I have been searching (hoping) for the E model Rhodes for many years. For me, this alone is worth the price of admission. Let alone the vast and varied library that comes with Keyscape. YMMV.

Could you elaborate on that? I'm not a sophisticated-enough Rhodes aficionado to appreciate the differences between models.

The E model is actually the best of the Leeds Rental instruments that was used for sessions back in the day in LA.  It had been modified a bit and was extremely even, rich and chimey.  I used to use an entire pedal board of outboard gear to get the sound that the "E" model had by itself.

Wishing they would sell just the light version that includes the 'E'. I received an email announcement but looks like they are only selling the Whole SheBang! $399 just don't work for me right now.

Finally watched the video this morning and...wow. I think I can get rid of Ivory II after this...

Sounds like a beautiful library.

Dan, do you remember how much you paid for Ivory? First time I saw it, as a new product, IIRC it was going for $300 or more. I was blown away by it, listening on headphones at NAMM. 12 velocity layers was groundbreaking at the time, but I remember thinking "no way I can justify that much money for a piano library".

Thanks for that link, ol' pal. Harold Rhodes himself pronounced it the best Rhodes he'd ever heard. Seems unlikely the owner would have parted with it. More probable that Eric rented it from him. Either way, it's a one-of-a-kind instrument and I can see why you'd declare that it alone justifies the price of Keyscape.

Oh I'm sure Eric didn't buy it...but he paid a pretty good price to sample it.  Although, since they say they took everything apart and refurbished and refined...perhaps he did buy it.  Lucky duck.

If I remember right, it was $279 through Amazon. This was about 4 or so years ago. I've since added some Kontakt pianos that I "go to" more often, but the Ivory II pianos are really pretty. Just not "Keyscape" pretty, IMO.

As I thought. That puts the $399 price tag in better perspective, I think. 24 instruments for 50% more than 1 instrument. Not even taking into account whether or not Keyscape sounds significantly better.

For you piano players this does seem awesome. My negative reaction to it not being something "new and innovative" was probably egged-on by my time being wasted all day from their horrible launch schedule.

Anyway, carry on...

It was 3 pianos, so adjust the percentages accordingly...

Ivory II comprises a full line of acoustic pianos, including Grands and Uprights. The Grand download package (3 sampled instruments) is $329 at Sweetwater. The Upright download, including 4 pianos, is $279.

It remains to be seen whether Keyscape's acoustic pianos represent any kind of breakthrough, not only compared to Ivory but also Ravenscroft, Pianoteq, and other examples of current sampling tech. Hard to judge that from the video. But it's fairly obvious to me that the Keyscape electric pianos do indeed raise the bar. They're the stars of the show here.

Cheers,
Eddie

That's what I'm waiting to see as well. If they just threw them in to make it more complete but didn't spend a whole lot of time perfecting them beyond what other piano libraries have done, then it lowers the overall value for me.

My impression of the C7 from the video demo was highly positive, even thrilling. And I own and use OTS' Rosewood Grand every single day and think it's the best piano sim out there (I also own Pianoteq, Sampletekk Mark II grand, and the 8DIO 1969 Legacy Steinway. And I used to sell Steinways and generally prefer them. But the Keyscape C7's did have something special in them that I heard. Just too bad they didn't see fit to sample any other brand of Grand Piano, e.g., Steinway, Bosendorfer, Fazioli, etc.  I would agree the electric pianos, etc. are the true gems here, but I wouldn't rule out the acoustic samples, either.

I've been playing the piano for more than half a century, and never learned how to half-pedal. Except on those occasions when my pedal controller starts to slip away from me while I'm playing on a concrete floor.

Nor did I ever find a use for the soft pedal, much to the consternation of my parents, and later, the downstairs neighbors.

That's a perfect description of my half pedal technique. The skittering pedal. Somehow I can even chase it around carpeted surfaces as well:-)

Of course, usually I tape it down.

I watched the video and really enjoyed the performances and instruments (the chap in the yellow hat was a bit good like).  However, it's not something that I'd personally consider buying as I am most assuredly not a keyboardist and would make little good use of it.

Well - If you need it or not is open for discussion. Personally I think it will be in my library within a year. I could be biased (because I also have Omnisphere 2, Trilian and Stylus RMX), but as I do not have a real good piano emulation now I think it's just an "fit" for me. The fact you can use this instruments in Omnisphere too has sold it for me.

Anyway - It seems they had a real nice launch party: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKsGGUbm7sk

I'm afraid I'll have to get it too. I'm a sucker for keys, and though the grand might not be up there with the very best that use more than 100 gig for the piano alone, those Keycape electrics are just too sweet to pass on. Plus the ability to use them in Omnisphere.
