problem already exists in Sonar as well if you try and use Melodyne with Amplitube 3.5 or newer as well as other software that uses the newer lib. I've been using the work around for quite awhile and my system has suffered no ill effects from it, though obivously I'd prefer not too. Until Celemony updates Melodyne to use the newer lib, (and they've known about it for 2 years now and done nothing) this will be a problem for any DAW. Why it's not a bigger problem with more software I can only guess that either few programs use either lib, or few programs use the newer lib. Dan

I purchased studio one artist around Christmas for $14.00 as a promotion to upgrade it to the Studio one Producer at anytime for $99.00. I never installed Studio one artist, I just saved the install file to an external hard drive and stored the registration and serial key away. I am going to take advantage of the Studio One v2 upgrade offer for $99.00 and see what it has to offer. The demos on youtube look well. It offers K-metering options for mastering/built in. Also a seperate mastering section with the ability to remix the song by clicking on it to open and edit the song, and them master it all in the same window. Also, the inclusion of Melodyne helps.. Sometimes, you have to look at other options... Peace
