Love your piano playing,  to me it did get buried in the mix at times.
Great song writing,  :)

We don't have a tradition of this type of music in our churches in the UK, but if we did, I would love to listen to this one Janet. I think Dulcie's singing matches the song very well, she seems to grow in confidence throughout the song.

Lovely tune

Hi Janet :-) Sweet song and very nice vocals. Drums aren't too loud just too bright, and the vocals could use some compression, delay and reverb (and maybe volume?). When I mix I'll take a commercially recorded song that I want my mix too sound like and A/B with my mix process until I have a reasonably good "match" and of course fine tune it for it's own flavor as a final step.

Only listening on lappy, so take that into account. As it comes across on here, she seems like she is in a different room to the musicians, so could use some reverb to place her better in the mix. I also found myself wanting her to go higher on the fourth syllable of de-liv-er-ER has come. Maybe just me, but might be worth a try, maybe just at the end to add some variation.

Hey there from Martin & Nancy. Nice praise and worship song and theme being explored is a great truth that never gets old. Our God is a big God - we should 'write Him' that way. I have to go with Paulo - the singer does sound like she's in another room. Nancy noted that there's no bass presence and we both thought that the drums seemed very awkward, especially the hi-hat. There needs to be more warmth, via EQ balancing and reverb for sure. Guitar and piano played well and fits well together. Nancy and I just didn't take to the voice - maybe it's the recording/mixing context, but maybe it was a bit too focused on the upper register to sound entirely comfortable for the singer. Not saying she 'doesn't hit the notes', but when I think vocals I've done from years back on certain tunes, I cringe knowing that if I'd sung it down lower, it would have captured more warmth. Personally a scaled down, simplified version - piano, guitar voice might work better. Maybe drop the key 1 1/2 notches too and add some stereo spread via reverb, delay or stereo simulators. Best to you from us both! Martin & Nancy

Hi Janet,

Lovely to hear you doing the do again.

There's enough wisdom contained in the thread already, I agree with Mark that dropping the key a bit may help the singer and the congregation sing along.  It's a lovely tune and well put together, I'm not sure the drums are too loud or whether its because the melodic content is just seeming a bit buried.

The drums are nicely programmed for sure but a little more cohesion on the drum sounds is in order maybe treat the kit as a sub-mix on its own to make it a more unified entity and the bring the bass in to give some oomph (technical speak) to emphasise the rhythmic loveliness of that 6/8 feel.  Once you've got that working give the melodic stuff pride of place and work the vocals in as you go.

As I say though it's a lovely tune and it makes me want to join in even though my dulcet corncrake voice would be unlikely to get up there...

Great job so far.  And I know you'll nail this one in the end.

Hi Janet,
I'm glad you put this on soundclick , I couldn't get it to play on Reverberation .

your singer has a lovely voice with so much potential ,
I think finding what works with her voice and range will make things pretty exciting as the two of you work more together over time.
it is a nice change of pace to  hear  a triplet feel song
overall the song as presented sounds very promising .

I see that  a few folks with  a decent track record have offered feedback on your mix , most of it seems close to spot on .

all the best,

Kenny

Kinda' late getting onto this..  I'm on the road and only have laptop speakers to listen to so I could really be off base here.

I don't think that the drums are too loud, but I think that they overwhelm the song at points and get really carried away.  I think this is a case where less is more and you have way too much.  I don't think that the complex parts of the drum patterns add to the song.  At least, that is the effect I get on crummy built-in pezio 'speakers' on a laptop.  It may sound great on a good set of monitors.

It is really hard for me to be critical here.  You were at the top of my winter play list.

After a long, detailed answer, including the one that somehow didn't get posted a few days ago...the one I just took 1/2 hour to type didn't get posted either. :(   I don't have the heart to start over again right now.  For now please suffice it to say, thank you very, very much to every single one of you.  I have incorporated most of your ideas.  The new mix still needs some work, though, so I didn't bother posting a remix.  Hopefully between a couple of us we'll be able to get this one in shape.

Thanks once again...I'll be back.

Glen...you made my day. Thank you.

As usual I'm late to the party, but I'm glad I didn't miss this one.  Excellent song and well performed too all around.  After reading some of the mix comments, I don't think you need me for that... you've got some great advice there already.

I really enjoyed the song.  Great job by all.

I do not read any posts before I make my comments so if I'm doubling up, I apologize.

The singer is off pitch a bit too much. I'd Melodyne or V-vocal her. She's a good singer so you should not get too many artifacts.

The voice is too dry. Some subtle reverb would help IMO.

Bass needs some space. It's almost not there. EQ may help it. Maybe Danny could offer some advice.

Drums are too busy.

Re:The Deliverer Has Come 2012/04/04 19:43:14 (permalink)
OK, I'll try a real thank you again.  (and maybe save as I go).

Jan - thank you!
Jimmy S - Thank you!  What do you mean by PC2A?
Reece, thanks for the detailed ideas.
Rik, thank you!
S. Alf - thanks so much.  I took into account your ideas about the drums.  (haven't posted a new version yet though....still needs work.)
John, thanks very much!  Yeah, Dulcie said the top notes are just where her voice cracks, unfortunately.  Usually she can easily sing higher than this but hasn't practiced as much lately. She still beats me by a mile. Bob, thank you!
Gary, thanks so much.  The piano was inspired by Edwin Fawcett.  Mark played guitar for him and posted the song here awhile ago.  I love his style, so listened to it several times before playing this.  :)
Thanks Tim.  See the note to Gary about the piano playing. :)  And yes, it's buried.  Hopefully that will get sorted out before long.  :)
Thanks very much, Garry! Yes, I love to hear her sing.  :)
Thanks very much, Tony.  I tried your ideas on her track and that helped a lot.  Still working on the mix, so I won't bother posting every little change.
Paulo, thank you.  Thanks to you, I realized I had somehow turned off the reverb on the reverb bus.  :(  I think it's better now, although she still needs more reverb.  Should I put reverb on the vocal track AND the reverb bus?
Thanks very much for stopping by Martin (& Nancy).  Those ideas help a lot.  I really appreciate it.  I'll keep working on it!
Thanks Frank.  :) Yeah, I knew Herb would do great on this, as always.
Thank you, Mark and James and Kenny!  I appreciate your comments!
Thanks again Glen.  I'm workin' on those drums. :)
Thank you, Phil.  You're not late.  I haven't even posted a remix yet!  :)  Thanks so much for stopping by. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for stopping by, Ed.  Actually I Melodyned her voice for those places she was just a tiny bit off, so I'm not sure where she'd be off.  I'll listen again.  I worked on compressing the bass so hopefully that will take care of that too.  Not sure how to get the voice wetter....I'll try reverb on the track AND on the reverb bus.

4/14

OK, finally got reverb on the vocals.  Reece deserves another medal for helping me figure out the issue.  I'm not sure who to blame for my blondness this time, but I learned a few things once again.  Made a ton of changes, and probably not all the right ones, but, well, hopefully this is closer!

Ed, I Melodyned her voice once again, as you prompted me to listen a bit closer.  Thanks. :)

Everyone else, thanks so much for your help and patience.  I sure do hope this is better, but please tell me if it's not!

I'll try to catch up on listening too...when I saw I hadn't even turned on my DAW in 4 days, that confirmed that I really have been a little bit busier than I prefer.  (actually, a lot more, but I'll live.)

Well, don't take anything I say too seriously. I'm not as consistent as I thought I use to be due to some medical problems that won't go away anytime soon. I am not actually getting anything I am doing quite correct either, just perhaps good enough for the time I want to spend on it (I get tired also which interferes -  getting older).

So, in the end it is up to how you think it sounds in the end, but perhaps a bit more reverb on her vocal, otherwise I think it is better overall and sounds okay.  Oh, ya, also perhaps the bass guitar could be just a bit louder also but that also could be differences in speakers also. But sounds better overall.

Hi Janet, the link to the song still points to the old mix.  I can't hear any reverb on the vocal at all.  Maybe check that link or show us where to click.  Thanks.

Janet, this is definitely getting better each time I hear it.  I listened to the SC version, but I didn't hear the reverb on the vocal.  My only suggestion for this piece concerns the drums.  I think they're a little busy for this type of song.  It's not that they're too loud, but there are so many fills going on that it distracts a little from the vocal.  Other than that, you're on the right track.

All the best,

Yep! Ends up the same for me, even with the Thunderstorms last night trying to hear it on RN, instead of the new version on SC. I listened again to it today on SC thinking it did not sound much different on RN as it had sounded before when listening last night.
 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm................................................................
But the song is better now.

Hi Janet
Wonderful piece/performance!  Love the flow of the lyrics.  If I had to nit the mix.  The vocals are a bit dry to my liking and the piano does get lost at times.  This has to be one of my top favs from you.   KUDOS LADIES!

Much better now Janet. That Melodyne used on a good voice that is just a tad off is a miracle worker, yes?

Only crit now is the song is a vocal song and the piano and drums could both come down by 2db IMO.

Thanks Shad.  Nice to see you around again!

Thanks much, Mark.  Yeah, not everyone's sold on her voice.  I just don't know who else to commandeer to sing this.  And she's way better than I am.

Thanks for stopping by again, S.  Alf.  Sorry you feel bad so much.  That's a pain.  :(  More reverb?  I think I can do that.  Bass louder?  I can hear that, especially as the dynamics build. I'll have to look into that.  Thanks.

Thank you, Lynn!  Still not sure about the drums?  Well, I'm not either, although at this point, I'd probably go with even more busy.  lol  Since I'm not much of a drummer, 6/8 isn't my strong point...and SD 2 doesn't have too many choices in that time signature either.  But I'll consider your ideas.  Can't hear the reverb still?  Hmm....  I think I need an overhaul...

Thank you, Kev!  Alright already, I'll increase the reverb on the vocals!  :)   (sheesh...instrumentals are SO much easier....at least I screw them up in other ways!)  lol.  Piano's still lost?  Well, it's better than it was. :)  What a balancing act...I'll keep working on it.  Thanks again!

Thanks for stopping by again, Ed.  Yes, you were right! :)  Instruments still too loud?  Well, I've got me a little instrument bus now (with lots of changes), so I'll just make another instrument bus and turn IT down.  At least I hope that works.  :)  Thanks again!

Well thank you, Luke!  :)  Glad to see you again too!

Thank you, James.

The Reverbnation link should work now.  Man, am I the only one that thinks that site is hard to get around on?  I can't even log in without a bunch of messing around.  And I don't see any way to upload a new mix without just deleting the old one (with all the lyrics, etc.) and uploading a new song.  Anyone here know if that's the only way to do it?
