Oh, and before Reaper version 4.0 (with included staff editor)!!! If Reaper gets a staff view at least we know Cakewalk will have one in Version X2 I'm sure.

I fully expected it in release 2.0 of Studio One, considering some of the devs are from the Cubase camp. Add to that the fact that even Acoustica's MixCraft was able to include a staff editor in pretty short order. With regard to Reaper, it is an acknowledged feature request, and they have said the plan is to have some level of staff editing in the future. What better time than version 4.0!!! I'm afraid we will see Cubase, PT, and Logic pull away from Sonar, leaving it in the dust in this regard.

I don't know about leaving it in the dust. But if Reaper does pull this off, they will get my money for version 4. My thought is that Cakewalk really wants to get it done. But, the new UI made it impossible this time around. With the new UI in place they can have the staff view be more drag and drop with the new skylight. That is my hope on the staff / notation view.

The thing about notation views is, while they're very important to the people who need to use them, they're not really a mass-market feature.

That's not what I meant; I know it's in those products. But if you were sitting down with a potential features list, asking "which of these will generate the most sales", I don't think notation would figure very highly. I make no value judgements about this, I just reckon that's the way it is.

I wonder if X1 has developed the drum maps feature into something similar to cubase expression??

Perhaps we should come up with a MOST WANTED features list for the Staff View? (So Cakewalk can have fun burning it on New Year's Eve!) OK. Here's my two cents. And it should be simple to impliment. Just as the Piano roll is available as an in-line editor for each track in track view, add notation as an option.

Atleast the slight GUI changes for the staff editor seem like a start (check the zoomed picture in the X1 Essentials page). I hope Cakewalk did something about the spacing issues on ledger lines... OT: Reaper devs said Reaper will have a staff editor, just didn't state when. Hopefully Reaper 4 is getting a midi overhaul so would seem likely. Only a couple of weeks to go. :)

I was just digging around to see if staff view and the lyrics view bugs were fixed - apparently not. We've been promised improvements for 10 years now. After fighting with the lyrics view to produce simple lead sheets for my music course, and getting no help from tech support, I've decided Cakewalk are not getting another cent from me. The announcement of Pro Tools 9 running on open hardware (mentioned above) is very attractive. I'll miss the Sonitus Suite and the soft synths but I'm not putting up with this buggy software any more. Regardless of what Cakewalk might claim Pro Tools is the industry standard and being able to work with commercial studios more easily will be a big plus.

Regardless of what Cakewalk might claim Pro Tools is the industry standard and being able to work with commercial studios more easily will be a big plus. I'm not singling your comment out specifically but this is an example of where the differing requirements of Staff View users may be causing us to lose out. I've used Staff View for 100s of projects since the Pro Audio days to input MIDI info (I've never really used PRV). I worked as an arranger and copyist in the days when it was all done with a pen and paper so I’m fairly aware of any limitations it may have in this respect (such as the tuplet thing) but for me Staff View has remained a crucial and, up until X1, very usable tool for inputting musical material. However, I would not expect to be able to use it to produce printable parts or scores to perform or teach from - that's a whole other application and I think it's unrealistic, and frankly a bit naive, to expect that from what is essentially a music creation package. I think Cakewalk developers (to their credit) have tried to respond to these unrealistic demands but it means we are ending up with a 'half-assed' package where the 'real' workflow- using notation to input MIDI info - has got slower in X1 while the illustrative stuff like chord symbols, lyrics and expression marks (which to me is pointless, and well catered for elsewhere in apps specifically designed to score/part writing) has got a bit easier. Sonar is never going to be one of those applications and nor should it be expected to be one. I'm not surprised the developers give the notation function a low priority if they feel they are being pressed to provide this. Personally, I'd like to see them draw a line under the issue and decide they'll maintain a notation tool for inputting, but also make it clear that it is not intended to be capable of producing printable sheet music. Going back to the quicker inputting functionality of 8.5.3 would be a start. I know this only one person's view and will catch some flak but the main point is that not all calls for improvements to Staff View are necessarily pulling in the same direction and some might be counter-productive.

B I don't understand your comment but as I said (if you read what I wrote) I was only using it as an example, not challenging its detail. Regardless of bugs or enhancements, I'm saying Sonar shouldn't cater for the production of printed music, which would of course include lead sheets.

What if there came a piece of code on a NOTEPAD (Apple) so you could view and edit notes on this additional screen? With the current power of Quad and Dual 6 computers some additional hardware doesn't slow down anything. This way you could take the notepad to the couch, write something, hit play and see if it matches up your expectation.... Such a tool would be great for Sonar X2 I think. And if they would stick to bug-fixing X1 now, that would be totally fine by me.... Above mentioned plug would be awesome on selected mobile phones aswell. But I'd love to hear from experienced writers/composers how large the desired screen should be for comfortable writing. A Roland NOTEPAD would be swell too.

Combo, You're using my post as an example but not singling it out? I doubt any one would understand what you mean by that. A bug is an error in a programme, it doesn't do what was intended and maybe causes harm (eg corrupted data or a crash). An enhancement is new functionality. The score view and lyrics view have BUGS that have not been fixed since at least Sonar 5. The lyrics view is unusable, that's what I want fixed - then my lead sheets would be fine. If you have ever used lyrics then you will be familiar with these bugs. ETA: Furthermore the point about Sonar not competing with Sibelius and Finale was made on the previous page and it's been regularly repeated on this forum. We want notation for composition, not publishing; you seem to have confused this by referring to "score/part writing".

Well Bretti I picked the wrong comment as an example didn't I? You've totally misunderstood my point. Please don't reiterate your points about bugs and stuff because I wasn't adressing them in the first place - I was simply saying there are differing points of view on the notation function for example people like yourself who use it to print lyrics and people like me who don't think there should be a lyrics view in the first place - and that the issue would be better being clarified one way or another. Finally (and I mean finally), I only use notation for composition, not publishing, that was my entire bloody point, which you misunderstood, entirely.

Combo, I did understand your point, you simply didn't take the time to understand mine. You just saw something about printing and went off on a strawman about publishing - something no one wants in Sonar. You're obviously not a songwriter. It's impossible to write a song with out lyrics, regardless of issues about printing.

I'd pay an upgrade fee for good notation on top of the X1 upgrade price once the rough edges are smoothed off. (I'd do the same thing for the matrix if it was up to Ableton standards.) I agree with a previous comment about the advertising of features raising expectations too high. However it's because I generally prefer using Sonar (8.53 at this moment) to both Cubase 5.5 and Ableton (8.whatever it is) that I care about the future of Sonar and hope it will improve in these areas that matter to me.

I want MXML support plus a functional staff view would be nice. Plus a couple of years ago we had a thread going and one of the forum member made a mock up of staff view with the PRV and it was great. Lines going from each view showing where they were tied together. Neat thing, in the discussion was how you could lock say a quarter note in the staff view but shorten it in the PRV with simple editing. With the new GUI I think this can be done. Still a Cakewalk Fan, but not holding my breath anymore. First time in a while that I didn't upgrade right away. More because of my disappointment that no Staff view attention was given than dislike of X1 in general. I know there will be bugs on a new Cakewalk release, but I usually like to help report them to help iron them out. Notation needed to expand Cakewalk market. My thinking on this is it would really help Cakewalk in the educator market. Anyway my 2 cents again on the subject.

No one thinks, wants or has ever said that. We need notation on par with Logic, Cubase and Protools. Sadly Cakewalk will likely never do that given their current direction. They very rarely refine things, opting instead to add more and more bells and whistles. They lowered their price and are going for a consumer market instead of a professional market. We're not going to see professional notation, video support, MXML or even a Session Drummer or Audio Snap that competes with anything else out there.

OK, just to add a new wrinkle to an already decrepit and dead horse. I put in problem report regarding the fact that snap to doesn't always work in staff view in X1, and they sent me back a closed report saying that feature isn't supported in X1. They recommended I put in a feature request. The problem, of course, is that snap to in staff view worked fine in 8.5, so I'm really confused. Are they intentionally taking a step backwards in staff view and note placement? Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks,
