Come to North Carolina..... we have a myriad of colorful local accents from the "high tiders" down east on the barrier islands to the Scottish accents in the mountains, and everything in between including the Ebonics at the local fast food joints spoken by the cashiers. And theoretically, it's all based on English.... but good luck having a conversation with some of those folks.

Jonbouy Now... I will concede the Zee problem... but "programme"? "Colour"? Are we French... or are we English? The English officially became French in 1066 but we turned the invaders English after they spent too much time with us. Therefore the true English language is actually to a good extent Franglais. In fact we insidiously anglicised our conquerors to such an extent they completely forgot we were a colony of theirs already and made several plans to 'invade' us again during the ensuing centuries. LOL - I think I did what they call a chortle at that . What's even funnier is its actually true.

daryl1968 I would thoroughly recommend a book called 'Made in America: an informal history of the English Language' by Bill Bryson. A lot of the words that us limeys think of as yank words (trash, fall (as in autumn), faucet, diaper, candy etc etc etc) originated in England and have been kept in the Amercan English language while UK English has developed and lost some of these words. Also, the puritan movement replaced the word 'Cock' or 'Cockerel' with the word Rooster and Toilet, Loo, Bog and the millions of crapper based words with 'Bathroom' (this one always baffles me as most american sh1thouses don't have a bath in them). The book's a great read. It is interesting. Canada is a Bilingual country. English and French. But the French spoken in Canada is actually considered "archaic" by modern France standards. It basically has not much evolved from the way it was spoken in the 1600's here (which may explain why many people from France consider us "quaint"). Mayhaps it is the same withe English hereth?

Bapu is particularly adept at butchering the language when he wants to--which is most of the time. I'm not sure about Newcastle, though. If you're looking for media that will help you learn English, I imagine there are websites that will do that. I suppose that your ultimate goal will dictate how you proceed. If you're looking to fit in with your area watch your local news and talk shows to get the local dialect. If you're trying to improve your proper English, you might want watch and listen the national news shows.

I would have to say that the USA pretty much owns the English language, seeing that the "colonies" defeated the great British empire in a war. So we can do what we want with it. There may be other countries out there that may speak a version English, but none of them actually defeated Great Britain. Australia? They were exiled. NZ? They evolved their independence. Canada? One half speaks French anyways. Besides without the US, they wouldn't exist. India? Have you called tech support lately, thats not English anyvay. Newcastle? All you need to know is pint or treble.

Gotta love an American 'historian', you still haven't finished the fight you had with yourselves during the mid-nineteenth century. The idealogical divide is still pretty much the same as it ever was... You'll also note that the American 'victory' over the English was actually down to the unwillingness to commit to the defence of our tea interests in America in the light of forces looking likely to be needed to defend against a threat from the French at home. You'll also recognize, if you ever did any homework that the French navy also played the MAJOR part in what you call your 'victory'. It's largely the French you should be raising a toast to on July 4th. I'm sure you already knew that though given your intensely deep interest and knowledge of the subject... The actual declaration was signed in France with a condition that we could keep our morphine interests in Asia. Basically you got sold out for a bag of smack...lol.
