The main problem I have with the feature updates is: It installs crap I don't want and deletes stuff I do.
There is never an option on what "features" you want to add.
Do you want to install Paint 3D - No
Do you want to keep your ASIO drivers installed - Yes

The key word here is "options."
I shouldn't have to go through all my settings and reinstall drivers every time windows does an update.

Please let me remind you (everybody who is having a second PC ) to
disable your windows updates and the internet connections to make
sure that the system is running flawless as long as you need your
DAW.
It seems to be now like some years ago for us sonarians:
Never change a running system .

I can recommend to disable the firewall, antivirus ,getting also the last
updates of all plugins and all Splat downloads aso before going offline.
Now my machine is running as stable and
powerful as never before .

Since all the other "alternatives" for Sonar have Windoze or Mac versions.. It might be a good time to consider jumping to Mac OS.

I'm tired of this Microsoft bs.

Don´t want to learn another DAW again .
That´s why I´m in the mood to jump the Logic ship again,
the first host on which I learned to  mix,
if there would not be the high costs for a power mac .

I don´t trust Presonus  much since it seems to be a small
company with likely the same probs as Sonar had....

Don´t want to learn the workflow of a third DAW which is soon stopping support.

Just my 2 cents

Only one minor annoyance noticed...

This last update left me temporarily sound-less after switching my default audio device to the long-disabled Realtek interface. Why on earth it would decide to re-enable a device just to mess with me is a mystery. Maybe somebody at MS read my posts saying not to worry, Windows won't break SONAR and decided "yeh, we'll see about that!".

This on the heels of last week's update, which switched my default to the built-in speakers of my HDMI-connected monitor.

I had exactly the same issues.  But my wife's machine had even bigger problems ... it screwed up her login and created a temporary "user" with the same name but a new dumbed down desktop ... not fixed up to now.  What is going on at M$ ?

Jeez, you guys are very doom and gloom. Do some research before contributing to the scare tactics. Creators update has been out for a while. There were a few things that it did do such as requiring to reinstall VS700 drivers for whatever reason and an issue with AD2 which is easily taken care of. It didn't break Sonar. Not ever update is going to break Sonar. Hell, it could be that no update ever breaks Sonar.

Point is, don't get everyone stirred up about this stuff unless you know what you're talking about and have proof that the issue you may be having isn't caused by an issue between seat and keyboard.

lol, yea, well MS sux... I don't trust them! a Not So Funny thing... I don't see Windows issues except when MS sends an update! FACT. :)

The internet is NOT safe! I don't need MS updates! I have NO use for ANY of the stuff Win Creator is selling. They offer NOTHING for a DAW! I have one win 8.1 system for online... The rest are off line now!
And now NOT having to down load Splat updates... I don't need to be online!
I know many only have one system, that's cool. BUT using MS to protect you online is useless! so you are forced to get updates... BUT what you need a good virus/spyware software! This is experience speaking to you! Get OFF updates for win10 and get some good protection for your system!

Turn off your Windows 10 updates.   I haven't updated my Windows 10 OS in a long time.  After the first Windows 10 update my Addictive Drums 2 didn't work any longer.  After I fixed that problem, I blocked Windows 10 updates and never had another problem.

Hey, how do you turn them off. I've deferred the updates, but I don't know how to actually stop them?

control panel / administrator tool / services. Scroll down and click on windows updates.. you have to set to manual then hit stop.
then you can re set from manual to Disable.

Hello Fabio ,
there are differnt ways to disable the windows updates.
One that works for me :

Turn off Windows Updates in Windows 10

You can do this using the Windows Update service. Via Control Panel > Administrative Tools, you can access Services. In the Services window, scroll down to Windows Update and turn off the process. To turn it off, right-click on the process, click on Properties and select Disabled. That will take care of Windows Updates not being installed on your machine.

Mine was the opposite.  My UR22 became the Windows default device.  Also when I open a DAW the UR22 would install and hang.

This thread has reminded me that everyone has own way of seeing things.....
I would never stop getting updates on a Windows machine unless it was offline all the time, a Mac, or only online for quick file downloads (and that’s even a huge risk in today’s world...file corruptions and attached server worms, etc).
Most of today’s software devs have future OS updates well in advance and have already updated programs and drivers to make adjustments. To me, at least, if a software company is that far behind, and not PreDev’g it’s programs, “there’s your sign”. But that’s my opinion.
Additional note, in all the companies I’ve decided to spend money on, most if not all either have it done in advance, warn of support issues before update released to catch issues and then soon update. Again, to me, a bad sign is when a product either doesn’t support an OS update due to not pre testing, may not have resources to do so, or plain don’t care to invest the time to keep product up to date..... all within reasonable time. For me, I’d say a month after release (considering they could have been making changes for months beforehand). Anything after that makes me look sideways.
My 2cents for what it’s worth.

You might want to have a look at the Mac forums when they do an OS update. They have their own bs to deal with.  It's just more expensive s*** :)

I hear ya, guess that is case for some. I’ve noticed that the newer quad core Mac’s seem to have more issues for some reason, weird! In my own experience, I added an old 2008 iMac (Intel duo core) to my windows home studio about 3 years ago, have upgraded the OS 2 times, and have installed all updates along the way....not much of any issues here, thing is a tank apparently! I’ve had way more problems with iPad iOS updates myself. Guess I’m lucky. As for Windows, had more compliance issues than I’d like when moving over to Win 10, but that has settled nicely now (except for the newest fall creators update and now my ASIO doesn’t like my interface). In my own windows experience overall, they are damn fussy, vulnerable to file errors, and viruses seem to be living in them almost from day one , but they work, cost WAY LESS, and win 10 is major improvement to me! Still not a rock solid machine tho.... at least here.... but I can’t afford crazy $$$ machines either, so there is that aspect.
I like having both actually. Best of both worlds kind of.... in a budget kind of way, lol

I received automatically Windows 10 updates on the 15th of Nov. next day--We had a recording session to do overdubs, vocals, and guitar intro on songs. We had 15 tracks recorded with NO issues Nov. 3.
On Nov. 16th We got vocals on one song and guitar intro on another. Then getting ready to record more vocals, Sonar froze , mouse did nothing, enter key did nothing, up on tool bar, menu stating which song (Not responding) was up there, lower right corner blue screen "Audio dropout"  (Audio engine dropout), clicked a few times the mouse-- The sonar screen went GREY with slight background visible of sonar program tracks screen. Rebooted pc, same scenario, attempted to record again, froze up, blue small screen audio dropout, locked up, ,,no mouse or keyboard actions work.
Wednesday 11-29-2017 same scenario again. Had to scrub session again. Anyone out there having issues similar???? We want to get our songs done and have a nice finished product.

After informing my self on the state of the Fall Creators update, 2 weeks ago I downloaded the iso for my laptop and installed it..after 2 weeks of running smoothly I decided to install it on my DAW where it is also running fine, though I did have to go into Sonar and select my ASIO driver again.

Why oh why do people get so negative?

It messes up XLN, and changes settings that I set.

I didn't have an option to re-select my ASIO drivers because they were removed from my system completely.
I'm still going through and finding things that were added and settings that were changed.

If they want to update their O.S...fine. Give me an option to not install stuff I don't want or need. Most of all "DO NOT!!!" change my settings or delete stuff I do.

Yeah, the Fall Creators Update hoofed out my v700 driver. Which is odd, given that the other Creators update earlier in the year didn't.

I have to resintall drivers of the VS-700C at each big update (1511, 1607, 1703 and 1709) excepted but I'm not sure one of the middle (1607 or 1703).

Here is a reply from XLN which may be of interest.....

Hi John

Thanks for getting in touch with your concerns for our products running inside Sonar. The good news is that you can also run the Online Installer in Compatibility mode should the need arise and you will be still able to use AD2 inside Sonar after a future Win 10 update.

We are considering  the implications of Gibson's decision to drop support for Sonar and are considering several options. however nothing is, of yet, decided upon and probably won't be until after Christmas.

Don't hesitate to get back to me if you need any further assistance.

Wishing you all the very best.

Best regards,
Nick Hutton

That’s pretty much what I thought, having been using Macs in parallel with PC for a while. Having built PCs and admin’d Windows from 3.11 onwards, finding Win10 switiching stuff on I’d switched off and messing around with drivers was the final straw.

Just too much hassle.

Yet again I'm glad I kept going on Windows 7.

+1, spending 50% of one's time at a DAW on computer maintenance gets old the first go round. If Win10 hadn't gotten pushed as forcefully as it did I might have actually tried it, but thankful in hindsight that I didn't.

Today I installed some Updates for my PC, latest Win 10 Update , latest cakewalk (2017/10), and other stuff (drivers) - I run Intel i5, AMD Graphics, 1TB HDD, 256 MB ssd, Quadcapture, Sonar PLat . . . NoProblems, machine is running fast, maybe a bit faster, ASIO drivers as always, It's a joy to work with, I'm looking forward to Sonar 2017/11 (just kidding .....). Possible Problems couldt appear trough different sources - network drivers, Graphics, even drivers for Harddrive controller . . . Win 10 Update will not kill ASIO Drivers by itself, mostly it's a driver conflict with other hardware components. . . .

Re: *WARNING* Incoming Windows 10 Update 2017/12/02 23:13:51 (permalink)
There's a fair amount of panic in this thread about updates breaking Sonar.

For what it's worth, I've got a Windows 7 32 bit PC with every version of Sonar/Cakewalk going back to Pro Audio 9.

Every single one of them works perfectly, regardless of updates.

Yes, updates might break some ASIO drivers; it might break some plugins; but you'd have that issue no matter what DAW you were using.

I've done a fresh Windows 7 install as a backup (just in case), but I'm not going to stop doing Windows 10 updates in the meantime.

Before an update, Windows creates a restore point. If an update really does break Sonar for good - just go to system restore and roll it back. Microsoft normally sorts these issues out pretty quickly and will issue a new update in time.

I bought an new iPad instead of a new Mac or Windows machine.  Not for DAW work (yet) but good for playing synths.

I don't know I like windows 10(coming from Vista),but were not some of the problems caused by rushed Sonar monthly updates.

You don't come around here much do you

Don't be silly, no problems are ever caused by SONAR, it's always Windows updates, 3rd party plugins, pilot error, or your PC sucks, SONAR does not and never has had issues. SONAR, like Cakewalk descended down from heaven as a gift from GOD to the audio world, Cakewalk do not tell lies, mislead or hold anything back from people, they are, as is SONAR, free from defect and without guile. They are always 100% truthful, they don't just tell you what they want you to hear, or what they think you want to hear, and both they and SONAR are unlike any other software or company on the planet. All other software Companies will only tell you what they want you to hear, but not Cakewalk, all other software companies are full of deceit and deception, but not Cakewalk, there is only 1 true and noble company, Cakewalk.  Due to being a direct gift from GOD they are on another plane entirely. Even now, after recent events the delusion continues, the deluded souls believe what they are being fed. It's truly something to behold

without being this kind of religious fanatic dumb, Sonar is just a cool piece of software and the guys at cakewalk just did a good job.

Here's a quick file you can create that will disable or enable Windows update, just in case you want to turn it back on and it works on Windows 7 and newer. You will need to have administrator access, which you most likely already have or you would have issues installing SONAR.

* Open Notepad and copy paste the code below into it
* In the upper left click File > Save As
* In the lower left of the Save As window, change the Save as type menu to All Files
* Name the file: Windows Update Disable or Enable.bat
* Select the location you want to save the file and make sure the file name is still: Windows Update Disable or Enable.bat
* In the lower right click Save
* To run the file right click on it and select Run as administrator
** If you forget to run the file as admin, you may get a prompt window that will do it for you
** If you get a login window, that means you don't have administrator access
* There will be a menu where you can select to Disable or Enable Windows Update or Exit without making any changes
