Song remakes better than the original

Of course it's all subjective (as always), but in the CH your opinion matters.

Here are a few of my favs.:

Geoge Benson: On_Broadway (original by The Drifters)

Van Halen: Ice_Cream_Man (original by John Brim)

Van Halen: Dancing_in_the_Street (original by Martha & the Vandellas)

G3: Red_House (original Jimi H.)

Sooooo many more.....

Ruby Baby.  Although Gene Vincent's version is definitive of a genre and killer diller, that ol wife beater (dern his hide) Donald Fagen's version is transformative.

Much easier to find examples of remakes that shouldn't have been done...

How about Madonna's horrid disco cover of American Pie?

Britney Spears doing Satisfaction.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Re: Song remakes better than the original 2016/01/12 13:47:30 (permalink)
Hi,

The king of these is, of course ... Manfred Mann and his Earth Band. Started with "Mighty Quinn", and later "Blinded by the Light", and later yet, "Singing the Dolphin Through" and all of these really excellent versions. But we all know that Jimi's Watchtower is the boss of all versions of any song!

Best?

I like 3 or 4 versions of "Season of the Witch", and specially the "Masked Marauders"

The Doors' version of Whiskey Bar should have given everyone a reason to do some Kurt Weill on stage ... instead it killed it. Beautifully though! Not sure that most rock audiences have any idea of this connection, though.

The Clams' "Close to You" is actually better and more fun to listen to than the original.

Guru Guru made Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry sound bad and cheap, which they were.

Steve Hackett can do Genesis way better than they did ... of course, they quit doing it, which did not help!

Stevie Ray Vaughn had a few dandies ... and his version of several of these were excellent.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood ... The War song ... absolutely nothing ... is awesome.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

How about one from the same artist (even though his original was also a remake)?  Compare the awesome live version to the pathetic studio one.

Already mentioned but Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watch Tower"

There are quite a few other good intrepretations of Dylan Songs.

Sandy Denny's cover of Richard Thompsons "For the Shame of Doing Wrong" and Elton's "Candle in the Wind" on her "Rendezvous" album.

I always liked Nazereth's version of "This Flight Tonight", so different from Joni Mitchells version, not better just very different.

Richard Thompson's album 1000 Years of popular music is a very entertaining set of covers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4WGsMplGxU
