Reporting the correct folder for me. Using X1 producer on Win 7 64 bit.

Something that may or may not be relevant: I've got both 32 bit and 64 bit versions installed, it has chosen the 64 bit version as the "correct" one.

No that's fine, and yes, do delete it afterwards...

OK - Sorry to report I got the message that Helper was unable to determine which version of Sonar X1 I have installed.

R

Oh man, just when I thought I was onto a winner :-(

If I remember correctly Randy, you are a Studio user?

Helper assumes that Studio users will have the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\Sonar Studio\X1
Within there, it looks for an 'InstallDirectory' entry, which should be the folder where Sonar is installed.

I'd be really grateful if you'd take a look and let me know where I've gone wrong...

Yes, I have X1 Studio.  OK, that folder is in the regedit of course, but there isn't an "InstallDirectory" entry in that folder - Is that what you meant?

Thanks Randy. Clearly I need to find out a bit more about Studio And Essential installations, and allow for the Program Files (x86) folder too.

OK, another request for help!

I'm struggling with Studio and Essential. The best I can do at the moment is make educated guesses as to where the right files and/or registry settings are, and so far my guesses haven't always been right. This is wasting a lot of time, and, as it stands, I can't really make sure Helper works with anything other than Producer.

However, I have written a little batch file that can take a look at your PC and save some information about your Sonar installation. This is what it does:

1. Saves a copy of your 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software' registry settings to a text file.
2. Saves a copy of your 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software' registry settings to a text file.
3. Saves a list of files in your 'Program Files\Cakewalk' folder to a text file.
3. Saves a list of files in your 'Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk' folder to a text file.

The idea is that you download the batch file as a .zip file, extract it to a new folder on your PC, run the batch file, then finally email me a copy of the 4 text files it creates.

Important Privacy Alert!
Obviously this will give me some information about your PC. 99% of it is completely innocuous, and will be more or less identical for everyone with the same version of Sonar, but the first registry file it creates (called SonarRegistry1.txt) does contain some serial numbers and your user name. This is easily remedied. Simply open it up in Notepad and search for 'Serial Number' and 'User Name'. Then delete any lines you find. You can also quicky scan through the files to make sure they don't contain anything else you would rather keep private, but I don't think there is anything else. Besides, even if you do send me the files, and I discover some personal information in them, I will simply delete it straight away.

So, if any Studio or Essential users are willing to do this in the interests of improving Helper, then let me know and I'll post the details. If not, I'll quite understand because of the hassle, and privacy issue.

Thanks!

Hi benstat...

Great, thanks a lot Keni. You can download it here:

http://www.staton.co.uk/downloads/getsonarinfo.zip

Extract it to a new folder on your desktop (or somewhere convenient). Then open the folder and you will see a single file called 'GetSonarInfo.cmd'.

Before I tell you how to run it, I'll be a bit more specific about exactly what it does in the interests of transparency, and to reassure you that it isn't going to do anything it shouldn't. Open 'GetSonarInfo.cmd' in Notepad (right click it and choose 'Edit') and you will see the following lines:

@echo off
regedit /e "%CD%\SonarRegistry1.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software"
regedit /e "%CD%\SonarRegistry2.txt" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software"
dir "%ProgramFiles%\Cakewalk" /s /b > SonarFiles1.txt
dir "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Cakewalk" /s /b > SonarFiles2.txt

The two regedit lines are the ones that export your Cakewalk registry settings. The last two simply issue a 'dir' command on your 'Program Files\Cakewalk' and 'Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk' folders, and send the output to two more text files.

Here's what to do...

Run GetSonarInfo.cmd by simply double clicking it. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, you will probably get a couple of those security warnings which will need to be OK'd. Apart from that it will only take a second or two to run. Once it's finished, you should see 4 new .txt files in the same folder. It's those files I need. Before you send them to me (I'll PM you my email address shortly), don't forget to open them in Notepad and satisfy yourself that there's nothing private in them. Remember that SonarRegistry1.txt will contain a few serial numbers and your name. To delete those, simply search for 'Serial Number' and 'User Name' and then delete any lines you find.

Thanks very much for your help Keni. If anyone else is prepared to do this, particularly if you own Studio or Essential, or if you run both 32 and 64 bit Sonar on the same PC, it will assist my Helper development a great deal.

[Edit: I just ran it on my old laptop and it took about 15 seconds to run, so maybe not quite as quick on all PC's as I thought.]
[Edit 2: Just replaced the .zip file to fix a minor problem that resulted in the registry .txt files not being created if there were any spaces in the folder name.]

Hi, Ben - Catching up on messages.

OK - I grabbed your zip file, unzipped it and ran it.  All that happened was the black Command window came up, empty, waiting for me to do something. ------

Now, all of this is just to fix it up so Helper can start X1, right?  Or have it be in the Utilities?  Or both?  Meanwhile, I have the previous version which is working perfectly.  I open X1, then run Helper - just takes a few more seconds.  Not as elegant as what you're trying to set up, but it does work.

Remember I'm using X1 Studio, that's why I'm trying to help you with the new info you need.

FULL SCREEN MODE ISSUE WITH TWO MONITORS

if I have X1 open on my second monitor and invoke full screen it minimizes the program to my first monitor and I have to maximize then RESTORE  it to reappear.. ALT TAB will not re-invoke it. I can switch off full screen OK

NOW if I open X! and drag it to my primary monitor,  do the full screen on my primary monitor it functions correctly

LOVE the program BTW

Thanks for the bug report musicman. I've added it to the list. I use Sonar in a single screen environment, but I do have a dual output graphics card and an old LCD monitor I can dig out and do some testing with.

Hi Ben,
Good work - anything that can free up screen estate is good in my book!!

A quick test of BFD2 in jbridge seems to work fine (running 64 bit X1, on Win7 64 bit) - even with the multidock hidden, I could drop the BFD2 window onto the track view, and it puts it in the multidock.

One error I found, which you might already know about - if you float the multidock (in my case on a seperate monitor) and then try to hide it, it comes up with the error "Sorry the following error occurred: "Unable to find Multidock window" Sorry X1 Helper will now close"

Its not really a problem as such, as you can restart X1 Helper , but just in case you'd not spotted it!

Cheers
James

Thanks for the feedback James - very useful. I'll update the fix list.
Please would you try something for me? Float the Multidock on the same monitor as Sonar and let me know if it still happens. Multi-monitor testing has not been done so far!
Thanks again.

Hi Ben,
Sorry for the delay (I was away all weekend) - I've just tried this, and X1helper still comes up with the error, when floating the multidock on the same window as Sonar.

Of course you might have changed things since then - I've not tried the later version yet ...

Let me know if you need anything checking on multiple monitors.

Cheers
James
