Starise, I will apologize for anything I said that caused any harsh feelings. I guess I just didn't see the joke as a slam against any particular group, because one could've substituted anyone in the joke and I still would've found it humorous. Obviously you didn't take it that way, and I should've just stayed out of it. I certainly never meant to "throw you under the bus" as a fellow believer. I hope there isn't any ill will between us.

Not surprised either.
When people decide to wear their personal thoughts and feelings on their sleeve
they should expect them to get brushed-up against.

I think there are many intelligent members here and they know when they post about
certain topics that they are "fishing".
Why? Simple...

The very weird part of it to me is the attraction.
It's been proven here many times that there is more interest in a controversial thread
than any other.

No fishing going on here Spacey, I don't even like fish.

I just tried to share a humorous story with some people I thought would appreciate the humour. Only one person made it "controversial".

Or maybe I was just mocking fish as a meal as a deliberate slam to religion ? ;)

As an atheist, I find it rather offensive that you'd assume that your joke could possibly be interpreted more like a slam to religion than to evolution. That shows very little respect for your fellow atheists - which probably makes sense, coming from someone who doesn't even like fish. :P

I also find it offensive that you did not even consider that you could offend people by posting this.

But I'd probably find it way more offensive if you'd considered it and posted it nonetheless.

That being said, I'd be even more offended if you'd assumed that I'd be offended.

You only option, as you see, is not to post anything.

But then again, I'd be offended because I'd be tempted to assume that you assume that I believe that my "offendability" has precedence over your right to post.

I don't know how you manage to be such an offensive character, no matter what you do or say. ;)

I'm offended that you assumed that I wasn't saying anything. How do you know that I don't have a speech impediment and just couldn't manage to get the words out ? Maybe I was just taking time to consider what I wanted to say so that I didn't offend anyone. For all you know I might have died and my last unknown action was my hand falling onto the return key. I could have been dead, but all you could think about was you, you , you. And you call yourself Christian ??

Actually, I avoid to. And considering my own "beliefs" or lack thereof, people could maybe consider it offensive that I use the name, I guess. One of the reasons I don't use it in its full form and/or modify the spelling. Seriously.

Yeah, I know that, I was just being "funny" - it is kind of ironic and I hear what you're saying, but by the same token I couldn't really take anyone seriously who could be offended by anyone using their own given name - that's just PC gone way too far. If you don't like the name yourself, then fair enough, but you shouldn't have to apologise for it.

Maybe we need a story that includes fish and a pastor?

So..............

A man went fishing and hadn't caught a thing in four hours, when all of a sudden the local pastor turned up, cast his rod into the stream and within half an hour his keep net was full. The man is getting quite pissed off at this so decides to ask the pastor how he does it. The pastor kindly tells him, "Well my son, go home tonight and rub your hand between your wife's legs, and then rub it in with all your worms and the smell will attract the fish."

The man thinks this is a good idea so he goes home and sees the wife standing by the stove cooking dinner, he goes up to her, sticks his hand up her skirt and starts rubbing away.

The wife giggles and says "Oh hello pastor, off fishing again?"

Yeah, I got that. :) Oh I don't bother much w/ offending people. It's more a matter of self-respect. Actually, back home in French Canada, Christian, though it is an obvious reference to Christ, is not the word that's used for, uh, christians - the word is "chrétiens".

Actually, there isn't much anything back home that isn't a reference to christianity, catholicism or saint. Half the streets are named after saints, the majority of the little towns are also named after saints, and, until very recently, pretty much everyone was baptized according to the catholic rites - unless they were from another denomination, which is pretty rare.

Here it's a different story though, and many find mine a "such a lovely name". Not that I mind. I just prefer to not use it. That's actually what I meant, that the christian reference bothered me.

And I must admit I never was particularly fond of it. In the years when I grow up, two successive very popular TV shows had outrageously gay characters named "Christian". Top that with the fact that my mother forced me to take dance lessons (a physical sense of rhythm's good for musicians she used to say - and as much as I hated it, knowing my Triple Swing from my Cha Cha from my Meringue indeed came in handy when I later started playing dance halls) and the fact that I was a solitary and on the skinny side and it's easy to imagine that I was an easy target for other kids to rip on for a while. Nothing out of the ordinary, mostly just poking, but annoying nonetheless.

LOL - That was social dance, not ballet. And I had the biggest crush on my little partner's mother.

Poking generally went away quickly. The fact that I changed schools a few times because we were moving meant that I had to start from scratch every time, though.

I owe a lot to my talent for drawing and to Derek Riggs for creating Eddie the Head, the Iron Maiden mascot. Drawing that creepy fellow on satchels and notebooks for them older tough kids earned me immunity. :)

I believe you Paulo. I also know that there are fishermen that know the bait and love the fight of the catch.
I really do think it's strange, as I mentioned in another post about how things along the same line seem to happen in many different places at or about the same time. So close anyway that it's "strange".

I saw it going down not only here in a few threads but all around me. I saw many peoples reactions and I hope it doesn't sound bad but I have no feelings about any of it. I guess there are things in life I'm dealing with that are much more important...to me.
My wife's retired so she substitutes and just yesterday came home telling me about a melt-down a
teacher had at school...along the same lines...just freaky...like something in the air...I don't know, probably never will. The bad thing for her was that she will never teach again in that state anyway and she will be dealing with a civil law suit. Things can sure go south in a heartbeat.
