FWIW Cato... All of the tunes that I have either mixed or remixed (to be found in the Songs forum), have all been with Sonar 3.

That said..... It really should not matter what software you use. Just learn to do the best you can with what you have at the moment. Take what you have learned from the links and experiment, experiment, experiment.

Happy learning!

what would be really nice would be a place were people could post "presets" for a variety of the common eq, reverb, etc... tools. I know have built up my collection of "standard" settings that I use for each instrument - compression, eq, delay, reverb, etc... and it would be good to find a place to put those as well as get some others... eventually having a site with a couple thousand presets covering many products like the Sonitus, or Timeworks or SoundForge tools... just an idea...

Never had a problem with the link before now. They may have changed things since I originally posted it. I am checking on it now and will edit the link if possible. That is a good article too. I would hate to lose that one.

Thanks for the heads up.

Here's another great link for eq tips - the Magic Frequencies excerpt from the Mixing Engineer's Handbook:

http://www.digitalprosound.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/mixing_excerpt1.htm

This article is a good indicator of whether it would be good to invest in the whole book.

Chaz,

Take it from one of the newbies on this forum, this is of such a great value that you should have some kind of medal or something.

I hereby declare you Sir Chaz, and all the newbies in this forum will have to bow to you!

Thanks for being such a great help on this forum, I really hope that Cakewalk/Sonar/Twelve Tone/Roland appreciate you and all the help you provide here.

Cheers

Dipping Sauce

Hey Chaz...

this has a pw lock on it...has it always ??

i have it. i won't reproduce it exactly, but the important stuff is:

bass
reduce fundamentals at 40hz (q 1.4)
reduce resonance at 100hz (q 1.4)

acoustic guitar (and i would assume clean electric as well?)
reduce fundamentals at 100hz (q 1.0)
reduce resonance at 800hz (q 1.4)

male vocals
reduce fundamentals at 100hz (q 1.4)
reduce resonance at 7000-8200hz (q 5.6)

female vocals
reduce fundamentals at 150hz (q 1.4)
reduce resonance at 7000-8200hz (q 5.6)

kick drum
reduce resonance at 400hz (q 0.7)

cymbals
reduce room ambiance at 400hz (q 0.7)

acoustic piano
reduce resonance at 400hz (q 1.0)

background vocals
reduce presence at 3000hz (q 1.4)

these are common reductions but you must play with them to find the best fit. reducing fundamentals allows the rest of the instrument to cut through the mix, while reducing resonance makes the instrument sound less cheap.

hope that helps without getting the recording engineers quarterly mad at me. =) also, if it's not illegal or something (which it probably is) i can post this where everyone can get to it.

Thank you everyone for the extra links, kind wordss, etc.

FWIW..... "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski is a great book and one I have read numerous times. It is one that I both own and recommend highly to everyone. Another great book to go along with it is "The Art of Mixing" by David Gibson.

Telecaster..... I am only a man, so you can stop bowing!

Jack.... Thanks for taking the time to post the jist of The Dipping Sauce fro everyone to reference. I was going to do this, but time has not allowed me to do so. Again... Thanks.

You mean you did not print it off?!

I recently heard that the EQ Primer is only accessible by password. I will see what I can do to make a copy of the Primer available for download. Give me a few days though, because we are trying to finish up a fairly involved mix project at the time.

No, I had it bookmarked. I really should have printed it off.

If you could do that for me, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks a lot. :)
