To be very clear...I only played the lead guitar the rest was a backing track.
This is the only cover song I've ever recorded, but I just wanted to play this song one day. It's one of my all time Santana favs. (now let's see if I get busted.)

Cakewalk, Harrison Mixbus 4, Waveform 9, ADK intel i7 2600 3.40 ghz, 8gb Ram, Win 7, Presonus Audiobox 44VSL.

Have you tried to download forked files in the desktop bandlab editor? I couldn't get the play button to work. I loaded some fork files (stems) into splat but the tracks didn't sync. The editor seems to work on my phone... The downloaded fork files were 16/48k. It's probably some hardware/software incompatibility but I was hoping for dragging, dropping or loading files between the desktop bandlab editor and splat. I sent a message to bandlab as there isn't much available info on troubleshooting.

AFAIK these are original songs or musical ideas the composer allows to be 'forked' or modified by others while still getting credit for their contribution. The purpose is to allow collaborating, or sharing of musical ideas - not merely posting songs. The decision is entirely up to the composer whether he or she wishes to allow their material to forked. I was not referring to Clint's song but another song in which I could't get bandlab's interface to work.

Bummer, Bandlab doesn't like Edge web browser and wants me to use Chrome which I find to be extremely annoying because it keeps trying to be my default browser and that trashes my network.

Unfortunately we're pushing the boundaries on browser technology and Chrome is the most advanced at the moment. :-(

We do test in Firefox and Edge, but Chrome remains the leader right now. Good thing you have SONAR ;-)

i do a lot of browser-related development, i wonder what chrome has over firefox here? and wouold this mean chrome has to be installed for the daw-related stuff to work (versus web-based stuff)

also while you're here, meng, is there a more detailed "tech spec" for the link analog device? (compatible phones, supported sample rates, usb 1 2 or 3? etc?) the website is a bit light

Thanks Meng, yes it's a very good thing I have SONAR and excellent thing you're keeping it alive. :o)
I will most certainly be checking in frequently about Edge support and will happily be contributing and kicking out the jams on Bandlab.

Edge is now actually the default browser on my Samsung Android smartphone because it integrates well between my Windows 10 computers and Samsung Smart TV. Whether I'm in the house or anywhere where I have 4G Internet service.

Bandlab works well in both Opera and Yandex, whom both borrow technology from Chrome. Had some initial problems with e-mail verification, but support rapidly got things working for me.

This is actually not true.  You do not have to ask anyone to do a cover.  You just need to purchase a license to do it.  Nobody "approves" or "disapproves" except your own wallet.  It's not even that expensive.

http://www.easysonglicensing.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiAoNTUBRBUEiwAWje2lotL8_h_Ge-5hQBg6BnDR5coQgAIEyNzYgyVQiVMrql4ob5pLxNvjBoCgI4QAvD_BwE

I've purchased several licenses to do covers on my albums.  Do note that there is a separate license required for each of these uses:

Cover a song on an a physical release (CD / Vinyl, however you release it in a PHYSICAL form or a secure non-streaming download from a site such as Amazon)
Cover a song for streaming (Uploading it to a streaming site, making available on Spotify, etc.)
Cover a song in a video broadcast  (Posting a YouTube video of your song, for example)

So, in other words, if you were to cover a song and release it on your CD, which is also released as an MP3 album on Amazon, as well as make it available online for streaming on Spotify / Pandora, etc., and you decide to do a music video for it, that will be 3 separate licenses you need.

If you cover a song and release a CD, Vinyl or download, then you must pay for each copy a percentage to the song- and textwriters! Also for other performances such as broadcasting there are fees for each time it runs, so there is not (only) a single payment (like a license)!

Not entirely true.  You buy the license from the link I provided, and you also buy the royalty payments along with it.  They recommend buying in blocks of 100 at a time for indie artist.  You do have to keep track of what you sell, and make sure you "true up" if you sell more than you purchased.  If your sales are higher, than buy in a block of 1000.  It's about $35-$45 per 100 depending on the length of the song.  Again, all the info you need is in the link I provided.  It works out to be about 3 cents a play / purchase.

Yes, you can see stuff but I found some things didn't work, e.g. that any comments I wrote wouldn't 'take', I had to switch to Chrome - annoying as I uninstalled it a few months ago as my own little protest about their general ethos.

Bandlab responded and said I could post a cover. I'm not sure how it works if your not selling the song and it's not available for download.
Either way I deleted it. Like I said...It's the only cover I've ever recorded, and it was really just for me. I wouldn't ever try to rip anyone off.

This is actually not true.  You do not have to ask anyone to do a cover.  You just need to purchase a license to do it.  Nobody "approves" or "disapproves" except your own wallet.

There's some confusion regarding this, not just in this thread but everywhere. It depends on the territories to start with.
But mostly, if you change the original arrangement you're supposed to get the authorisation of the original publisher.
Pink Floyd can refuse and obscure Balkan wedding band to record and commercialize a weird polka version of "Great Gig In The Sky, for artistic reasons.

This was one of the complains of Sir Macca not having the publishing of his tracks and losing it in the hands of Michael Jacko. It was Michael the one who could say a word to prevent, say, Trump to make a cover of "She Loves You" or "Give Peace a Chance". I Michael says yes, Paul and Yoko can't do nothing.

Honestly nobody cares about this, as the publisher gets the lion's share of your release's PRO an mechanical rights, so they wont sue you . But there are some picky artists that want to prevent others to "bastardize" their work. And there' s the David Getta where somebody released a cover of his track next day from the official release and people got confused and the cover sold almost as much as the original in the first week (IIRC)

Most of the times though, midiboy is right and as long as you clear a license everybody's happy.

But it did happen to me that I tried to purchase a license for an old WarnerChappel song and Harry Fox answered that they couldn't get the authorisation from the publisher. But that was decades ago...

Great input Midiboy, Easysonglicensing.com is a very reasonably priced service considering all the work needed to do all this stuff, it's dirt cheap.
It's true, let the pros license your covers to make sure everyone gets paid, and everyone stays happy making money
CD Baby distribution services is also a very thorough and inexpensive way to go. Huge bang for the buck starting at well under $1000 for complete worldwide Internet streaming and retail ready distribution packages for iTunes, Amazon, etc., etc download services, plus a few hundred CD's and a 100 or so download cards to sell at your local venues and or Amazon, Ebay, etc, what ever you choose.
CD baby will also keep track and pay licensing fees for cover tunes directly to the artist's PRO Agencies for a one time set up fee of $10 per copyright holder. Or you can skip that and keep track yourself and keep topping off at Easysonglicensing.com.

But first, you'll need some music to put on your album, covers or not, and THIS is where joining websites like Bandlab can be essential for not only creating the music for you next album, but for exponentially expanding your music catalog with network of like minded studio musicians, worldwide exposer, and fan base all at the same time. [image]file:///C:/Users/Delirium/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_image001.gif[/image]
You don't need to worry about what Bandlab does with your wonderful music, you only need to worry about what YOU do with your wonderful music, and hiding it away in a closet so nobody can steel it from you is NOT gonna get you paid.

I have personally found jamming and collaborating and creating bands over the Internet over the past 18+ years infinitely easier, more productive and rewarding then working locally with guys in the same room.
Arguments and bad attitudes are sorted out settled within an email or two, and if one member is consistently late and has consistent excuses for not doing as promised, no more problems once their tracks are deleted and blocked from your email account.

I’ve achieved things collaborating over the Internet that could never possibly be achieved by working in the same studio at the same time with a large group of guys and in such a short amount of time.
For instance, back in 2002 on ACIDplanet a group of 30 or so artist friends and I calling ourselves the "AP Collaboration Society" released a complete 4 act  “Rock Opera”  called “Timmy the Headless Boy” for Christmas 2002 which was recorded and performed within a 2 week time span.
It was done for an experiment just to see if we could do it, and for the fun of seeing 30+ artists/peers all compressed into the top 4 all genre slots on ACIDplanet.
The above link is not the original release, it is a 4 part .mp3 copy of the remixed and mastered CD version.
Everyone involved received a Redbook CD Master file created by me with Sony CD Architect and 10 CD-r copies with artwork in jewel cases to do with as they pleased.
And they were all very pleased and raved about how they couldn’t believe how great it sounded and many headed to the Cakewalk Store and purchased SONAR, and ran into the brick wall learning curve of switching DAW’s and got quickly frustrated.
And so that’s when I started making money giving online audio/MIDI engineering courses.
I didn’t write or wing the courses, I just pasted on what I learned from studying and sticking to the Curriculum of the Berklee School of Music Home study courses for digital recording and mixing with Pro Tools, and applied them to my personal favorite and much more power and VERY much less expensive DAW a.k.a. SONAR.
I explained how ACID Pro was much better and more reliable at capturing audio than SONAR was for “recording” sessions. ( In 2002 it certainly was.) But ACID Pro really sucks for mixing because every time you record it adds another track and you can easily end up with 100 tracks that need to be sorted and assigned to a buss for each instrument part. Like as in 30 tracks for one drum track constructed of loops, maybe 16 tracks for one guitar track or one vocal track, because if you make a mistake you cannot “punch in” to a pre recorded track. ACID is really designed for loop based music creation, and running one loop per track.
If you think it “reads” confusing, it will confuse your confusion looking at ACID’s GUI
But once you sort out those 50 to 100 track and slim them down 8 to 16 busses, you need to export the busses to separate .wav files to mix in SONAR, because ACID is RED LINING in processing power and computer resources.
And SONAR can kill it for fine tuning “MIXING” sessions, and judicial use of a few choice Waves plugins in the right places for the right job just glues the mix all together, and when you get the mix sounding like you can’t possibly make it sound any better……
Mix it down to a stereo .wav file and ignore it for about a week….. Than open it in Sound Forge for a “Mastering” session.
Sound Forge has some really, really good mastering plugins. But I still couldn’t resist trying at least a  final A/B comparison with iZotope Ozone “touch up” before deciding which is better.
I have personally sold 100's of copies, rumors have it that somewhere between 30k to 40k have been sold. All of which were sold as unregistered bootlegs because none of us knew how to do or really cared about all the legal stuff.  Or even believed we could make any money making music. LoL.

I have a good and warm and fuzzy feeling the same type of thing is happening or about to happen on Bandlab..
BTW.. Bootlegging your own CD is SERIOUSLY cutting yourself short of real success. It’s also tax evasion which is illegal and carries the same penalties as bootlegging someone else’s work.

“Rock Opera”  called “Timmy the Headless Boy”   will only stream with Edge or Internet Explorer browsers from Windows Media Player.

Hmm, please correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I see and understand what Bandlab is all about so far with such limited access and ability to upload projects with Edge browser is centered around making new music by collaborating with other like minded artists as opposed to seeking new fans and approval by uploading and promoting finished songs?
I know, as a singer/songwriter myself, I never know when a song is finished. I can usually get a hint when I keep adding tracks and adding tracks my songs turn into mud. And that's when I put down my guitar and walk away from my MIDI keyboard(s), take a breath and put on my producer's cap, go into comp mode and start removing anything that not needed.
Why? Because one of my favorite artists and greatest influences of all times, "Frank Zappa" once said in an interview; "There's nothing more beautiful that a simple song." just kind of hit me in the head like a 900 lbs. epiphany because to the average listener, Zappa's work sounds kind of complicated.
But to trained ears, Zappa's music is comprised of very simple scales, played by many musicians and many instruments, featured in all the right places.

From what I've heard so far listening to songs from the links directing me to songs posted in this very forum these songs are done cooking, and they are already good work that needs no further seasoning.
Only thing I can hear that they would or could need would be final mixing and mastering to give them a little more clarity, dynamic punch, and or sparkle.
Will they sound BETTER? That would be a matter that's up to the opinion of the listener.
The only thing I could guarantee is that you will hear a difference.
Jamming and adding anything else to them, like collaborative ideas would fall into the over production department.
Taking the less is more approach to remove the little things and parts not really needed to make the songs less busy is typically considered offensive in my experience.
And if anyone here would like me to perform these services please contact me and join my network at Steve  Schreiber at LinkedIn and we can discuss a game plan in depth, with very reasonable rates.

Or not, anywhoo, anyone seeking approval and exposer with finished songs should be posting on websites like BandCAMP.com where you can upload songs and entire album, charge what you want for it, and they also set up a "Tip Jar" for you where listeners can give you their approval with MONEY after streaming you tunes.
Also Reverbnation is great for exposer and a great place to be exposed to radio stations and other industry professionals.

Anywhoo, as another one of my favorite artists and greatest influences once said, who goes by the name of Quincy Jones; "The only place you'll find success before work is in the dictionary. But that's only because of alphabetical order."

just the "getting started" video, when a beard nice guy trashes an ukulele just for the sake of it made me sick....
it's a music website, show some respect for the music making instruments for heaven's sake ! ! !
Wish I could add a smiley or "lol" now but I can't, sorry.
You won't put a guy trashing a cell phone, would you Meng? Or a laptop?

Anyway, the site looks promising, been in Acid Planet, I am on Soundcloud all the time and definitely can see the point of a platform like this for young , post FL, post GarageBAnd kids.

It feel more "modern" and actual .
Looking forward.
Guess they'll expand they target from those kids creating snapshot track and collaborations on the fly on their phones to more serious musicians with a flagship, desktop DAW. So you can start on the App, trashing ukuleles and building beats and then get older, buy a new Uke, and expand your creativity on the DAW.
So far so good.

Great post dede.
I have a video clip of my ex girlfriend's puppy squatting over the keyboard and peeing on my one month old RAIN power laptop loaded with SONAR 6 PE that made me vomit for real.
I was shoot a video tutorial on how to mic an acoustic guitar and she thought it would be a cute background shot to place her adorable new puppy on the desk behind me while making recording the video.
When I turned around and saw what was going on my first thought was to kill the puppy and make her eat it raw while it was still warm.
But I didn't, I just stopped SONAR recording and turned the Rain upside down to let the urine drain out, and threw both her and the puppy the FAQ outta my house 4 eva..

Miraculously everything survived, including the laptop, as well as a close up cropped video edit in .AVI format of the little puppy squatting and peeing on the keyboard with such a cute and precious look on it's face.

You can't stage events like this. Does art mimic life, or does life define art?
How is that something that makes us angry one day, makes us laugh the next?
Ah yeah, well, where would we be without a sense of humor?
I for one would most likely be in jail... ;-p

And that video clip is included in about a half dozen video collaborations at the very least posted on the now dying ACIDplanet.
