35mm Hell, the bible bashers have turned up now! I've been on the upgrade path too and paying my way. Last time I did that was when I bought the lifetime deal. I got 11 months out of that before Cakewalk went down. Looking on the bright side, I don't have to pay for an update again so in a kind of mystical way I got my free lifetime deal after all. Meng doesn't seem to be a slouch in the Business world so I imagine there is a good reason he is making it free. Of course, if this multiplies the user base by a magnitude which it is likely to do, development will scale up too which means that it will improve at a faster rate than before. This all seems very advantageous. In a nutshell, Bandlab has every right to do as they please with all the Cakewalk property that THEY PAID FOR. You don't get to dictate or complain about what they do with it. You do get to choose whether you use it or not - for free.
I may have missed it but I didn’t read any bashing. If you are going to use a philosophical or an authoritative reference to justify a comment then that comment should be justified by that reference in this case the insulting of someone’s maturity and intellectual capacity did not seem to be justified by that reference. But I believe we all got the point. In reference to the OP and the thread, people who buy things get to do as they will with them. The buyer of this product decided to give it away for free. How cool is that. I can now collaborate with all my musician friends who could not afford Sonar in the past. BandLab and I'm not a social media person at all has proven itself to me as being the most incredible thing of the 21st century. I found a harp player in Iran and a vocalist in Singapore in the first few minutes of looking, how unexpected was that. Hugely unexpected from my perspective. I'm sold on this company and BandLab. edit...the search engine in BandLab could be improved

dappa1 BMOG your jealousy is outrageous. The fact that you are saying it openly really shows how ignorant you are. In fact, your mindset is an embarrassment. I don't expect a moderator to shut down this post. I would expect you to fall on your sword.
Now I have read every comment and like someone earlier stated that this is the internet so everyone behind a keyboard can say what the wish, BUT you DAPPA1 are crossing the line! Your opinion of my thoughts is one thing but to call me ignorant and jealous are direct shots at me now my opinion on a piece of software. There countless number of post who disagree with me and gave valid reasons why without making things personal. So what I am in the minority that see this as a glass half empty, most of the people who see the glass as half full are not saying I am wrong in my way of thinking but they just choose to look what the free opportunity can do for others. Does not make my perspective wrong either. Their is no wrong or right here, this was a vent of how I felt about being a life time member of this product. DAPP1 be very careful of your comments, keep it about software and not about me personally because know one on here knows me personally! Why would would a moderator shut this down, so much good information has come from this, internet tough guys like yourself are the reason there should be some form of a vetting process before allowing people like yourself to post.

Good point it seems this happens when the software is sold!

Because updates and future plugins will be based on this version rather than the previous one.
That's what he kind of what he said though. Install it when they update it.

BMOG I feel you and I understand why you feel the way do. I give you credit for being open to other points of view and maybe even leaning at bit more to the center because of it. I'm really hoping this works out for everybody in the long run. I can see many benefits to this plan of action by Bandlab but...my biggest fear of this that people will look down at it because of the stigma of the freeware label. Sometime people perceive things as less than because they are free or inexpensive. Or the "if it cost more it must be better" camp. Flstudio aka Fruityloops had that stigma for a looooong time. One for it's very humble beginnings and two for seeming cheep. What saved it was it's ever increasing user base (very huge now) and its constant development. I'm hoping Bandlab can do the the same for us. As a consistently top 10 DAW around for over 30 years we already have a head start.

Yeah I just think you were actually agreeing with the other poster, but it looked like you weren't. This is an 'Early Access' Bandab have called it that. I never adapted the early access versions when Sonar adpoted it in the last couple of years, so I see no difference hear. Already there have been concerns with the installer, and BandLab have said they will address that next release. So I'll at least wait for that. I don't think BandLab have any plans t change the free model soon, it's not really up and running, s there is 'urgency' as say. I wasn't mad at Roland when they sold it because they made some pretty cool changes and when Gibson bought it and a host of other brands along with it they made some great changes to Cakewalk as well. I guess I could be mad at Gibson but what purpose would that serve they will have to answer to many for much and it doesn't forward my music making. Now many people that couldn't get a copy to use will and that will create a gigantic user base keeping people connected to making music how awesome is that and we all get to be a part of it if we choose. I dig it, I'm in with no regrets.

For me, this was FANTASTIC news. I was stuck with Sonar X2, which worked great on my old system but has been a headache since I upgraded and had to reinstall everything. I had always intended to update Sonar to Platinum when the time was right, but of course I missed my chance. When Cakewalk shut down, I was disheartened. I wound up trying Studio One and Cubase, searching for a new DAW. Cubase came close to what I needed (and I will likely still use it sometimes), but the more I used other DAWs, the more I missed Sonar.
Enter Bandlab. When I read the news that Bandlab had intended to raise Sonar from the dead, I was hopeful but hesitant. I had no expectation that it would all happen so soon. I was struggling with X2 on my newly updated system, when I chanced upon this thread. I couldn't believe it. What? Cakewalk's back, already? And it's FREE?
When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. So I strolled over to the Bandlab site, found Cakewalk, downloaded, installed...and then started doing the happy dance. Finally, Cakewalk is back and my studio is just the way I wanted it. Fanfriggintastic!
While the free aspect will certainly turn the industry on its ear, maybe that's exactly what it needs. I'm not worried about all the years and money I invested in the "old" Cakewalk. Every cent was well worth it. But times change, and here we are. I'm looking forward with cautious optimism.

WOW, i mean WOW... BMOG, you really opened a can of juicy worms. I have spent more time reading posts than working on music in my *grand* new CbB today. I am a Cake user since DOS daze and have paid my way. I didn't get every version of SONAR, usually every other until X where I got all 3 and on to SPlat. When CW was deep sixed I made the rounds... *nothing* measured up, least of all Pro Tools. (Samplitude was closest.) I had finally decided to stay with SPlat 'till the ship sank and Meng came into my life with glittering promises that I greedily gobbled. When Cakewalk by BandLab was offered for free, I *rejoiced!* Unlike the OP, I was not offended in the least. Meng simply took good ship SONAR in a new direction. Hey, his ship! My drummer, who was on X2 also grabbed it and we are now able to exchange .cwb's. Joy! And free! Maybe I'm just an old hippie but I think free lunch is grand. I *love* sharing free lunch with as many as possible. That I paid for something in the past is irrelevant and I cannot fathom your pique, BMOG. I have enjoyed the debate, though. Best to you!

I think this is great for Sonar and could be just a massive user base increase. Seems totally feasible this could position Sonar to become one of the most commonly used DAWs. It would sure be interesting to know the number of downloads that have happened. I suppose a Mac version would be a nice, but in the big picture, there are so many more potential users already on Windows. Plus you've got lots of media professionals who are totally not happy with Mac hardware, and I do not blame them. My current machine is a refurb and runs great. $375 delivered. No way I feel any need whatsoever to buy a new Mac.

Fresh great post and I am more in the center now! There were some great post that gave me another way of looking at it. What did the most for me is that because I have paid, the free version will not have all those bells and whistles my version has. But I will wait and watch for a while before installing the new version, I use my current SPLAT everyday and very pleased with my results

Leee I paid for a lifetime subscription and in return got months and months of updates and new features for my money. If Sonar remained as abandonware, I still would be using it and still getting my initial money's worth. But now Bandlab is starting from scratch. They have picked up the ball dropped by Gibson and are now running with it. I suspect they will start adding even more updates and features (ones I haven't yet paid for), and I will happily continue to use what I already paid for, and have the choice to use new features that will be offered.
If you want to get caught up in semantics, then yes, you'll soon be paying for new features that "you should have" been getting for free with your old "Lifetime updates". But through no fault of their own, Bandlab has saved Sonar from oblivion, while at the same time attempting to honor the folks who paid for a lifetime subscription. Meaning that we won't get double charged for features we already paid for! In a perfect world Gibson/Cakewalk would have survived and we'd be getting lifetime updates for free until we croak. But sh*t happens and we're faced with a new reality. I'm satisfied with all the updates and features I already got with my "lifetime" subscription, and I'm greatly relieved that Cakewalk won't stop working now if MS releases a Windows update that might've screwed Sonar up.
I choose to see it as a good thing and I don't feel like I've been screwed or taken advantage of. But obviously others will try and make the WORST out of this situation. And quite honestly, this kind of petty bickering and open hostility makes it seem more like people fighting about politics than a simple change in ownership of DAW software. Make music and let it go, you'll be much happier and live longer!
I think you have covered both the situation and my sentiments t the situation quite well there Leee.
Wanted to mark Leee's post helpful, but you beat me to it.

Indeed. New users were happy it was so cheap, long-time users were miffed, stores that sold Logic were distressed, companies selling Mac software that didn't have hundreds of billions of dollars in the bank were devastated...especially those who had supported the Mac through thick and thin, like the Gil Amelio years. I talked to one company that felt Apple might as well have said "Thanks for your loyalty and support, we really appreciate it!! Now go out of business - it's not our fault you weren't smart enough to make iPhones." Seems to me that BandLab is adopting the Microsoft model and the original intention behind lifetime updates: You get the core for free, then pay for the extras you want. It doesn't really hurt anyone, helps a lot of people (those dependent on Cakewalk continuing to exist), and will allow more people more options. Works for me. I suspect we'll also see more and more people using more than one program. After a period of mutual appropriation of features, I see music software programs diverging to the point where people will "double" on programs even more than they do now.

Whilst it's true that new users can install the new release for free, those of us with an existing installation still have access to the many Platinum extras. They'd have to spend a lot of money to build up a comparable system. At the end of 2017 we had an unsupported DAW, now we have new momentum with a decent chance of a healthy future. I don't feel like I've lost anything, quite the opposite.

Meaning that we won't get double charged for features we already paid for! Has this been confirmed by Bandlab? Just curious

Songroom Whilst it's true that new users can install the new release for free, those of us with an existing installation still have access to the many Platinum extras. They'd have to spend a lot of money to build up a comparable system. At the end of 2017 we had an unsupported DAW, now we have new momentum with a decent chance of a healthy future. I don't feel like I've lost anything, quite the opposite.
Exactly. Even I, with 8.5 as my latest pre-Bandlab version, have Dim Pro, LP64 EQ and LP64 Multiband. People with Platinum have much more. and we all have free updates to Bandlab for the foreseeable future. Pretty much the situation that existed with lifetime updates. And people are complaining. Imagine that.

I would be curious to install this CbB on a fresh machine that had no other DAW present. I would imagine it would be similar to Home Studio as far as content goes. Scook said it's more like Artist. I wonder if that Home Studio for free is still happening? If someone hasn't done this could you try it? you copy paste this: 3327-46FD-8F9A-BBC7 Here http://www.cakewalk.com/Redeem?kl=16&promo=CM250

I don't recall making the comparison but it's possible. There is not much visible difference between SHS and Artist. IIRC, the bundled plug-ins are similar SHS has limits (for details see the comparison chart) the regular SONAR line did not have. The DAW part of CbB is Platinum. The additional content currently shipped with CbB is the Artist Instrument Collection which is similar if not the same as Home Studio. Rapture Session has not been ported to BandLab. Not sure if the plan is to port it or just Rapture Pro. Regardless, I think this is a better description of CbB right now.
