I just added a new link dealing with Understanding Reverb. It is a must read if you are just getting started or are at an Intermediate level of mixing.

Chaz,

I can't thank you enough for posting this info. It came at a time when, after much trial and error (much, much error), some things were just starting to make sense to me. And now, with the knowledge that I've gotten from just a couple of the links you provided, my first mix, which I started working on, believe it or not, 2 years ago, is being radically transformed. At some point, I'll post two versions of this song, so you can see what I mean. I've got miles and miles to go, but I've stopped thinking that I will have to turn all of my tracks over to someone else to mix. Thanks again.

God bless,
Dave

Thanks guys. Just make good use of the things mentioned and print out things like the EQ Primer and set it close to your mixing area. It will come in very handy at times.

A good monitoring system really help too. I have my headphones sussed to the point that I can almost feel thier bias and eq accordingly. Still, Id rather play than produce and it shows.
I just saved a lot of the pages you linked so I have some reading to do. I know sonar has a post effect graphic eq which I should find as a real time effect plug in. I am pretty slick with them so this may solve my problem.

Thanks again.

Holy ¤#¤%%#"!!

I just stumbled on these amazing articles, and printed the condensed version to hang on the wall next to my mixer...

So I tried to follow the recommended equalization setting for guitar and bass - and I was stunned...!!!!
I've just finished recording 5 songs and are playing in this mixing area for the past few weeks, and although I used to do a lot of live mixing and started out with the live stuff with something similar to these concise recommendations... I must say that this new Hi-Fi mixing is in a completely different ballpark... but somehow not at all...

What really troubled me was that I could not get the RMS volume anywhere NEAR what you get on the radio - but now I know... CARVING and LOW FREQUENCY ROLL-OFF is the answer!!!

Now I must complete revise my thinking to make sure I don't loose all the suttleties in the loudness!

So this is - er - well a kind of a bump for anyone new here... 'cause it is REALLY worth it! - Why isn't it sticky?!

So THANK YOU Chaz for "kicking" me into the next phase of my learnings! (I better start posting some of my songs as I get them mixed...)
Dennis P

RE: Using EQ & Compressor links 2006/01/25 15:57:15 (permalink)
Nice stuff Chaz! I didn't read through all the links, but some of it. Seems really useful.

I really enjoyed reading about the "Motown Mix," concept or that other processor which tried to do the same. That is really cool! Can you do this technique easily with good software or with minimal outboard equipment? I don't have an outboard compressor or software compressor right now(just MC2), but I was thinking of getting ABleton Live 4 or 5 and it has one. I would love to try this out to add the benefits of compression and retain most of the vocal expression and not it all quashed away--all the dynamics..

I enjoyed reading about the need for tweaking presets. Sometimes people probably settle for the preset of the closest of what they want, me included--instead of really fine tuning one of the presets.

I need some help and advice on using EQ in Music Creator 2, which is pretty limited, but still useful. It has a P-EQ in there. I have read a good bit about EQ and coming closer to understanding it. Like I understand it is a tone control or specific freq volume control. I know I can raise the mids on vocals to pull them out and more recently, understand that its recommened to cut freq more than boost, if possible--to reduce noise for one and help maintain clarity in tracks and easier on the ears, etc..

Fiddling around with the EQ and reading up has also allowed me to understand why we need to carve out the freq or "the use of complemetary freq," in the article--taking to rhythm guitars for instance and cutting and boosting slightly on both to allow us to hear both with some clarity in the mix, so it's not muddy or one is indistinct.

So I understand some of the basics and feel like I can get pretty good at this for my limited experience. Got a Tascam 414MKII at home I can practice on with 4 bands-low, mid, mid, high. Don't like the thing that much though--bothers my ears when listening to it a lot. Probably the EQ. I listen to it in headphones btw..

Anyways, I was wanting to get better at using the P-EQ in MC2. I don't understand using the presets very well in it and also I am having a hard time visualizing or understanding the shelfs. I can fiddle around with the bands and pull spots up to bring the vocals out, but using the bands, the shelf settings, presets and Q seems a bit much in ways. I have read about "sweeping," to try and find good freq...

Could you walk me through some of this? The manual in MC2 is about worthless reading. I need some good hands on know-how! It seems like you can use the shelfs to reduce some noise in the high end or low end, almost like a high pass or low pass filter, but not the same.

Mr. Oliver
