[Solved] ASIO4all brings a halt to my home studio.....
Since installing the Akai EIE my Sonar 7 will not output any audio.
Yes..all drivers thoroughly checked...everything set perfectly correct...I've spent three solid days installing every which way. I get audio out thru Windows Media Player and Soft Synths ....but Sonar has the now infuriating X against WDM USB audio out ... This is THE WORST software malfunction I have ever experienced . Asio 4 all has a feedback address but no reply to my query although they hint that this is an inherent fault. Apart from Control Panel/ Sound and the preferences in Sonar I've nothing left to try to rectify the problem.
Totally dejected now !

Try a different driver. ASIO4all screwed up my system too. ASIO4all attempts to use WDM as ASIO. It works for some, sometimes.

Doesn't the EIE have dedicated ASIO drivers? ASIO4ALL is not recommended except as a last resort solution for people who are forced to use the dedicated sound chip on a laptop.

As AT notes ASIO4all is just a wrapper that in effect disguises WDM drive as an ASIO driver. I would uninstall the ASIO4all driver and see how it works with just the WDM driver. I can see from the AKAI web site they do not do an ASIO driver and actually recommend ASIO4all.

The problem is probably not with SONAR but interactions with Windows. So different software or an upgrade would likely yield the same results. I highly recommend going into Device Manager and disabling (not necessarily uninstalling) ALL audio drivers under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers except for ASIO4ALL and see what happens.

Try disabling that audio Device on High Definition audio Buss

Ok thanks....I've done that....still the X I'm afraid I'm maybe going to admit defeat...I've had bad upgrade glitches in the past and I was hoping that with the Akai it would only be a small one ...but this is the mother of them all.

This forum is littered with hours wasted by people using ASIO4ALL. It definitely can work, and I admire that they've managed to trick Windows into doing something it was never intended to do, but it's a kludge. Also the system properties in ASIO4ALL can be kind of confusing, make sure they're squared away. Another option is simply to live with WDM or MME... Don't forget that sometimes you have to restart when you make a change in device manager.

Craig Anderton is quite correct in that many changes in the device manager require a full restart of your CPU. Try a cold boot (turn off your machine and wait for a few minutes, then restart).

ASIO4ALL and "Home Studio" really don't belong in the same thread title. And looking at the documentation and specs on the Akai, I'm not sure it qualifies to be part of a "studio", either. It has no native ASIO driver, and only supports 44.1kHz x 16-bit audio. The documentation itself recommends using ASIO4ALL if latency is too high, which I have never seen another interface manufacturere do. The documentation doesn't even refer to a native driver type at all, but presumably it will be available as a WDM device if you set that mode in SONAR. Based on everything I'm seeing, I would strongly recommend you return the Akai to the seller if possible, and get something, anything, that comes with a native ASIO driver. The Akai seems like something that would have come to market 15 years ago, and be selling on eBay for $40 now. There are many superior interfaces out there for the price, though they won't have analog meters - a questionable value - and may only offer two channels.

I really do appreciate everyone's help and input here. I'm afraid the WDM options don't work either.
I find it quite abysmal that I've bought something that clearly has inherent problems that are known and yet is still advertised without any prior advice or warning regarding compatibility with certain DAWs.
As it is now I've wasted three full days spent £140 and instead of improving my system it has crashed my studio and caused hours of frustrating headaches.
But again. Thanks for everyone's input.

Maybe if you went back to an earlier backup just before you installed the asio4all. That might help.

Brutal. Yeah, try to return it and get something that uses true ASIO. I find it surprising any good hardware company would release an interface without ASIO support these days... and AKAI is a decent company as far as I know. I'd kind of like to get some of their MIDI controllers. I've had nothing but success with my Focusrite Scarlett interface and for 140 pounds (sorry I do not have a pound symbol on my keyboard) I think you could get an 8i6. At the very least you can get a 2i6 (which last time I checked goes for about $150 USD or less). ASIO4ALL is an interesting and helpful tool in a pinch. I've used it to get much better results when using onboard soundcards for just goofing around but it is no match for a good interface with proper ASIO drivers.

I agree with Beepster. ASIO4ALL has its place and can work wonders for the performance of onboard sound systems with SONAR when needed in a pinch, traveling with a laptop, etc. But no external audio interface worthy of the name should need it.

Once again thanks...I haven't totally given up just yet. Also this is happening... On opening Sonar 7 the audio output in the Akai audio panel does seem open..but....as soon as I load any tracks then the X pops up against audio out. On the box it does say plug and play ..no drivers required. When I remove the whole thing ...hard ware and software ...the reinstall I do get messages saying no drivers ...the device is not working properly...but even with the ASIO 4 all def in the system, I cannot force it to recognise the drivers. I really don't understand the tech side ...but I'm getting the misery pretty good.

Hallelujah ! ! ! ! !
I did yet another removal and reinstall and set the drivers in Sonar to MME 32 bit......
This time ....audio out !! No Asio4all Audi box visible anywhere....but it seems Sonar is playing normally . But it's 2.30 am here...I'll have to do a quality check tomorrow.
But a BIG thank you to all who helped and supported me in this trial....good on ya !

Latency with MME can be pretty significant, but at least it works. If you get weird distortion or ring modulation type sounds, you'll need to increase the amount of latency.
