What the heck is DUBSTEP?

I have a project coming up where I have to take some acapella vocals and create a dubstep song...from my limited listening so far dubstep is a special kind of dance music, heavy beat but what really is it?THANKS! - Shawn

I could try to explain it but I'd probably suck at it. However once when I asked my self the same question, I read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubstep

And may I recommend you check out this: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=reHGIYHAR2Q (foul language warning)

dubstep is originally a london thing, kinda off shoot of london garage, characterised by 2 beats to the bar, with basslines that have the cut off/pitch lfo'd heavily, if you are not a dance music composer in reality, then you have a big task to nail it, all the best on this one, any chance of letting me know how you get on with this ??

Massive is the Dubstep synth #1! Check out musicradar.com for tutorials and articles on dubstep. It's an interesting genre from a production point of view

Massive? I thought everyone loved it! I think it's brilliant, easy to get killer sounds from scratch or by tweaking presets. And it's hard to find a better VSTi for live tweaking

Ah, Get it I'm not a big dubstep fan my self but I appreciate the production technique and steal some ideas every now and again. And there are a few dubstep acts I really like, in particular Borgore.

    But I see your point

You're creating a dupstep track for Sounds of Blackness???  LOL!!!  That's an odd combination to say the least.

Anyway, check UKF Dubstep Youtube channel.  Hundres of dubstep songs there from some of the best of the genre.

    https://www.youtube.com/user/UKFDubstep/videos

I will say this, it can be a time consuming process for someone not used to creating that type of music and Sonar is NOT a dubstep friendly program from my brief experience.  There is a LOT of automation involved (assuming you're creating your own sounds and not using samples) and that is one of Sonar's weaker areas.  The broken copy/paste synth automation bug alone will be a pain in the a## and causes more work than necessary.

Also, the weird way Sonar reads out values on the automation envelopes is an issue since dupstep relies heavily on automating LFO's to sync w/ different note lengths based on the bpm.  Sometimes it will give you the proper readouts like 1/8, 1/16, etc.  Other times it will just give a percentage value.  In the case of creating dubstep you will definitely prefer the former.  Someone w/ more knowledge may know a solution for that one, but I haven't figured out the rhyme or reason to it yet.

    Some good dubstep tools:

    - Massive (as mentioned)

    - Razor

    - Z3ta 2 - if you want some good starting presets that may save you some time check out the Mutant Rebellion & Revenge (both on sale right now) and Xenos Deadly Dubtronica (cheaper option) preset libraries in the Cake store which seem to be geared specifically to that genre.

    - Youtube - there are literally hundreds of vids and tutorials on how to create dubstep type sounds and tracks for a variety of different softsynths

    - some good distortion/bitcrusher tools will come in handy (there are some good free ones out there)

bottom line is if your faking a genre, it'll stand out a mile.

you need to know how the structure of the tune is for a start, to be dj friendly and even then , well it won't get played out too much if you don't know the right people.

if they are asking for a remix for the sake of a mix that's a different matter.

sure there are tutorials etc.. BUT they are well out of date, in some cases. the trick is to be doing the next thing as early as possible.

To make your life easier, suggest checking out this plug:

    http://illformed.org/plugins/glitch/

It makes super crazy mashups of music really easy. Write a nice dubstep line and then use this vst to control the manipulation of the song you're doing and it should sound awesome with some tweaking.

HIGHLY suggest checking it out. It's free. It'll save you 20 hours of cut and paste mash-up time.

Sonar X1 is the best, its got a built dubstep button!

On serious note I'm not a massive fan myself, but like ProjectM I appreciate the production side, as its not as easy to create as it sounds.

I think it's a valid question. I have no experience with other DAWs, but my guess is the SONAR is NOT the most user friendly for creating dubstep type mixes. Doesn't mean it can't be done, but I'm sure programs like FL and Abelton are more suitable for a faster workflow.

I would guess you would use some of the effects in the native instrument komplete package if you have those. The finger in particular would probably provide a lot of unique effects. I'd play bass along to a lot of dubstep tunes and search for them on youtube to find them. I always start with playing bass to the ideas in my head and come up with backing ideas to my guitar parts and work off that to find a nice mix of parts to comp with and maybe record. Bass is the base so start there and move from that point.

Just really curious here: why would a dubstep group or artist be asking someone else to create his/their music? I am sure you will do a very fine job, but it seems odd that an award-winning dubstep artist would ask someone unfamiliar with the style to create the music. I would think the artist would compose it. There must be a really interesting story behind this. At any rate, best of luck and I am sure it will be great.
