Right now I'm using the acoustic piano that cam with Komplete 5, which sounds pretty good, but I think not quite as good as ivory.

Plus since my wife is really the piano player, she usually doesn't give me a hard time about piano related purchases, unlike say regular synth's, lol.

Very cool Janet.  I thought the sound effects you had in there really added emotional content (to quote Bruce Lee) to the song.  Really paints a picture in the mind.

Re:The Wall, new mix 2/5 2011/02/05 18:02:43 (permalink)

That first "hit" has a "rattle" in it like a speaker rattling from a loose piece of
wood. It is in the "waveform" not the level of it. Lowering it's volume wont change
the "rattle". It is also one of (if not the) highest peaks in the song as far as level goes.
If I were to think about "wanting it there" or "chancing on it being an issue"
for the listener. I'd take it out or do something that didn't have that "rattle"

Looking at it from "a chance" point of view "not having it" wouldn't lesson the
chance of the song being good from a listener (or potential) "pitch" to a
person for use in say a film or whatever.

Where as "having" it there and say a producer or whoever "heard that" might
immediately be distracted in a way as to loose interest. I wouldn't chance that.

Maybe that isn't the perception that others have, or would have of it.
That's just mine.

Thanks Don. That's what I was going for. And good to see you again!  :-)

Thanks for those ideas, Jimmy and very good points, as always.  I think I've got that one tamed for now.  Now I hear an artifact or something going on...sorta like crickets. I hope it's just my system or something. Sounds fine on my DAW.

Re:The Wall, new mix 2/5 2011/02/05 19:21:31 (permalink)
It's really close, Janet, and I see what Jimmy is seeing.
Check this out:

Track 1 is the version you uploaded a few hours ago.
Track 2 is the one you just did.
Track 3 is the original version.
Note the wave is very clean in the original version.
Track 1 is majorly clipped.
Track 2 shows the clipped waveform reduced in volume.
It is already damaged.
To properly fix it, you will need to reduce the level in the source track, either with velocity or envelope, however you boosted it in the first place. Then export the project again.
This note is the first impression we get of the song, so you really want to get it right.
btw, no crickets here.

Re:The Wall, new mix 2/5 2011/02/05 19:27:21 (permalink)
Yes, track 1 is exactly what I was seeing just a few minutes ago when I was trying to tame that thing.  I had to take the velocity down to almost nothing before there was any noticable difference.  Then a hair farther down and it was gone.  Almost like no in-between.  So I nudged it down a bit(from the top), then used a volume envelope on it to get what you see in track 2.  Hmm...I wonder if I changed the compressor in Ozone in the meantime.  I can't remember now.  Could that be it?

So, in other words you're saying what I just uploaded isn't really great either and I need to try for the look of track 3?

Re:The Wall, new mix 2/5 2011/02/05 19:43:22 (permalink)
It's just that one hit. Yes, the wave should look like track 3, and you will most likely need to fix it at the source.
Hmm. I'm looking at the whole thing, and there is a section at 2:10 that appears to be possibly clipped as well. You may have changed the compressor settings, but it's just these two spots that look iffy.
OK, listening again, 2:10 sounds good, because there is plenty going on.
The first hit is just kind of naked and exposed, so it stands out.
Whatever is different there, bring it in line with the rest of it.
So close...so close.
edit: Also, as Jimmy noted, if nothing else, you could get rid of it altogether and still be ok.
Maybe fade in as the tail is diminishing?

Re:The Wall, new mix 2/5 2011/02/05 20:04:01 (permalink)
Wow, I've tried messing with several things on the compressor and on Ozone and I can't really get it to change.  I'm stumped.  (not that I'm that familiar with compressors, but I've tried several things.)  And I don't have any of the previous mixes.  I'm not sure really what else to do. Is it bad enough that I should just delete it?  (that would be sorta sad, since that hit is what inspired this whole piece.)  lol

OK, I just tried a whole different sound.  It still looks sorta clipped, but maybe it's better.  Not sure...

That works. it has a nice round sound to it.
Phew!
fwiw, I save every session as a new version. CWP and MIDI files are small, so it doesn't really eat up space on the hard drive. All versions reference the same audio files, so they are not duplicated.
At any rate, I think you have nailed this one. Pour yourself a glass of whatever beverage is appropriate, and celebrate!

Well, I often save different versions, but when this ended up being just more or less random drum hits, or on the beat or off the beat, I figured it would be easy to go back and change something back.  I never dreamed that first one would create such havoc.  Fortunately, there are lots of drums/guns to choose from.

Anyway, I'm glad this worked. Bob, you're a gem.  THANK YOU!  You pour yourself something too.  :-)

That's a very nice piece and a great piano performance.  I think it is well mixed.  The strings sound great and are mixed well.

Bit late to this party... I haven't been around much in the last few days but how did I manage to miss this??!!?!??!

Janet - this is fantastic. The piano playing is awesome, the drums/guns are just right. I've listened to it through 3 times and it sounds better each time. The strings are just right too - not too thick, just thin enough to fit the "frustrating yet emotive" side of the piece, and not too thin to sound plaintive and reedy.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Terry.

Thanks for stopping by, Geno.  I appreciate it and I'm glad you liked it. :-)

Thanks Ed!

Thank you, Terry.  :-)  As you can tell, it's rather easy to play.  Getting those guns to sit right was more of a hassle than I'd imagined, but it was rather a different piece for me, as you can imagine. :-)

Janet,

Very nice.  Piano is really good, like the strings.  On the fence with the drums.  I think in a movie the special effects guys would add that low end, explosive stuff later to match the video sequence.   It is very good though as is though.  Always thought it would be interesting to dabble in film music.

On a side note, I listened to your song, This Old Man .  Really great song.

Regards

Thanks Kev.  I didn't actually mean to imply you had to listen to this.  :-)  I just thought it was funny that we both posted something with similar themes.  Of course it's happened before... :-)

Thank you Mark!  Several of us went round and round about those drums/guns.  I know what you mean about the special effects guys would put their own effects in. But if I left them out of this it would sorta fall flat.  Anyway, it was fun to get out of the box for a change.  Glad you liked This Old Man.  Thanks for listening!

i've played a whole motion picture inside my head listening to your work Janet. It's very nice. I'd play a little bit more with the reverb on the strings though. From almost no reverb to lots of it. You see as I pictured it in my mind, I heard the piano telling a story, the story of soldiers going to battle and never coming back. I imagined the strings being the soldiers, their thoughts, their fears, their emotions. So by adding more and more reverb, it would be like those soldiers disappearing into the abyss of war.

p.s sorry about that. my mind plays tricks like this all the time. i tend to get emotional with music!

Thank you, Ioannis. And no need to apologize. :-)  I like it when people hear stories in my pieces.  I'm not sure what you mean about playing with the reverb on the strings, since this is only 'drums' from Stormdrum and piano. Maybe you're meaning the drums?  If so, that's a good idea.  Thanks! :-)

Got to say Janet, this is definitely my favourite bit of music from you.
So heartfelt and emotive throughout.

Beautiful playing of the keys there.
The sound effects were a little unexpected, but i felt they were needed.

Lovely stuff indeed.
