The Spirit Moves
This is a mix of several musical styles and began with the opening mute guitar phrases. For awhile, it was the guitars, fretless bass, drums and organ. I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do with it and couldn't really decide on a lead instrument. Then I happened upon the root of the synth sound that makes up the lead in two parts of the song and started working on making that a fuller sound by layering elements together. Then the moog-like bass added something that melded the original african-style song with a more progressive rock sound. Needless to say, there were several iterations of the song and it ended up being bigger than I had planned You can listen here: https://dancumpian.bandcamp.com/track/the-spirit-moves or https://soundcloud.com/dcumpian/the-spirit-moves Hope you enjoy and any comments or suggestions are always welcome! A wonderfully happy mixture of percussive and melodic instruments! The clarity and balance of the mix is impressive. The arrangement is big, wide open and musically in bloom. As a musician I always make the same mistake of listening to the production first, and not the song itself. This time the song immediately grabbed my attention. The vibe is that strong. Well done sir, well done! Mark

I second what Mark said! This is a great example of how to use dynamics to make a song breathe, and I would refer those, who are dynamically challenged, to this song.

I really enjoyed this. You mentioned that it's a mix of several musical styles and I'll agree with that. The African kind of sound at the beginning reminded me a bit of Paul Simon and then around 2:50 I'm thinking of Vangelis. I wasn't too sure about that wah-wah sound in there though. I really liked the bass line which as you said helped tie things together. Very well done.

Actually, this mix is very clear both with and without headphones. You are doing somehing right when you can reach that point! 9 mixes! I can barely keep track of one! My work flow is way too archaic to do multiple mixes! Once mine start to sound bad, I tear it all down, remove all effects and start over. I really need to learn to use the mix snapshot feature.

Great feel/vibe in this track! It's eclectic for sure when listening to specific parts, yet overall it's still somehow unified. Not an easy thing to do. And do well. As others mentioned the mix is nice and open, wide and airy. But that seems to be your standard so not really unexpected.

Hi Dan, Wow ! your song came out fantastic I love all the themes and all the places the song goes . Love that Bass pocket you did around 2 and change … Very nice blend of sounds that I wouldn't expect to hear in the more traditional African sound … Great Mix too . on a side note , back East I played w a trad African Jazz band for outdoor concerts . When I moved out West I played with an Artist who did much of the music for The Lion King and The Color Purple ..( those projects were before my time w the Artist ) I happen to Love the Genre even though on my own I'm not setup to do it .. Great Job Kenny

Thanks again Mark! I think you misunderstood my comment; there were 9 mixes that I considered "final" and then I found something I didn't like (or thought I could do better) and would make adjustments to the mix. I do my own "mastering", if you will, so I have a mix setup and a master setup (in a separate project). This allows me to separate the processes, though it can complicate things when I'm still changing the mix, lol. Regards, Dan

dcumpian there were 9 mixes that I considered "final" and then I found something I didn't like (or thought I could do better) and would make adjustments to the mix.
I started naming my exports songname- final and then I add ha to the end because I know it's never the final. Every new final, I add another ha to the end. So the more finals I do, the funnier it gets. Also an easy way to track which one is the latest (has the most ha's). Anyway, +1 to the other comments, a really great track.
