Under the knife

Big day for me today. I've been counting down to this day like a kid waiting for Christmas, because today I'm going to pay a man to stab me in the back. More accurately, to slice open my back and carve away a small portion of my spine. And in doing so, finally bring my year-long torment of pain to an end. Well, in 4-6 weeks anyway. I'll know if they've killed or crippled me in a few hours...will report.

Please, do not say "good luck". That's what they say at the casino, and it never works.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

How will you know if they've killed you?  And how will you report the fact?

Wishing you the best and I'm hopeful it will be one of those scenarios where after the therapy you feel like you just had a big win at the casino.

I was gonna say the thing you said not to say so I'll wish you a speedy recovery instead. I almost had it done but they gave me 50/50 odds it might work and a high likelihood of recurrence within two years. Many people who get the snip have a recurrence so listen to your physiotherapist. After you are healed up strengthen up those tummy muscles to take the strain off the back muscles (as a species our backs are weak because we weren't originally designed to walk upright). It's been over two years since it nailed me and after doing my physio stretches/exercises for many hours every night I can finally hobble around my apartment on my good days. This was my second major blowout though and I have other factors that have made healing much harder. Like I said listen to your physiotherapist and stay vigilant with the exercises. You might just end up stronger than you were before. Take a look at all the chairs you use for long stretches (like in front of the DAW) and replace them with more back friendly ones. Sitting for hours on end in a bad chair is one of the worst things for herniated discs.

 Best wishes thoughts and prayers.

Back surgery is one of those things that seems scary (especially when it's your back) but those procedures have been refined and repeated so many times that the likely hood of anything seriously bad happening as a result is very slim. Still...if it were my back I would be concerned. If you found a good reputable doctor then you have most of the concern out of the way.

I believe you'll be back here soon commenting on how well it all went and how much better you feel. Please keep us updated. With any surgery like that it might take awhile to heal but soon after all is better.
