*WARNING* Incoming Windows 10 Update
Windows 10 just did a fall creators update. I'm not sure if it broke anything in Sonar yet but it did uninstall my ASIO drivers, and it broke AD2. I rolled it back and shut down auto update in services, so I hope that don't break things.

My ASIO didn’t work last night either as I was revisiting my Mixbus 4 daw, wouldn’t recognize my interface output even tho other daws had no problem without ASIO. .... crashed a few times, not a usual thing there. Arg to the Windows update, but hopefully it will get fixed pronto!

I had the 'creators' update this morning. Everything's working fine so far, except AD2 (as usual). Did the 'remove computer' thing at XLN and all is well, and I have a whole slew of new patterns having updated AD2 at the same time.

I'm re building my main DAW with a bigger SSD drive and I'm going back to Windows 7. I will keep the W 10 C drive and put it aside if I change my mind down the road. I've had enough of this roller coaster ride of updates every month routine. Used to be I'd go a year or more and nothing changed. My NXL installers are toast on both my computers now. I have to open the installer to get rid of the nag screens. So I'll see if running Windows 7 fixes that too. I will still have W10 on my other computer I have set up as a clone of my main DAW. So will be interesting to see which machine behaves it self. Anyhow thanks for the warning. Not much I can do about it with W10 Home other than unplug.

Yeah, the Fall Creators Update hoofed out my v700 driver. Which is odd, given that the other Creators update earlier in the year didn't. I think Win10 updates have generally been quite smooth, but I wish Microsoft would be less erratic about this stuff.

Hey, does anybody use Windows 8.1 and can you turn off Windows updates?? My DAW was originally 8.1 and I still have the disk. I would think I could install that instead of my hacked W7 and then re authorize it as the machine sould still be registered. I just remembered my version of W7 is SP1 and it taked forever to update everything.. The only problem I had with 8.1 was it updated overnight to W10 without me asking. But if you can turn off the up dates that won't happen again. I'm not finding this fact on line so if anybody here knows much appreciated.

The last update scrozzled my AMD display driver. The one before that hosed my ASIO driver too (FastTrack C600). We'll see what happens with this one. Both were fixed by reinstalling the drivers. The R-series graphics card is living on borrowed time because it dropped off the official support list for W10. Running the driver installer in compatibility mode works, though, for now. Avid does officially support the C600 driver on W10, but it was last updated in 2014, so here's hoping nothing breaks!

But if you can turn off the up dates that won't happen again. No problems with W8.1 as it almost only has security updates and definitely no large updates and the free upgrade to W10 is over for mainstream users. So no need to turn off updates as if you are online you should let it install the security updates for your safety. It will be getting those until 2021 or 22 so has a long support life. Check exact date online. Note that if you have more recent hardware it won't be supported under W8.1 for that long; again check online.

There is a setting in windows 10 that lets windows update drivers for other devices besides key windows components, for example, It insisted on updating my Graphics card drivers even though the ones it kept installing were causing system crashes and instability. I have since turned this settings off and made a group policy to disable it (just to be sure) Windows can barely keep its own components running smoothly :p i,m not going to let it decide which of my other devices would be better with its own choice of drivers https://www.itechtics.com...river-updates-windows/

I'm still on Win 8.1. I believe you need the pro version which has the group policy editor to turn off updates. The weird thing is, I have Win 8.1 Pro but never went into group policy, and still managed to avoid the Win 10 update. I just turned off the auto update and changed it to "Check for updates but let me decide when to install them" option. When the Win 10 update showed up, I right-clicked on it and chose "Hide". From that point on, I never gave it a thought, and well, I'm still on Win 8.1... so clearly those steps must have worked. Also interesting.... the Win 10 hidden update is no longer there. I could unhide it for a long time, then at some point it just disappeared -- probably when the free Win 10 upgrade expired. That suggests to me that Win 8.1 (any version) should be safe from auto-update to Win 10 now, since it's no longer a free upgrade.

I honestly expect to be able to run this version of Sonar until I can no longer lift the guitar.
Sonar will be that beautiful piece of legacy gear you just can't get anymore.

Only one minor annoyance noticed... This last update left me temporarily sound-less after switching my default audio device to the long-disabled Realtek interface. Why on earth it would decide to re-enable a device just to mess with me is a mystery. Maybe somebody at MS read my posts saying not to worry, Windows won't break SONAR and decided "yeh, we'll see about that!". This on the heels of last week's update, which switched my default to the built-in speakers of my HDMI-connected monitor.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Thanks that totally answers my questions.. after all it is the W10 updates that are the ones screwing with things. I still have 2 W7 computers and they update security stuff without issue so this nails it for me. I will return to W8.1 and I won't have to worry about the updates becuase those updates are probably harmless. I didn't think about that. And just so everyone knows you can still get W10 for free if you use the accessabiliy deal.

My understanding is that Microsoft is no longer forcing upgrades to Win10 from Win7 & Win8. And with those older Windows versions, you could still set updates to never check, if you want to avoid the monthly security and quality rollup patches.

Currently on Windows 10 home 64 bit, version 1709, system build 19299.98. In Sonar, I am using version 2017.10 (23.10.0.14). My Asio drivers come from my soundcard installation. I never changed them. Hope this helps.

My problem has not been W10 and Sonar it self. It the re authorization of 3 of my plug in licencers and sometimes settings get changed. And the messing with drivers is another PO. It keeps reverting my Graphic drivers to some generic junk. I loose my second screen resolution options. I'm happy this thread showed up because I had not even thought of W 8.1. That was a good year for me when I used W 8.1. If I remember correctly I had smooth sailing. I didn't want W10 it just happened and I caved in.

yes 8.1 works fine for me on two systems.. and you can shut off updates as you can with 10 & 10pro. in Admin tools / Services.... But I still get the updates on 8.1 when I choice.. I shot off 10 and 10ro forever a couple months back! but you have to makes sure you have great virus software! Though now the only thing I go inline for with those systems is Virus software updates... lol peace!

Jeez, you guys are very doom and gloom. Do some research before contributing to the scare tactics. Creators update has been out for a while. There were a few things that it did do such as requiring to reinstall VS700 drivers for whatever reason and an issue with AD2 which is easily taken care of. It didn't break Sonar. Not ever update is going to break Sonar. Hell, it could be that no update ever breaks Sonar. Point is, don't get everyone stirred up about this stuff unless you know what you're talking about and have proof that the issue you may be having isn't caused by an issue between seat and keyboard.
