Grem let me summarise.

Right now you are also stating it is going to go all bad and that people should resign from being hosts. You then state that hosts are being defensive rather than what people have actually done which is clarify the situation and treat it with good humour. Fine.

Btw I already clarified the situation that I edited one of my dupe posts (which a lot of people do in these forums) I don't see why this is a bombshell.

You are entitled to your opinion but yet nothing has actually really happened yet.

When something actually happens that you regard is an injustice or unfair then please be sure to speak up, in the meantime my request is can we all stay away from all this negativity and just be cool. Treat others like you would want to be treated (that's how I would form the basis of being a forum host).

What you are really dealing here is a bunch of people who will be mainly moving posts around into the correct slots and I can't imagine why that would be bad unless you believe there is some sort of conspiracy going on, which there isn't. The other alternative is that you think none of us are up to the job and we are going to end up like fascist dictators. But there is no basis. Please be a little positive it helps all of us.

Cheers..

This has gotten ridiculous rather fast. People are arguing over what "might" happen and percieved self-fulfilling prophecies when nothing has actually occured so far except some names have an extra title. I'm not sure if the sky is falling crowd is better or worse than the defense crowd. Yes, Cake made a mistake displaying a not fully formed system that lacked in details. In the big picture though, it is not a big deal. It's not like they were hoarding a cure for cancer and selected only a few to have it.

OK, I'll hold my hands up, I have definitely been a right tool about this.

But can some of you guys hold your hand on your heart and say you're ok with working alongside John?

After all some of us have said about the guy?

Have you no pride?

No ironic sense of the underlying hypocrisy of this.

Can a leopard change its spots.

Can I ever get over myself?

Won't anyone think of the children?

To find out the answers to these questions, and more...... tune in for next week's riveting episode of I love Lucy John

Seriously, he might be a great bloke. I don't know him as well as you all probably do by now, but I can only speak as I find. Can you honestly look at yourselves in the mirror without remembering how he's treated some of you? And what about his mega-rag on all of us in the CH? And this guy is on a committee helping to decide how best to run these forums? With you?

Sorry guys, but this is so wrong. Fair enough, if you're getting paid to do this that's cool - he who pays the piper and all that - but if it's purely voluntary, I honestly thought I knew some of you better.

But then again, who am I to talk. I'll admit I've definitely been a bit harsh too, especially to Ed. He didn't deserve all the crap I've been flinging at him. Even though I'm still convinced some of what I said was valid. But not nice. Sorry Ed.

Great points Dub.

And you're absolutely right of course - we really should wait and see how all this pans out before getting too critical.

Cakewalk must know what they're doing, and they must know their regular forum members well enough to know who's up to the job and who isn't.

I must have missed whatever John did. Most of the threads I have seen him participate in, he has come off as knowledgeable and reasonable. I certainly could nitpick almost any selection if I were inclined, but I think it's pointless without knowing exactly what their function and limits are. If they are mostly spam fighters then does it really matter who does it? I think the criteria for moving topics and fighting spam is mostly being here enough to be effective. Unless one thinks John (or any other person seen as having personaln issues with other members) is going to have the power and act on such over the top behavior like deleting all FSF stuff as spam, this is a lot of adieu about nothing so far. Getting worked up over hypothetical speculation is just not healthy. One of the reasons I was not sure Steve was being serious is because he seems more closely associated with the majority of those selected than most. I'm more outside of the inner circle than he and I'm not losing any sleep over this.

Isn't that how most wars start ?

Anyway, at what point does having an opinion on any given subject become arguing ? Why can somebody not object to the idea of something ? Am I arguing now or just asking questions ?

Apart from anything else, it's at least a welcome change of subject from freaking Am and becan all the time.

For me it's the domino theory.

If we allow forum hosts it won't be long til the communists take over.

Seriously, I think we're all over-reacting a smidgen. With so many things to worry about in today's world what direction this forum goes is certainly not one of them.

and as Paulo just stated I too see this as a discussion. I don't sense any hostility. (maybe just a smidgen)

Re: WOW! Look at all the moderators we've got now! 2014/09/20 15:08:27 (permalink)
Yes I was discussing. Why would someone take it any other way? Did they over react?

Been around here a long time. I've seen some things go on here that I didn't agree with.

Take John: Good guy always helpful, but has a tendency to come off as holier than thou.

Alex: If a thread doesn't stay in topic he's quick to let you know. I believe he has an agenda he wants to carry out on how these forums should go.

Again let me state before anyone takes it wrong, I think both these guys are beneficial to the forum. And I think they are generally good guys. But to be on a committee deciding how this place is run?

I with Steve on this: no one sees anything wrong with this?

As for over reacting I stated from the very beginning that I had a bad "feeling" about this. When I saw the "forum moderator" labels, I just felt, "yep this is how I thought it would go." So no I don't see anyone over reacting. Just people stating their views. And they are not liking how it is developing.

And I will state that CW has the right to do what they want. It's their place, not ours.

@ Alex

Amongst many other things, John once deigned to pop down here and basically proceed to explain why he thought we were, in his opinion, all degenerates and the Coffee House was the cesspit of the internet.

He was, of course, fully entitled to that opinion. However, I think what put a lot of backs up was that his opinions were probably based more on hearsay and reputation than on his personal experience of the place.

More galling still, he was completely oblivious to the many good things that have gone on down here - acts of charity, kindness and friendship - the like of which are as rare as hens teeth in cyberspace.

I can't speak for others, but as one of those targeted by his tirade of ignorance, I'd find it extremely difficult to park those memories and comfortably sit on the same committee as him.

So...

The way I see it, the hosts are supposed to act as a sample of the forum population - to debate amongst themselves what's wrong and what isn't, who went too far, etc... A senate, one put in place by the moderators.

In the past, if I posted something which offended CraigB*, every forum member (including the new hosts) would be free to join the thread, to voice their concern, to tell me whether I went too far or whether CraigB is being a drama queen and overreacting as always, and even report me to the moderators and get the thread locked.

In the future, while this will still be possible, the cool kids club (nothing against most of them personally) will also have their own sub-forum to chat amongst themselves and with the moderators. What will be the outcome of this? I don't know - maybe they'll have the worst arguments ever and discussions that derail into oblivion.

What I do know, is that whenever one of them participates in a tread, I won't be able to avoid thinking that they're here on duty, as double agent for better or for worst - that if I get into an argument with one of them, it's likely to be brought up to the senate during their next meeting.

I also know that while some of them are very transparent and honest (as far as I can tell), others are more likely to act as backstabbers.

Before, all they had was the option to hit the report button, just like every one of us. Now they sit on the senate. How much power does that give them? Perhaps not much, perhaps practically nothing.

But if that's the case, what's the point of making them hosts instead of just having polls for the entire forums, especially if you insist on taking on having people from every horizon to represent the diverse opinions?

This community is a very unique one - I've said it before and I'll say it again. Technically, I probably shouldn't be hanging around here as I don't use Sonar anymore (though I still use the Cakewalk instruments available on my platform).

Not only is it unique, but it goes way back - many of us have been regular here going way back to the forum's beginning, 11 years ago, and some of us know each other from the old Cakewalk NG days which preceded this forum.

Which is why going in and handpicking a couple of cool kids isn't going to please every one. I for one know that it'll kill the spontaneity of my exchanges with them. I'm evaluating whether or not I should address them as Sir, or Your Excellence...

Cakewalk still hasn't said what abilities Forum Hosts will have over regular users.

I'm waiting to see what Cakewalk decides to let Forum Hosts be able to do, before I evaluate, but some users have raised some reasonable concerns against powers granted to Forum Hosts, IMHO.

Again, I'm waiting to see just what powers will be granted. But I can say for one thing, I hope us forum users who have been around here a long time, but don't have a great many posts, wont get zapped because we voice an opposite opinion to that of any Forum Host/s, if Forum Hosts get zapping power.

Right now the forum "hosts" are debating how things will be run around here. In their own forum. Without any of our input.

Something "is" happening!

I hope these new "hosts" won't go all power mad and ban all paranoia from the forums.
