great story here ed.
its got almost a retro feel to it,like it was recorded using legacy equipment.
got that mama' and the papa's feel to it...im a big fan of them,i own every album they ever put out and then some.
the chorus is really nice in this song, it really gains power with the piano.

this is a great song,i do feel your voice works with this song and works well.
there's just a few spots where I think are a little out of key(but not by much)

this is a great song, big seller if you ask me, it has all the potential, good lyrics, good melody's and powerful changes.

I think it has what it takes to achieve staus and I think it serves as a vehicle for you to transport you feelings from the unknown place we don't know about you to the real world.

Listening to the new mix on earbuds, I cannot honestly hear the bass at all except for on some of the runs.

The guitars are still too loud and too much high end. Is it the stereo effect causing this? I would ditch it altogether, do a single acoustic on the left, put the piano on the right and call it a day.

I really enjoyed this piece.  The effects/recording gave the mix a very cool classic analog/60.s vibe.  KUDOS!

Very Dylanish. I really enjoyed this. I don't think I had ever heard your voice before - love it.

I like the delivery/phrasing of the lyrics. You could loosen up a bit as Frank mentioned. Reminds me of Dylan just a little.

Thanks Scotty. Yeah, gotta work on that "loosen up" thing.

Yeah, I could not hear the bass in the car either. An the vox was still a little lost to me.

So, "final" misx is up. Took your advice on the panning of the guitar and piano and upped the bass 2.5db and the vox 2db.

I'm gonna call it a day and "in the can".

The new mix seems more balanced.

How about pulling the guitars back on the chorus and letting the piano breathe a bit in those parts.

It may not be that the strummed guitars are too loud... it may just be that they are omni present.

Maybe pull the guitars back at places and then pop them up where the strumming propels the song.

On the other hand there are places where the piano parts seem busy where I am listening for some sort of chordal pad of whole notes. Those parts are on the verses where I am listening for some sort of chord bed to frame the vocal help it sound harmonious.

The bass is playing a great supportive part... there are times where I might try to see if the piano could support the vocals in the same simple way but with simple chords rather than just bass notes.

The turnarounds and intro sound just right. The piano parts and the guitar mesh nicely there.

That's the place to bring the guitars up t where they already are... to ramp up some excitement after the verse.

I like the use of reverb.

I personally, like to place my pop combo mixes in one room... that's from my interest in live music listening of pop combos.

I think this song could gel up a bit if the reverb used on the different instruments seemed a bit more similar. Am I making a fool of myself here? Are they all the same reverb on a bus? Or are you mixing and matching?

I like to use some reverb as an effect and then some master reverb as glue. I'd be interested in more "glue" but I think that you may also want to tweak the effect reverb to make it all work smooth.

You know I hate saying this stuff so do me a favor... don't pay attention to anything I just wrote. ;-)

Hugs and pancakes.

best regards,
mike

See previous post to Mr. Jamesyoyo about the panning of the guitar and piano.

FWIW, the piano, bass, acoustic guitar and dulcimer do not have any verb on them. The drums have room mics. The only verb on the whole track is on the vox, so in that sense the "mix and match" on this tune amounts to the electric guitar (doubled on the dulcimer solo at the end) using a Fender Twin Reverb, drums and the vox (using an EMT 250).

The new balance seems real nice.

The vocals are sitting in a real nice place.

When I was speaking of the reverb on the instruments... well, it seems like the samples, the piano etc. have there own reverb.

I think it must be baked into the samples.

I kept listening for a hammered dulcimer.

Now I realize that the harpsichord thingy is the dulcimer you have been referring too.

My wife just walked by and said it was great song.

best regards,

It's actually the Dim Pro "Dulcimer Hammered" patch/sample with no FX or treatment of any kind.

I do agree that at the end when the electric guitar doubles the solo line it sounds a bit more like a harpsichord.

I think the song would benefit from a few more syllables per line, the words are good but too stretched out.  More syllable I think would help the flow.  Good lyrics and a good song.

Hi, Ed,

I missed the first mix of this, but this is really a well written, fantastic song with a great story, and I think your vocals on this are excellent!

Nice playing on all of the instruments, a clean, full sounding mix and an absolutely great job on the vox! :)

Really nice work, buddy!

Ed - thanks for being real on this one.  The production does not matter one bit compared to you putting yourself out there on a very cool tune about you.  Loved it.  Thanks much for posting this.

Jim

Thanks for that Jim. I have tuned up the production a little. Now I'm just nitpickin' it to death.

Hi Ed - You have definitively improved the feel and mix.

The best part of all of this is that it is you all the way.  I hope you continue this trend.  I enjoy your work with you other buddies but when a song gets personal, it gets real and at that point production values become very subjective compared to the art you are creating.  I have caught myself many times enamored by the tools I use instead of what I am building.  I think many of us can tell the difference.  For your song, whatever makes you happy will make others happy too.
All the best.

Jim

Only heard the most recent mix - and I like it. I don't have the experience to comment on the mix but I like the vocals and the heartfelt lyrics and the way that everything other than the vocal is supporting the fact that it's a story and not barging saying "listen to me, listen to me!!!!"

Cheers,
Terry.

Ed, I have a song about my fight with the monkey.  I am re-doing it now.  Your song has the same rooted lyrics, rooted in your fight for a life beyond addiction.  I was reading and listening to the lyrics and song.  There's no way for me to critique a song like this because I couldn't get past your story.  It parallels mine a lot and thanks to my lovely lady I will celebrate 25 years on the 31st of this month. I'm glad you wrote and posted it.  Peace to you brother!

Hi Ed,

Well, as usual I'm late to the party! I missed all the earlier versions but the current mix sounds good to me.

Anyway, I think the honesty of the lyrics and delivery shine through and that's the most important thing.

Great job on doing everything yourself, too!

A remix is up.

Tried some new EQ, changed the piano module (from an upright to a Yamaha C7 from Ivory). Tried to get the bass and kick tighter (EQ wise).

This is the first song I've worked with/on in over four months so it was only fitting that it be the last song I wrote and recorded.
(starting a new business is h3ll).

I hope to get some time to listen some new music here very soon.

Well, today is 7/9/13 and it sounds good to me. It does have a bit of a Dylan type vibe and does seem to be in places a bit stiff. Over all, the music sounds mixed very nicely and the vocals are nice and clear. Not a bad song at all, nicely done.

Sounds great. The improvement is remarkable.

The piano sounds a bit muted.

The Harpsicord break may be just a bit more prominent than it needs to be.

It still sounds like a great song. Well done.
