Softly I Go--collab with Rik (morenoise) new mix 8/2

As some of you may know, I've sorta lost my muse for composing lately. :(  And, well, time seems to be at a premium too.  So I was rather happy when this came out of my fingers a week or so ago.  It took a few days to get it to where I liked the flow.  As I was working on it, I kept imagining how good it would sound with Rik's amazing guitar playing.  I just heard it with his part a few minutes ago and wasn't disappointed in the least.  :)

Let us know what you think.

Softly I Go

OK, Reece suggested a bass and I added an Ivory synth just because.  I hope we've addressed all the former issues.  Thanks for all the help and comments so far! :)

    Hi Janet and Rik,

I felt this piece 'came alive' at 2.15 and 2.42 and I thought the balance of the two instruments was particularly complimentary/sympathetic from the fall at 4.06 to the end.  That's just to my defective ears of course but, hey, they're all I've got and for what it's worth they enjoyed it.

    Regards,

    Vincent.

That was pretty cool. I'd like to hear it with more guitar... there were some great piano parts in there that I'd like to hear the guitar doubling and responding to. Having the guitar just play a monophonic melody seems a waste of its potential. This is the sort of thing I'd end up recording 20 guitar parts for but use a flute for the melody. Still it was very pleasant and I think it would be a great track to add a vocal to.

I really like this. The combination of piano and guitar really works here. I think the best bit is where the piano and guitar work in tandem at about 3:00 with the descending notes and then the guitar goes off back up again by itself.

    'nuff said!

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Thank you, Vincent.  Glad your ears enjoyed it. :)

Thank you, Chappel.  :)  Yes, this could have gone several different ways I imagine, and I'm tickled with what Rik played.

Glad it made you smile, Wookiee. :)

Thank you, Terry.  Yeah, I love that part at 3:00 too.  I was just sitting there waiting to see what he would play there...and I thought it was perfect.  :)

    It sounds very nice.

The guitar is a bit too up front in the mix, the piano drops out as soon as the guitar came in.
Also the spacial setting on the piano (ambient or slight delay) is making the piano sound in the background too much....all just my morning pinions.

I can't get to soundclick or reverbnation from work (they block them and all other soundstreaming sites, well, except for youtube for whatever reason...)

anyway - so I asked Janet to send me the mp3.  I'm listening on a crappy soundmax and crappy headphones, but this is absolutely beautiful!  Here's what I replied back to Janet with:

That was beautiful!  I love Rik’s nylon playing!  I would love to play nylon like he does!  Your piano is excellent here of course and the two instruments complement each other fantastically!  That’s why I really wanted to hear this because I thought it would be a fantastic marriage and I was not disappointed!

The only suggestion I have is that I’d like to hear an upright bass added to it.

Thank you, Chas, and welcome to the forum! :)

Thank you, Reece!  Wow!  Really glad you liked it.  I sorta thought our styles would compliment each other too...just took me awhile to come up with something.  His gorgeous playing just 'makes' this piece, IMO.  Bass?  That would be fun...I'll see about that.   Sure you don't want to hear drums with it too?  lol

Wow--thank you, Mark!  It must be Rik's contribution that made it spectacular cause I wasn't that thrilled with it when I sent it to him.  lol

Hi All, thanks very much for listening. Janet is way too critical on her own composition. I liked it the moment I heard it so it was really easy to play on this. The guitar part was the first, and only, take I did and while it's technically not perfect , I like the feel of it.

    Greetings, Rik

P.S. To whom it may concern, I like to collaborate but only on pieces that I feel I can contribute something original to.

Nice piece.  Lovely melody and chord changes.  Top notch composition Janet.

I never critique but this piece is pretty and I hear more in my head than usual so I will share my thoughts.

I feel the guitar is too far out in front of the piano.  The two instruments don't sit well together (sound, not performance).

The space around each instrument sounds quite different to me.    A remix can pull this together.

Also, volume changes between instruments would be nice, passing the lead melody back and forth.  Let the guitar hide beneath the piano sometimes.

One last thing, expand the melody range of the guitar.  Deep acoustic sounds would be nice.  Mid to high register plucking seems predominant.  Without space around the guitar it sounds treble and thin.

    Best regards,
    Lance
