Interesting. It's not often I disagree with Reece or Jimmy. I suppose the drums could be more comfortable, but on a concept level, they are spot on, imho. l guess it comes down to artistry, and what you want to convey.
After 15+ listens, I stand by my original thought on this.

then obviously you must be wrong.

the drums or lack thereof are a personal taste thing.  they don't convey a wall being hammered, IMO, they sound more like mortar shells.

but I do like this version better, Janet.

sorry bob.

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, this is up to a 2 now?  LOL

(I'm not sure he heard the new version, btw.)

No, Reece.  It's a secret.

So, Jimmy, do you think more reverb on the drums would help? And lowering the volume?

I could certainly do two versions, although I never envisioned the piano that way.  Just never thought of it.  I first 'heard' the drums, or whatever they are.  The rest sort of evolved.  I just knew it had to be minor.

And if my piano playing has advanced, it's partly because you showed me how.  So thank you once again. :-)   And thank you for listening and commenting.  I really appreciate it, especially since I know it's so hard for you to do anything these days.  You're a great friend, Jimmy!

So, Jimmy, do you think more reverb on the drums would help? And lowering the volume?

It probably would. You'd have to try it to see, but yes is my guess.

The thing is, is that from the "creative aspect" you've done something here
that is? Well? Very creative. I'd give that an A+ and I mean creative in a "cool way".
What it does is to take this toward a direction that gets perceived as it does,
such as a wall, barrier, setback, etc by its very nature of production. Which also
implies a bit of maybe sadness?

Of course there is a thin line between sadness and beauty and I don't even think
that I necessarily feel that way in listening to it this way. It's just that as a piano
only (or something less "jumping out at you") I'd be more relaxed from the
"listening" aspect.

but yes maybe some verb, less volume and maybe compression (or more of it)
might smooth it out some where it still might be more of the "goal" that your
going for and "accent" rather than be "to my ears" dominant.

Yes I am still weak but I'm trying to stay at it a little more. I never thought that
just even sitting and typing would drain me so much.

Re:The Wall 2011/02/01 23:34:19 (permalink)
Jimmy, I put a new mix up, but I forgot to add reverb to the drums.  I was mostly concerned about lowering the volume (and it's getting late and my head hurts bad.)  Perhaps that will take care of most of the problems.  If not, I'll work on the compression.  Although I never meant this to be a relaxing piece.  :-)

And when you're not feeling well, it's amazing how little it takes to drain you.   :(

Janet - it would work better (IMO) if you reduced the volume of most of those hits except for the intro.  (not just a little, but not taking them so far down as to be inaudible).

What Reece said (or how he said it) must have been the "key" because this now
sounds very "balanced". And the drum work takes on a more descriptive way about it
Maybe less volume is all that was needed. I can see how Robert likes that aspect
of what you did with the drums because they are very creative.

    well done Janet

I listened to this when you first put it up, but didn't comment. I reeeaalllly liked the piano - as you already know I'm a big fan of your darker pieces, but the drums just weren't doing it for me and I didn't want to make the "it's good except for the drums" comment again. Fortunately someone else did that for me now, so I don't feel so bad mentioning it. They sound so much better now. Only on lappy speakers at the mo, but they seem to sit well, 'cept for the one at 2:11 which still seems a bit loud on these speakers.

Thanks Jimmy.  I'm glad it's better. :-)

Grant:  sweet!  :-)

Thank you, Scott!

Thanks for waiting, Paulo. :-)  I was beginning to think that maybe Stormdrum is only going to be good for helping me start songs, then I'll have to delete 'em.  :-)  I obviously still need to work at using the program.  That one at 2:11 is an elusive one.  I muted the drum track to see what just the piano sounds like and there's still this crazy drum sound that isn't on the SD track.  I have no idea what it is, but Reece thinks it may be a reverb tail or something.  I'll have to look into it. Anyway, that's hopefully why that one's too loud.

I wish his skills would rub off on me.  But there's no dissonance on this one. :-)

I added a little viola now...you probably won't like it, Scott, so don't listen...

Bring them back up, at least most of the way? They sounded like artillery? But I thought it was cool. And they give a feel to the piece that's not there without them.

Well, I have to agree.
I suppose it depends on what you want this to be.
The first version was more cinematic, this one more songy, if that makes sense.
The artillery has been tamed (yes I think it's kind of wimpy, too)
The massive reverb on the piano has been tamed. That reverb realy brought the sense of despair and desolation forward. And the sadness.
This version is nice, but it doesn't have the gutwrenching drama to it. And it's warmer.
As a song, perhaps this is better. As movie material, it's kind of lost its teeth, and doesn't have the same effect.
Fwiw, I downloaded the first version before you had a chance to change it.
I like them both, but prefer the first for its dramatic edge.
Perhaps it's a matter of taste, and mine clearly runs darker than most.
I so wish I could capture videos of what I see when I listen to your songs.
You have a unique gift of presenting some very visual music.

The viola sounded okay, but it needed a couple of harmonies, as it is played too slow and somber for a single string to carry the weight. However; if you had added some lively runs in there, it would have been fine with just the single notes. It's okay, we're still friends.

Thanks James.  I wish they were all this easy to do. :-)

Thanks Bob.  I didn't realize that changing the damping on the piano took off so much reverb.  It should be easy to get that back with the reverb send.  And yeah, the drums will come back up.  Thanks.  :-)  I'm glad you 'see' things with my music.  I do too.  :-)

Scott, that's an interesting observation.  I obviously didn't want it to sound 'happy' but it would be easy to add harmonies.  Thanks. And I'm SO glad we're till friends. :-)

First impression, your best "piano and percussions" piece to date. Why? Vibe-wise, very effective. On a personal preference note, I would of made those drum hits (thunder) more unpredictable. The viola partition is a nice touch. I wouldn't change a thing aside some "thick-e-ning" tactic (double, triple it up as Ron would say). It's too thin as is. Btw, these are not nits... just thoughts as I'm listening. Bravo Janet!

Love this track. so much tension and energy IMO.   I so could see this playing on a movie battlefield, the hero's have suffered a bad setback etc.

Then when things start to turn around for them, bring in a powerhouse breakbeat (and maybe more strings) to turn up the energy.
