How would you know what you didn't want until you actually used it, tried it out and THEN decided if you want it or not ?? Buying a "lite" version, you wouldn't know what you're missing or what could have been.....

See, for me, I originally purchased STUDIO since I really didn't want all the freebie VSTs... I already have my own tool box of VSTs, so STUDIO worked for me.

Then, one day a few years ago, CAKE had an upgrade special to PRODUCER for real cheap so I took the plunge. Now, I have been the producer user and have all the goodies that come with PRODUCER.  My problem was, I already owned FULL MELODYNE, TH2, AD and pretty much the rest of the 3rd Party goodies thrown in except the NOMAD Plugins (some of which I do like).

Long story to say that I am happy with the pricing/levels that SONAR offers and I contemplating moving back down to STUDIO when we X4 if the upgrade is less than upgrading to PRODUCER again.

I have no complaints about CAKE's marketing of SONAR.  I think they did a wonderful job in modernizing their DAW with the X series.

I wouldn't make any buying decisions on Sonar X4 until after you know what they have come up with and you see the actual list of improvements...It's my understanding that development is in full swing, and you might be surprised at what the future holds. I'm perfectly happy with X3, but then again I was happy with X2 and X1... each new version brings cool new stuff to the table and makes it worthwhile to upgrade.

I am not making any decisions on X4, if i gonna buy that, they have to come with
something special. that will bring sonar quite a big huge leap forward, in many ways.

X1 was great, still have the Boxed version in my shelf, standing there and collecting dust

X2 was a disaster ... ( deleted the files ) , but they remain for download on CW store.

X3 is great like X1, but with comping, melodyne, Prochannel ( X1 studio did not have that )
that was the reason i upgraded to X3
So far it has been a pleasure to use and i am quite satisfied with it.

Sonar X4 will come with a free hovercraft, so I'll definitely upgrade.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

The OP seems ver satisfied with X3 . He just wants cakewalk to offer a lesser version of their flagship product.

My apologies if this has already been stated.

Sonar is customizable as far as install are concerned. It's called "custom install". There is an option for it.

What he said :)
Sonar owner since 2011,all good...X3E Really Good,Thanks Cakewalk....now if I could just work out my internet "upload" problems-New Router? ADSL.

Sorry different topic, but soundcloud, seems to not let me "replace file" on certain songs, very strange.
Again Sonar X3 all very good!

What I suggested and still think would be a good idea is Sonar Producer Lite UPGRADE. It would only be for existing Producer customers so they could keep the core program current (without losing their Producer owner status) and retain/use the plugins they already got with previous version.

I guess that this would be very similar to the trial version, which includes hardly any plugins.

It would also be useful for VST developers to test their products and verify that they work properly in Sonar and to troubleshoot problems reported by Sonar users. Maybe Cakewalk ought to supply it to them for free. Or maybe they already do.

There is alot that comes in Sonar X3 that I do not use on a regular basis, but my approach has always been to not limit myself. I will try things that I do not use all the time, just to see if it will make a difference. One example would be the E-piano that is in the SI bundle. I think that sounds great. But I tried Lounge Lizard and really liked some of the tones that it brings to the table. So my point is, even if you don't use it try something different that comes with Sonar, and be a bit experimental with your sound. Why limit yourself to just a few core pieces. Live a little and try something different with your mixes. You have it, might as well use it.

cakewalk does not need to support this at all...  tbh in the scheme of things a custom minimal install of Sonar is a small download in the world of todays music stuff... try updating NI Komplete... its an all day affair.
