"Sonarplt.exe has stopped working"?
Help! Last Saturday (and every day thereafter) I got this message when trying to open Sonar Platinum: "SONARPLT.exe has stopped working." I reinstalled Sonar Platinum, but still got the same message. While that message is displayed, a box is displayed for a moment on the lower right of my screen with this info: "ASIO4All.v2-SONAR.PLT 512 Samples 44.1mhz". That's it, and I have no idea of how to fix the problem - I can't opened the program. Yes, I have an email request pending with Tech Services; it's now four days old, and the phone tech service is booked up. I'd like to work on my open projects, but can't. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions on how I might troubleshoot this problem Thanks, Reynold Win10, 8MB Ram, 1.3GB Memory, Sonar Platinum (UptoDate).

The experts will show up here eventually, but I suspect it's related to that ASIO4All driver. What audio interface are you using?

I know your signature says "up to date", but what version of Sonar are you running and what is your audio interface ? could be a number of things. I do suspect ASIO4ALL (possible driver conflict.) but that might not be the case at all. the pop you see is just telling you sonar dropped the driver (ASIO4ALL) upon crash.

I'm using Sonar Platinum version: 22.7.0.41. At the time this happened I was trying out a new ART TConnect USB guitar 1/4inch-USB cord. I had set the audio input to the asio4all driver but got not sound from my speakers.

okay well you cant use both your audio interface (still don't know what that is yet) drivers + ASIO4ALL at the same time, hence the "driver conflict I spoke of earlier. if you uninstall ASIO4ALL and just use your interface soundcard drivers you should be back up and running.

I kept getting this error with Windows 10. I tried 7 times, but I'm back to Win 7 again. This is a real issue.

Hi Chuck, thanks for your help. I have uninstalled ASIO4All, but I'm still getting the same message "...stopped working" message. Since I can't open Sonar, I have no way of changing the drivers preference (if that makes sense). Reynold

Do you have an audio interface, or are you using the built in sound card on a laptop or desktop?

my thoughts exactly, this would really help the situation if he just gave us more information. I believe I've already asked once and referenced another time... what are you using for an audio interface ?

From what I remember Sound Blaster has always been a horrible audio device for Sonar. You will need a good audio card if you ever hope to have good sound. I have Komplete Audio 6 which has done quite well for me.

I'm spit-balling, but I wonder if you can disable the Recording and Playback devices in Win and then open SPlat. I think you'll get a warning message about there being no audio device, don't know if it will crash or not. The pros here will give you some better suggestions I'm sure:)

Hi Scott and other contributors to this post: Thanks for your help. I tried disabling the recording and playback devices, but that made no difference. I'm aware that SoundBlaster is no one's choice for a professional soundcard, but that's not the issue here, as far as I can tell. I'm still waiting to be contacted by Tech Service. Hope I don't have to wait forever!!! Regards

C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\AUD.Ini Make a back up just incase something goes array, then again im not sure what could be worse at this point. put that back up in a documents folder, then delete AUD.Ini. restart sonar, it will automatically produce a new one.

While I have not read all of the responses (time constraints) have you tried doing a system restore to the state your PC was before last Saturday. This will only restore system settings but your data will be intact. If this does not work then you can restore to any other time (including the state you were before you sis the system restore)
I am assuming that you have gone to the manufacturers websites for all your hardware and downloaded and installed the latest drivers. (Don't use Microsoft Windows update for this)
If none of these work, then I think you might be looking at a hardware problem somewhere....

your running low on options so this is what I would do. Hold down the CTRL key and start sonar (use the icon on the desktop) Not shift + Control. just simply Control. hold it down while double clicking the sonar icon on your desktop. to be honest ive never heard of holding down CTRL+SHIFT at the same time, maybe steve knows something I don't but I don't think so. so hold down control and try to strat sonar. if this doesn't work, move to plan B: If your program will no longer launch, you may be able to resolve the problem by forcing it to re-write some settings behind the scenes. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Hold down the Windows key on your computer keyboard, then press the R key to open the Run prompt.
2. Type in the following: %appdata%\cakewalk
3. Click OK. This opens the Cakewalk content folder in Windows Explorer.
4. Right-click the SONAR folder and select Rename on the pop-up menu.
5. Change the folder's name by adding the word “backup” to the end of it. For example: “SONAR Platinum backup”.
6. Close Windows Explorer and restart SONAR.
7. When prompted with the message “SONAR will now personalize your user settings”, click OK.

See Above Post As well: what you need to do is re-personalize sonar. some type of conflict is going on here. this is one of the reasons I never suggest using ASIO4ALL. im not saying ASIO4ALL is to blame, im simply stating it seems to cause more problems then not. once you can get Sonar to re-personalize your settings, make sure you are totally up to date on your Windows Updates, one in particular, the c++ redistributable. without this sonar will not run properly. it is imperative that you have all your Windows updates to the most recent as Cakewalk Codes with the latest Updates, thus you don't have them ? im guessing you know what happens. but especially the c++ redistributable. Also very important: Sonar uses Open GL graphics this causes a lot of issues with users who are behind on their Video drivers updates (yes I mean onboard video as well). once you are sure these updates are all done you can proceed knowing your PC is not of any issue, that's important because if you rule out one thing, you only have sonar to blame . serious though. the updates are critical. then re-personalize as I've given the steps above. let us know how it pans out.

Chuck, I've tried both those suggestions: the control start tried to initiate but I got this message: "Your personalization process didn't complete. You may have canceled the copy...Please redo the personalization if necessary." I don't know what that last live means. I tried your plan B with the same results as before, only now I have a Sonar Plat and a Sonar Plat Backup folder on my computer. To promidi: I wish MS had told me that I needed to turn on SystemRestore when I upgraded from WIN7 in June, but they didn't, so I'm not able to restore to a time before this event happened; but thanks for the advice anyway. What does anyone think of the idea of uninstalling Sonar Plat altogether and once and for all, and then reinstalling again? I reinstalled after it stopped working, but I can't remember now if I uninstalled the "broken" version. What's the worse that can happen? Reynold

not sure a reinstallation is going to cut it. need to get down to the root of the problem. do you have an Anti Virus running on this PC ? try shutting it off and try staring sonar again. you can also try to start sonar by right clicking on the desktop icon / choose Run as administrator. if you do decide to reinstall make sure you uninstall then remove registry entries, reboot, then re install. There could be several reasons for it to fail like this. a disk full condition or a read only folder or antivirus program blocking something. Steve was correct now that I think about it... by launching SONAR with CTRL and SHIFT held simultaneously. This will reset all files to factory defaults. Look for error messages when that is happening. but I thought that was for older versions of sonar not platinum. Also uninstall anything that had to do with that ART TConnect USB guitar. a driver, anything. I also would not rule out a possible virus.

Hi Chuck, Thank you for the continual attempts to help me fix my SonarPlt problems. So far nothing seems to be working. By the way, my Win10 system is up to date, as are the drivers for my various sound and video cards. I tried the Ctrl-Shift tip and got the same result. I've turned off my anti-virus software and tried to launch Sonar with the same result. I haven't uninstalled-installed yet. I'm disheartened by the lack of any response by Cakewalk Technical Support. This problem is now 10 days old. I've spent lots of hard-earned cash on Sonar like you and probably many other Sonar users on this Forum, so I expect more than an email promising to get back to me within 3-4 days. Have you or anyone else on the Forum had any dealings with the Technical Support department? Are they really THAT busy? Are there too few of them? Doesn't Cakewalk care about its user base? Reynold

Have you checked the system event viewer for any indication of a component fault. You might have to filter out the information events so you only see the warnings and errors. I would be looking for disk errors or other strange events. I would aslo be looking for services that have stopped and restarted unexpectedly. The "Sonar not responding errors" should appear in your application logs, so that will give exactly when and how often these errors are occurring.
Do you have someone that you can call over who knows IT who can give you a hand with this. If you have tried every software resolution that you can think of (short of a full system reinstall) then I would start looking at hardware.

Since Platinum worked after you upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 in June, until recently when it suddenly stopped working, you need to ask yourself what changed around that Saturday or since the last time you launched Sonar without issue? It looks like the smart guys here have covered the Sonar bases thoroughly, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and ask about Dell drivers and Windows updates. I did notice on the Dell support website for the XPS 8300 the disclaimer "Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade". http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/xps-8300/drivers Perhaps it is possible that a recent Windows update slipped in some drivers that it thought were better than what you had that were working? I had an experience like this with the August update to Version 1511(OS Build 10586.545). My Windows sleep mode went completely FUBAR after the update. After investigating, it turns out that there was a hidden update to my Asus chipset drivers for Intel IMEI. I re-downloaded the driver set that I had installed from the Asus site when I originally installed Win 10. When I tried to re-install the Asus version, Windows complained that there were already newer files onboard! I bypassed the warning and re-installed anyway. Problem solved! I'm not suggesting that this is your problem, just that Windows 10 updates can do some crazy s***!!! Take a look back at your Windows update history and see if any updates were installed around the time your problem started. Possibly you could try rolling back an update, or uninstalling drivers and replacing them with original Dell drivers.

I checked my Systems Log: on the day and time Sonar stopped working I found an error message that indicated that the error was in the USER32.dll module. I looked in the SonarPlt file in my Programs file and could not find a USER32.dll module. That leads me to think that if I uninstall my current SonarPlt and reinstall a fresh copy that the USER32.dll module will be reinstalled. Comments? Thanks, Reynold

There is also a check you can run for missing or corrupted Windows system files ... System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. This article describes how to run the System File Checker tool to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files.
