RE: Using EQ & Compressor links 2006/01/25 16:08:31 (permalink)
Anyways, I was wanting to get better at using the P-EQ in MC2. I don't understand using the presets very well in it and also I am having a hard time visualizing or understanding the shelfs. I can fiddle around with the bands and pull spots up to bring the vocals out, but using the bands, the shelf settings, presets and Q seems a bit much in ways. I have read about "sweeping," to try and find good freq...

Could you walk me through some of this? The manual in MC2 is about worthless reading. I need some good hands on know-how! It seems like you can use the shelfs to reduce some noise in the high end or low end, almost like a high pass or low pass filter, but not the same.

Try posting this in the Music Creator forum. You might have better results posting it there. I am not familiar with that particular program, but most EQs are the same with regards to the fundamental approach.

Nice stuff Chaz! I didn't read through all the links, but some of it. Seems really useful.

I really enjoyed reading about the "Motown Mix," concept or that other processor which tried to do the same. That is really cool! Can you do this technique easily with good software or with minimal outboard equipment? I don't have an outboard compressor or software compressor right now(just MC2), but I was thinking of getting ABleton Live 4 or 5 and it has one. I would love to try this out to add the benefits of compression and retain most of the vocal expression and not it all quashed away--all the dynamics..

I enjoyed reading about the need for tweaking presets. Sometimes people probably settle for the preset of the closest of what they want, me included--instead of really fine tuning one of the presets.

I need some help and advice on using EQ in Music Creator 2, which is pretty limited, but still useful. It has a P-EQ in there. I have read a good bit about EQ and coming closer to understanding it. Like I understand it is a tone control or specific freq volume control. I know I can raise the mids on vocals to pull them out and more recently, understand that its recommened to cut freq more than boost, if possible--to reduce noise for one and help maintain clarity in tracks and easier on the ears, etc..

Fiddling around with the EQ and reading up has also allowed me to understand why we need to carve out the freq or "the use of complemetary freq," in the article--taking to rhythm guitars for instance and cutting and boosting slightly on both to allow us to hear both with some clarity in the mix, so it's not muddy or one is indistinct.

So I understand some of the basics and feel like I can get pretty good at this for my limited experience. Got a Tascam 414MKII at home I can practice on with 4 bands-low, mid, mid, high. Don't like the thing that much though--bothers my ears when listening to it a lot. Probably the EQ. I listen to it in headphones btw..

DigiDesign's Groundwork Archives is one good source for recording/editing vocals ((DigiZine: Groundwork - Oral Hygiene, Parts 1-7, Feb - Mar, May - Sep - 2004)).

Hi Chaz,

You're probably wondering why you've received a reply almost 2 years after you posted.

I've only ever browsed this forum once before (maybe I should make it a habit), but I was taking a lunch break in the office (darn day job always gets in the way). Anyway, some great info - really like the reverb article. Can't wait to try out those double reverb vocal techniques - tonight!

Thanks for taking the time.

Best

I'm still pretty new to all this, and some of the articles I found are WAY helpful. Still learning to use compression, and muddling my way through, but I've found a lot of help in these links. Thanks Chaz!
