Sonar 7: First Impressions / Bug Report

Thanks a lot Blades. At least I know that a couple of you guys are still here .

I agree, the Bakers have done an excellent job with Sonar 7 and they keep showing us, with each release, how much they listen. This is why I love this company and will keep supporting them. Anywho, let me know when you test these.

I've got that card too and read somewhere (maybe here) that turning off Ansitropic filtering and Antialiasing can improve daw performance. It's in the NVidia control panel 'Manage 3D settings'. I don't have the problems you mentioned and don't know if it will improve anything but turning those off has no adverse affect here.

Yeah, don't worry. I know about your recent issue with the motorboating thing so I understand. Solve that first and then, when you have the time, you can try the couple of things I've found so far.

Oh yeah, you wanna turn all the crap OFF. I have everything set to "high performance" on mine. There's a new thread that speaks about the motorboating issue (with a possible solution) you might wanna check out krizrox.

RXP FIX:

Wassup guys!

I've got good news. Thanks to Honest_Al and Zonno I was able to fix my problem with the RXP player in Sonar. All you need to do is download and install this file:

But before you install this you need to follow these steps provided by Zonno:

1. Download the Rex Shared Library.dll 1.6 version form the propellerheads webpage. This is NOT version 1.6. The installer says "This will install the Rex Shared Library 1.5.4 on your computer".
2. DO NOT start Reason, since it will overwrite this version. The 1.5.4 version will be installed in \Windows\System32.
3. Copy the 1.5.4 version from "\Windows\System32" to "\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR 7 Producer Edition"

Now go ahead and use Reason and SONAR.

You can always PM me and I will send you the 1.5.4 version if this procedure does not work for you.



Important: To avoid overwritting the original Library file found in the system32 folder, first move it to your Desktop. Then proceed to install version 1.5.4 (it automatically installs to the system32 folder hence this workaround). Place version 1.5.4 into your Sonar Producer folder and relocate the original version 1.6 into your system 32 folder. That should do it!

I hate to tell you that there's still a problem.

All works fine untill you start Reason.
When you start Reason the old 1.5.4 version of Rex Shared Library.dll is automatically replaced by the 1.6.0.4096 version

I tried to research this further. I bet the 1.6.0.4096 version, which will not work with RXP, is extracted from a file called Reason.rpcp during the startup of Reason.

I just mailed Propellerheads Tech Support a problem report

The problem form said: "Mission accomplished. The email you just sent is now in the safe hands of Propellerhead Software."

I'll keep you posted.

I might be the only one with this problem, but here is my bug report:

I can't seem to open a project in Sonar 7 that uses Kontakt 2 and Guitar Rig 2. I am using it in Windows XP. I have 3 gb's of Ram.

I have this problem when I install Guitar Rig 2 as an effect with Kontatk (using the Prominy LPC sample library with the superperformance multi loaded).

I can load up Guitar Rig 2 in the project and it works fine. But, when I open up the project after, it freezes.

If I load it while holding the shift button, I can load the project without Guitar Rig 2. So, it is not the large multi causing it.

Similarly, if I load the project in safe mode and do not load Kontakt 2, but do load Guitar Rig 2, it will load Guitar Rig 2 fine.

So, it appears there is some interaction between Guitar Rig 2 and (in my case) Kontakt 2. (If course this is a little ironic, considering they are both NI products).

Interestingly, I do not have this problem with Guitar Rig 1.

Also, I was doing the exact same thing in Sonar 3.1.1 (I just bought Sonar 7) and I did not have a problem.

FYI, the 7.01 update did not fix this (neither did updating my Echo Mia drivers)

If anyone can replicate this or has any suggestions, I am all eyes.

Listen, the final solution is in JoseC 's post. I somehow misread it at first.

Copy the Rex Shared Library.dll version 1.5.4 to the \Program Files\Cakewalk\Sonar Producer Edition Folder

Thanks for the info. I didn't install Reason on my DAW (recently after reformating my drive) since I barely use it anymore plus I have all the cool synths that come in S7. Still, keep the info comming since it will be useful to others who do use Reason like yourself. Thanks again for your time.

Yes, installing the DLL in the SONAR exe folder makes it work because only SONAR uses the "old" rex library, while all other apps, Reason included, go on with their own updated version.

This trick works thanks to the Microsoft DLL Hell softening mechanism added in Windows 2000.

Cakewalk tech support suggested I uncheck 64 bit processing, which didn't work (it was already unchecked). If that didn;t work, they suggested moving the Guitar Rig 2 folder to another location. For some reason that worked! The problem appears to be solved. Cudos to Cakewalk tech support!

Thanks guys - I will look into this. I have to check but I think I've been through all the various graphics card settings. No joke - I've probably tried at least a half a dozen different video cards this past year. I came back to this one mainly because it was fanless. But thanks again - I will check out my card settings again to make sure nothing is hogging resources. Good point!

Sorry about replying here, but I am still encountering problems with the RXP player in Sonar 5 PE.

Jose7822, what do you think? I tried to install the shared Library DLL, (but I had not moved the older DLL before. My mistake) and eventually completely uninstalled REASON from my system, As I am not using it that much anyway. I thought that would do it and put RXP back online. But it did not. Any tips?

The rex dll 1.5.4 should be put in the same folder as the SONAR executable, have you tried this?

Hey Yummay,

That is very strange since I have both Reason 3 and Sonar 5 on my internet machine and don't have the RXP problem. I think that became a problem in S6 or S7. Maybe you have a more recent version of Reason? In any case, I would try moving the Library DLL and place it inside your Sonar Producer folder (hopefully that'll fix your problem). Let us know.

I'll have a look when i'll get back from work. I'll move the rex dll 1.5.4 file to my sonar folder... unless it got uninstalled when I uninstalled reason adapted 2.5.

I am not really using reason, so I just want to get the RXP online and use the audio data provided both by Cake and Proppellerhead in it.

Must I re-install SONAR completely or what?

I guess that's the only option left, a complete re-install of Sonar might fix the problem. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I'm thinking of upgrading my Sonar 6 Producer to Sonar 7 studio, mainly for the improved MIDI editing and the Step Sequencer. I've read stuff on this thread, and others, about bugs in the Step Sequencer, and big CPU usage.
Can anyone tell me please, have the updates gone any way to improving matters with the Step Sequencer?

Yeah, the Step Sequencer is much better in Sonar 7.0.2. The CPU usage has gone down so it's not as big of an issue anymore. The same applies to the new Mastering plugs. I believe that all the bugs reported in this thread have been fixed in either v.7.0.1 or v.7.0.2, including the RXP bug. If you use MIDI a lot then I wouldn't hesitate, get Sonar 7. It is the best Sonar yet.

I'm using MIDI a lot for drums now so I think I'll get some benefit from the new stuff. Probably can't afford the Producer Edition at the moment, I'll have to miss out on the new Mastering stuff (sigh) but sounds like it's worth upgrading to the Studio Edition.

Sorry about that man. I guess something got corrupted along the way. If that's the case I'm affraid the only option left is a full re-install of Windows and other apps . Not sure if it's worth your time though.

I have widely read previous posts regarding CPU metering (windows Vs Sonar)
this has to be a bug. I have seen a
%75 increase in task managers cpu meter running the same midi file (yes thats right no audio or pluggins at all, just a roland module) between sonar 6.0 and 7.02

in 7.02 CPU is maxed at %100 when playing the file
no file open at all backround is %15 (IE program open no file loaded)
CPU reads 0 after quitting Sonar
%100 while playing a midi....... really come on what hope is there
