SD3 appears to have the Tap To Find and the Time Line at the bottom, to drag and build tracks.  Those are two of the features that I love in EZD2, for the ease of song writing.  With those features, I could see myself no longer needing to use EZD2 at all; though I hope the expansions work with this.  At least all of the midi beats should.

I went to their page last night to see of there's any mention of a possible SD3 coming out. Nothing. Early morning I get an email with the announcement. Kind of weird.

Like many others here I am running out of disk space.

Recently I have really got into BFD3, I love the movable ambient mics, the groove editor and automatic drum labeling in Sonars PRV. I also splashed out on several expansions in the recent sale.

I see Toontrack have gone for flashy graphics rather than the utilitarian, low resource style of BFD 3, I have grown to prefer the later.

So I am on the fence at the moment. I like the new features and I will probably upgrade at some stage but its not urgent.

Re: Superior Drummer 3 Teaser--I think?! 2017/08/16 10:06:36 (permalink)
Obviously I'm going to agree with Glyn regarding BFD3, (just ask Bapu ) but there do look to be some nice new features in SD3 although a few of the ones that people are getting excited about are features that BFD3 and even BFD2 had 10 years ago. Loading your own samples and a propper drum grid editor being a couple and also the number of included effects. Superior 2 had something like 5 (?) and has now upped it to 35 in SD3 BFD2 had 35 10 years ago and I think BFD3 has 37.

I do really like the "totally" rescalable interface and even better, the detachable windows, this was something I'd asked for in the BFD3 feature request and whilst having it, "horizontally" extendable is useful for the mixer, a detachable and fully expandable window would have been so much better for the drum grid editor especially.

The drum replacement feature, assuming it's works as simply and effortlessly as they claim (do they ever?) looks especially good but I wonder how many people actually use drum replacemet now?
For me it was something I tried when mixing old 8 & 16 track demos that our band had recorded years ago before the digital age and I wanted to remix them with a better drum sound.

I've never really used midi loops so tap to find, as good as it is, would never be a selling point for me as I prefer to create my own drum tracks to go with my own songs not the other way round.

Newbie question..
With the UK sites, etc...if you live in the US...  you just use your Paypal like normal? Just pay the UK site.  Then you go to Toontrack and redeem your purchase with the purchased code received from the UK site?  The currency is automatically converted when you use Paypal with these sites?

Seems saving $ 60+ is a good deal, if a trusted site overseas.

Day in and day out I use EZD2 about 80% of the time.  I love the interface and its "EZ" workflow.  I don't really use SD2 very much at all.  But after viewing several walk through and demo vids on SD3 I think it will actually replace EZD2 as my new go to.  For me, and the way I work, it looks dang good.

I've saved a space on my desktop for the EZD2 icon just above the EZKeys icon. Now, no need for the space unless SD3 comes with a standalone launcher. With SD2 and many other VSTi's that have no standalone launcher, I use Gig Performer to run them standalone.

The best part is that I can spend the EZD2 money on the SD2 to SD3 upgrade!

When EZD2 came out I remember all the EZX packs had updates so the graphics were updated. The base drum kit was reworked into a new EZX pack. I expect the SDX's and the base SD2 packs to go through the same thing.

...
And now - "We're recording in not only surround but height" - wow.
...

One thing to consider is that the higher the frequency of a sound, the more it radiates up as it moves away from the sound source. This is why, for example, you stage a choir with the highest pitched voices lower, with successively lower pitched voices standing behind and above in ranks. Look at the micing of this choir. I would have used an ORTF pair centered and back, but that's just me. And I would have positioned the choir differently.

So why could this be useful in a drum mix? I think this would give you some control over the high frequency content (from the harmonics from the cymbals, for example) that never existed before.

Re: Superior Drummer 3 Teaser--I think?! 2017/08/18 14:27:20 (permalink)
My reasons for wanting SD3:

SD2 has drum trigger mappings for the major drum modules/triggers…Roland, Yamaha and others but those trigger mappings are generic to the company NOT to the specific model.  SD3 has trigger mapping presets specific to most models current AND past.  The specific Roland model I have is included…VERY COOL!

SD3 also includes the song creation functionality that was released with the EZD2 release from three years ago.  I was pissed that Toontrack didn’t offer the same thing for SD2…BUT, it’s in SD3.

Also, the included drum kits were mic’ed and recorded by George Massenburg In Galaxy Studios.  Massenburg…legendary  sound engineer.  The studio where the drums were recorded in is also a legendary studio in Belgium.

There’s also a drummer tracker in SD3.  It will allow you to take a drum recording from anywhere, analyze it, separate out the individual drums (kick, snare, toms..etc.) and replace those drum hits with hits from the SD3 library and other libraries.  I doubt I’ll use that much if at all…but it is awesome it’s included if I need it.

All of my SD2 kits, presets and MIDI will work with SD3…no wasted $$$.  Also, there will be FREE upgrades to the SD2 kits so that the graphics and interface will match SD3.  This is truly awesome.

The price of SD3 is $419.00, but, I get it for $200.00 because I already own SD2

Gotta get your 11.0 system out of your closet too. The program sounds awesome and unmatched though. For those that already have a zillion drum programs...this will hit the ones with severe GAS and then i suspect taper off pretty quickly.
Most will probably wait for the $99 upgrade deal down the road.

I will wait for a deal on upgrade.

My understanding is that it WILL use EZ2 Kits and MIDI, and
will have updated graphics for the kits, as well as new graphics
for the SDX's...and it does have a standalone that eliminates the need
for Toontrack Solo...

At last! Now I can use those extra nine speakers that have been gathering dust in the cupboard all these years.

Haha. I bought a bunch of speakers and amps from China about 7 years ago to start building my audio empire. Never sold a one and now I have more than enough to setup an 11.1 system. I knew there must be a reason.

Remember the days of Dolby cassettes? There'd be a little Dolby logo sticker on your store-bought cassettes to remind you to switch the feature on, and if you didn't have it, everything sounded overly bright and hissy.

Now you'll have to put a warning in your MP3 metadata: "Must have 12 speakers to play this file". Oh, wait. Mp3 can't do 11.1. OK, FLAC then. Oops, FLAC can't handle it either. I guess your distribution format will have to be 1GB+ wav files. No iTunes for you!

I'm glad I never sold my soul to Apple. How else could I listen to 1-bit 2.4MHz DSD files on a portable player?

DSD is a funny format (DSF/DXD etc.) as it is supposed to reduce the limitations of digital and sound more pleasant. If you can find any or happen to have SACD then it's an expensive way to listen to music.

Windows Media Audio had 5.1 surround at some stage however I don't know if anybody even bothers with that format now.

I have computer stuff.

One week to go to SD3. I was hoping there would be some SDX promo to go with the release. They haven't been making new Producer preset packs for a few years so I am hoping they will be included in the updated for SD3 SDX packs. Are there any new video's out there?

It's Bass, not Bass.
