VS-700C support in Sonar Platinum
So far as a veteran user (I started with Cakewalk 2.0), I am as usual very happy with the upgrade. But, there is (for me) a big issue: I have been using the VS-700C controller for a couple of years now. Although the support in Sonar X3e could have been better, it was doing everything I needed. After the (much appreciated) update to Platinum however, I am only able to use it as a "Mackie controller", missing out on some familiar functionality. In particular the synchronization with Sonar is lacking (e.g. I can write automation, but in reading automation the faders will not automatically adjust). Also ACT does not seem to be working anymore, although I might be missing some configuration details there. Therefore my number one vote for the next update: enhanced VS-700C support. Since I invested quite some money in the VS-700C it would be quite a bitter pill if I would only be able to use it in a basic sized-down fashion.

A cakewalk staffer mentioned recently that it works exactly the same as in X3. That's based on several of them having their own units.

Yep, been fine for me. And anyone with a long enough memory will recall I was a consistent and vocal complainer about the rapidly waning v700 support in the X series, to the point of tedium, I'm sure. I did then and still do feel essentially ripped off. But hey, no point raking over all that again. But if there was a big problem with Platinum, trust me, I'd be the man to spot it. As far as I can tell so far (two long working days on Platinum), it's exactly the same as it was in X3. Certainly not restricted to Mackie Mode, so I think you have a setup issue. I'd like support to be better. X1 was worse than 8.5, X2 onwards eventually better than X1, but it's never actually been as good as it was in 8.5 again. Which is fairly shocking I think. But now Roland are out of the picture, and it's been quietly discontinued, I think it's likely all over. I'm just glad they're maintaining compatibility at all at this point.

I'll clarify what I've been doing, as I like to think I'm fairly whizzy with the v700 console. Been using the IO control mode to set pre-amp and direct monitor levels while tracking, flipping back to normal mode to tweak the mix, been using my customised access panel set-up to cut, paste, select, change snap modes, all kinds. Full use of faders, and also of the pots, and controlling ProChannel. Even used the Channel Strip section to tweak Rematrix the first time I used that module. Been flying around the same as I have for the last twelve months with no issues.

Hmm, I guess you are right, it must be a setup issue... I'll try to figure it out, somehow the VS700 options does not show up in the preferences dialog to set the control surface. Certainly a big relief I do not have to buy a new control surface!

I found out my problem: I did a big cleanup of my system before installing Sonar Platinum fresh. I somehow lost the VS-700 plugin. I downloaded it, installed it and now it is indeed working as in X3e, which is OK for all my needs...

A fair summary, to be sure. I'm holding on to the Console because the Mackie implementation is solid. I use the 700C with Vegas, Reason, and other programs. However I did replace the audio interface element. It was too unstable compared to other audio interfaces.

You've inspired me to try removing and re-installing the drivers. The TASCAM pres are better, but sometimes I need ADAT or more ins than the US-4x4 has.

I really like the way you can control pre-amp gain and direct mix faders from the console. I'd miss that with a different interface.

Have just realised that there *is* a bug of some sort with this in Platinum. I've checked with the same project in X3, and it works fine, so doesn't seem to be a hardware or project issue. The master fader on the V700 is not responding to changes within the program. So if I move the on-screen master fader, or control it with automation, everything sounds as it should, but the physical fader doesn't move. It works the other way; physical master fader moves are reflected in Platinum. Note that this only applies to the master fader; all other faders are working fine. A particular annoyance arising from this is if you accidentally touch the master fader, which will typically not have changed from the position it had when starting up Sonar, the current physical position is set as the actual fader level. This happens if you just slightly brush against the fader. So if the starting position was -inf, then you have silence. Totally threw me til I realised what it was.

I just tried, but it's working normally. I also tried selecting different Fader Views, but it still read back automation and reflected changes made in console or track view. So I can't really help because I can't reproduce it...sorry.

Would it make a difference that I'm using only the console instead of the console and audio interface together? There's a separate driver for console only. When I re-install the audio driver to see if the audio interface is any more stable, I'll let you know if the situation is any different but it could take me weeks or months to get around to doing this.

I don't know. Personally, though, I think the touch support takes away some of the incentive for a hardware solution.

Well again, it's a Roland product but yes, there really aren't a lot of other options, SSL Nucleus is quite expensive. But aside from the original Mackie control and dedicated hardware surfaces for Ableton Live and DJ programs, control surfaces don't really do that well in the marketplace. That tends to scare off manufacturers, because the investment to create hardware gear is substantial.

This is a very important thread to me. I depend on my VS-700 hardware (I/O and console) and need it to work; otherwise, I would have to stay on my current Sonar version until purchasing a new console. (I have an unused MOTU 896 mk3 in the rack under the VS-700R I/O, so I am in good shape for an interface.) The console is a different story and I don't want to mix on the screen. I really like two-way fader automation—that is, the ability to automate with the physical faders and to see them move in response to automation. I am also very used to many shortcut buttons on the console (views, save, undo, etc.) and to the rotary encoders which I mainly use for pan. Note that the "flip" mode on the console is very handy: temporarily make the faders panpots and vice-versa.

I can confirm that it is indeed intermittent, I just created a new project and then opened a project the master fader did not behave well previously, and: no problem. It would be "nice" though if there was some way to replicate it, i.e. to find out what exactly triggers this behavior.
