Switching to Reaper
I've been using Sonar for probably about 15 years, since it was Cakewalk 3.0 on Windows 3.1, but I've finally made the switch to Reaper. The thing that really got me was that Sonar jumped to version 8 and abandoned fixing substantial bugs in 7, requiring me to pay if I wanted bugs fixed that affected me every time I was working. In addition, Sonar's interface keeps getting more clumsy. It feels like design decisions at Cakewalk are now made by programmers and the marketing department, not musicians or user experience experts. Reaper isn't perfect, and the video support is currently almost unusable so it's not good for post, but they claim that video will be working soon (and video support is pretty poor on Sonar anyway). But I'm finishing up my first commercial project in Reaper, and the user interface feel is great, it's faster and more stable than Sonar for me, and has already improved my workflow even though I'm still learning some stuff. In addition, it runs on Windows 32 and 64, Mac, and Linux, and it doesn't use copy protection! l8r cakewalk! ;o(

Good Luck Paul A lot of times I feel the same. And ask myself... damn... mabey I should of went Protools on a mac. However my problems arn't with sonar. My problems are me not having lacking computer skills/ know how and trying to PIMP my PC and figureing out this computer/software/ music quick, fast and in a hurry. After many many crashes/bsod/latency/dropouts/ext ext... I'm steadly slowley getting my PC somewhat more stable and smooth. Thanks to this forum....... I will say this... If it wasn't for the people here on this forum, I would have switched DAWs. a few months back. One day I'm goning to have Sonar performing rock solid. I guess Its always smart to go with the DAW that best works for you and your work flow.

Hope you'll report back after trying it awhile - I plan to give it a thorough test drive around the holidays - too busy now to switch or evaluate. Aside from all the cool routing, massive customization options, lower cpu usage, much better envelopes, and other pluses that are touted, what tempts me most is that development seems to be much more user-responsive than marketing driven. It also seems to progress at a lightening pace. MIDI seems to be a potential weak spot for now, but at the rate they fix things, might not be long until it meets or surpasses SONAR and the others. I'm also interested to see what they do with video. FWIW, I could care less about included VSTs or instruments in SONAR (or Reaper) - I use all 3rd party stuff anyway and don't see that changing. I'm having no major probs with SONAR. but I'm always looking for the something better, and the overall direction of SONAR seems to be moving differently than I want to go. Please let us know how it goes!

I'm a firm believer that everyone should use whatever they are comfortable with. If that's sonar, fine, if that's reaper, great! if that's garageband - go for it. but these threads about "I'm leaving sonar becaue..." just kind of get on my nerves. They're really nothing more than people wanting attention. I'd have more respect for someone if they just came out and said: these are the problems I find with sonar. and I don't even mind if they say that brand X does this better than sonar. but the drama of "I'm leaving" is just that...drama. leave the drama in high school.

I can imagine this Reaper eventually becoming this Super DAW. Being able to cap what every other does. I mean programs like Nuendo, which sells for over US $2000, to mention Sonar, Logic et all. It can run on any type of computer and any type of operating system. This is being given away for free, or pay only if one feels guilty enough. Why should anyone complain about wanting to use such a marvelous system with a marketing strategy not even good enough for true Socialism. Unless of course it succeeds in killing off every other DAW then it will Reap the benefits and charge a "million dollars" It bothers me to support this ploy.

Have fun with Reaper. I have Reaper 3.0. I would not say it's more or less fun than SONAR. I don't user Reaper, I use SOANR. On a side note, I do have fun taunting The Grim Reaper. Every day I wake up and say to TGR, "Hah, 24 more hours under my belt." I know, I know. It's dangerous, but that's how I roll.

simpleman This is being given away for free, or pay only if one feels guilty enough. Are you serious? Show me where it says on cockos' website that it's being given away for free. It is not free. It is shareware and costs $60 for personal use or $225 for commercial use. it has nothing to do with being free unless you feel guilty enough - that's asinine!

Didn't Cockos just upgrade from 2.xxx to 3.xxx? Where all the bugs fixed in 2.xxx? Just interested. I do confess to being confused as to why you are throwing x years of investment in Sonar for a product that you declare to be "not perfect". There again I know of no software product that is. Having said all this I do wish all the best with your decision and the future.

However I'm replying because you sound more like sour grapes than anything else. All software has bugs. But I've made a ton of music with Sonar (every version) and lived with the bugs like every other piece of software out there. And, while I do wish there was more attention to the bugs, I also am glad Sonar is as powerful and useful as it is. I've talked with so many people on this same subject. Everyone has their personal gripes and wishes. But most agree that the big software (of which Sonar is one) does a damn good job in general. SO fine ... move on to Reaper. I'm not such a fan of some of it's approaches, but I continue to review it as it develops. In the meantime I make music all the time in Sonar. If you had as much invested in Reaper as you seem to have with Sonar, and reach the point where you bump into its bugs, we'll see if you sing the praises so easily. And one other thing ... why is it people have such a need to come dump on the other guy, so to speak. If you moved on - then move on. WHy come here and trash the product many of us use and enjoy using. Go sing your praises on the Reaper Forums. And trash Sonar there if you must. I'm not a fanboy, but I am a solid supporter. I do mostly ITB projects and that puts a big strain on the computer (moreso than audio only etc); and sure I've run into bugs, but each time there was an acceptable workaround. Have fun, and think about the posts you put out here. Most of us try to help others work through their problems. It's harder to do when / if someone just comes to throw out their trash. Be well.

I actually downloaded it again just the other day, but haven't installed it yet. hehe at the rate of development on the Cockos site I should probably check in again to see if it's been updated already. Buy honestly ... out of all the DAWs I've tried Reaper is the one that gives me the most problems.

daveny5 << Why not be honest and admit its because you don't want to have to pay for Sonar? >> It's sad to think that serious DAW users would think that serious DAW users would make a decision like that based on price. Unfortunately, that seems to be the kind of user attitude and technical understanding, and inertia in loyalty drag, that CW's business seems increasingly dependent on, and that its (apparently) combined marketing and development efforts are geared towards. (Could this be a case CW listening to their customers too well?) I've been thinking about this. Switching applications is not a decision made lightly, especially when the application is central to what you do, and when what you do means something to you. I've done it only once before with a core application, when I switched from WordPerfect to Microsoft Word. I think that's why we see all these dramatic "I'm leaving" and "I'm switching" announcements. It's not always easy to actually make the switch, especially if you're attached to the product or the company or feel an attachment to the user community (even if that's based more on a certain shared experience than on running up an embarrassing post count.) The dramatic "I'm switching" announcement is part of the separation process. Like a rite of passage. Like if I make a public declaration, it means that I've really done it. Or at least that I kind of have to go through with it. Sort of like a weird variation of "stop me before I kill again." In other words, the drama reflects the trauma. I've never made such a post. But I think I understand the impulse.
