Nothing about that joke was a dig on catholics.  One could have easily replaced the characters with protestant terms and it would have worked.  The joke could have even used a school teacher and a principal or endless other variations of organizations with hierarchical structure. The joke contained nothing about actual beliefs or traditions.

I may not be "proper" but in the US a jackass is a male ass or donkey and a female is usually referred to as a jenny.
"jackass" takes the question of  what genre is that ass out of it...."jenny"....talking about Jennys' ass could ones proper ass kicked....or is that arse?

My wife is called Jenny and I find you talking about her backside offensive, not just for myself, but also on behalf of the Amish people, of which I am not one, but I hear they like donkeys and you shouldn't mention them in a thread about backsides. ;)

!!...I've been trying to think of someone I know called Jenny...to my defense I can't think of one!
Life was so much easier out in the fields of New Mexico just riding the animals around...really the
only time I cared which end was up...err...facing forward.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the whole concept of being "offended" is a load of crap. People claim they're "offended" for one reason only - so they can elevate themselves into a position of moral superiority and chastise someone else, which they thoroughly enjoy.

Sorry, I got it wrong. There's another reason why people get offended, and that's to cast themselves as a victim to enjoy all of the political currency it brings.

As I may have mentioned elsewhere, there's becoming an increasingly blurred line between "offending" and "blasphemy".

I'm RC and it didn't offend me. We Catholics are pretty laid back actually as lots of jokes get thrown our way. Same as lawyers and folks from Norfolk apparently.

It's not true that people only become offended to assume a position of moral superiority. And what is wrong with the word homosexual?

I thought it was funny.

No matter whether we believe in them or not, we have to be able to separate the teachings of Christ from the church. And I did not see that joke as an attack on the christian faith. Only making a bit of fun of the rigid hierarchy which incidentally, is all too human, and contradicts the teachings Christ in more ways than it follows it.

Honestly, I find it more offensive that there are still people to defend this vile and corrupted organization. It's like praising the mafia because they inject money in our economy and promised one's family security if he looks away.

Actually, that's bad-mouthing the mafia.

I had no idea that fairies was a slang term for homosexuals. I don't care much that Starise used it - my own brother whom I love with all my heart is gay and he calls himself much worst than that. (one would never guess seeing him and he could probably smash one's skull in if he wanted to, so I would advise not calling him "fairie" ;)

I guess we are also reading what we put into it - I can see how in view of the other active discussion about religion this may rub someone the wrong way. OTOH, that's interpretation. It would be just as easy for me to see a comment about "fairies" as anything but inoffensive when it comes from anyone who believes in a book which explicitly states that homosexuality is "detestable" and is still quoted everywhere where there is an anti-gay rallye.

Every time I see him I'm reminded of all the macho bravado inherent to our little metalheads culture, how tough we thought we were, especially compared to those "wussies" who were listening to synth music - which we looked down upon because it was so "gay"...

And there we were, listening to Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith non-stop, thinking how tough and masculine leather and spikes looked. lol

Ha ha, yeah, being an 80s child I remember getting much abuse from people for being one of those "wussies" who liked the "gay" bands you mention from people who's heores wore make-up, permed/dyed their long flowing hair and and wore spandex trousers and high heels. Really amused me that they could never see the irony in mocking the "girly" bands.

Thanks for the chuckles, everyone. I got the OP's joke because I've watched enough Rowan Atkinson movies to understand the terminology. Luckily, it did not reference "deacons", as I've never understood what those are.

The really sad thing is that Rob Halford deliberately chose not to come out publicly when he was Judas Priest (i.e. in his first stint with the band) for fear that his sexuality would be harmful to the image of the band, and subsequently to their marketability. He specifically mentioned in interviews that he didn't feel justified in potentially threatening his band mates' livelihoods, hence his decision to reveal his homosexuality during his solo career.

As it happens, I think most long-time Priest fans already knew he was gay, and moreover, couldn't care a jot.

I think, however, that his fears of the negative ramifications were justified, even in an industry which has a long history of not persecuting or boycotting its members solely on account of their sexuality.

What a joy it is nowadays to live in a completely different world, when, aside from those with a particular agenda to follow, the vast majority of folk don't so much as bat an eyelid when it comes to matters of another's sexual orientation. Even more so, that gay guys and gals no longer have to adopt the persona of a parody of their stereotypes to satisfy the expectations of others.

Live and let live.

I think we all  have at one time been offended, yourself included.Imagine someone close to you like a family member you really like and then imagine me making  innuendos and jokes about them in a way that seems to be derogatory. You can't tell me you wouldn't be offended and protective. Imagine me giving you the equivalent of spit in your face. If I started to clown about your girl friend or wife how would you feel? I don't think you would walk off laughing and thinking I was just having my fun. At the very least you would probably be having a few words with me and I would deserve it. As I see it, what you have said is no one else is allowed to ever be offended about anything, that is unless I step on your toes. In that case I guess you have a right to be offended.

I agree with Rain here that I see some corruption in the institution that is the Catholic faith, but I also see a lot of good well meaning people in that particular faith who would never hurt a flea. I think for me this all tied into the other discussion and since we hardly or seldom ever make fun of any religion here the timing to the other discussion was unavoidable. The whole idea of the joke and the attempted avoidance of the obvious slam to Catholics everywhere is also unavoidable. I don't care how many shovels you use to try and dig out of it.

To you so called Christians who see nothing wrong with it. What would your limit be here? How about we urinate on your pews would that do it for you? How about we reword your Biblical terms and make it all some kind of obscene joke?

At this point I'm done with much more comment on the issue. I would compare it to making a joke about obese people while sitting in front of one. Maybe one obese guy would laugh right back but maybe someone else who has been battling the condition for years might be offended.

The very idea that noone should ever be offended is absurd and doesn't work in the real world. The idea that I am told what should or should not offend me is also absurd. Thats sounds more like control to me than someone who is offended supposedly taking some kind of moral high ground, which I'll take the right to think that this is absurd. I'll get offended at whatever I want ;) and you won't tell me what that is. The herd mentality doesn't work on me.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I probably did.

For one thing, Catholicism is just a form of Christianity. For another, Christians get slammed for their beliefs on a daily basis, especially these days. If I got bent outta shape every time someone made a joke or remark about Christ, the Bible, etc., I'd be pissed all day, every day. You didn't care for the joke. Got it. Point made. Get over it.
