I am pleased and how CIVIL the discussions are in this thread. I am not a defeatist, but I am in Bubbas camp about not fighting it all, if its my short straw, then so be it. However, Spacey brought up a good point, and I sure do wonder what my brother-in-laws designs might be. I think a visit to a lawyer and drawing up some papers might protect me from the real issue.

Every generation has "end of times" sort of fears, though the causes change. Some of it might be instinctive, some of it is very likely fear mongering, but I also have come to believe that some of it is pure self-importance - i.e. the world is going to end in my lifetime. But there is very little real evidence to support any of it. Yes, it makes some sense to be prepared for natural disasters in areas prone to such things. But the idea of imminent global economic collapse just isn't supported. Renowned value investor Warren Buffet is still buying stocks. Now before anyone argues with this, I have a rule: I only take economic advice from billionaires. I figure, "if someone knows so much they should be a billionaire by now". I'll start believing all of this economic fear when Wall Street shows even the slightest sign of concern over it. Yeah, I know, the finance experts who devote their life to it are all idiots while the people stocking up on ammo know "the truth", right? Really? What we have here is a bunch of faulty reasoning, misinformation, irrationality and the like. Just because excessive debt, for instance, is a long term problem doesn't make it an imminent crisis. A lot of that is just political BS, plain and simple. And if it's a difficult long term problem, the rational solution is not to buy ammo, it's to evaluate the solutions. The idea that it's somehow more rational to prepare for "the end" than to consider compromise involving sacrifices, thus making an artificial future crisis inevitable, is not a remotely reasonable argument. People routinely worry about stupid stuff and ignore real problems. But I'm stocked up on guitar strings, just in case.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Anyone who thinks things are alright must have their head so deep in the sand its not funny. I think the only worthy discussion is what will come first?.. a) Economic Collapse:? There is a serious economic collapse ahead and it frankly any financial fix is so unpopular the self serving politicians of all parties would never vote for it....unemployment of 25-30%, riots, starvation, massive increase in crime rates... b) Climate Collapse:? The human virus through over-population has devasted the ecosystem with over-fishing, over-farming, deforestation, pollution and contributed to what is being projected as almost irreversible climate change... Hurricanes like Sandy will seem a trivial regular occurrence, massive deaths from hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, famine, earthquakes, food and water shortages, riots, civil war.. no matter how bad things are right now...a point in time will come when these are the "good old days"

It's the end of the world as we know it......yes. It wasn't the same yesterday, won't be the same tomorrow. Get ready to adjust normal. All the preparation in the world only buys some time from the inevitable. Enjoy today, prepare for tomorrow and let the rest up to God.

Most civilizations through history have faded away through nobody caring about them anymore. They don't end they just re-occur with different names in different places. Arming yourself against an enemy is difficult to do when the enemy is yourself. I'm just going to watch, learn and adapt to what comes next I think, then I realize that's all any of us have been doing all along. In a world of relativity most things have two ends anyway everything else is in-between. Anyway, anyone want a bang on this number? I think I've bogarted it for long enough now, but I'll roll another before this one ends.

My dream job of driving trucks across America turned into a nightmare when I broke down in the desert hundreds of miles from civilisation. After three days, the water ran out and I started drinking my own urine. After a week, I could no longer recycle my urine, and I realised I was out of options and had to accept the inevitable... So I opened some of the Budweisers that I was delivering.

Well I don't drink anymore but there was a time I enjoyed the odd bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale...having grown up within smelling distance of the brewery the taste of it is deeply ingrained in my soul. And they sell it in America so that was always my beer intake covered. I would never drink Budweiser in a million years. It reminds me of a super-cheap junk lager that the Scottish & Newcastle brewery used to make, called Federation Ace. I mean truly bottom of the barrel stuff. It's not that America doesn't have any good ales....Brooklyn Lager is fantastic....but why in the world so many people drink Bud is beyond me. It's the Hershey's Chocolate of beer (ie gross).

I used to love a bottle or three of 'dog' at one time And, of course, always strictly observing the correct etiquette of topping up a half pint glass from a pint bottle. I remember there was a fad at one time for mixing different beers in a pint pot. We used to drink "Black & tan" (½ pint bottled Guinness + ½ pint draught bitter), "Mixed" (½ pint draught bitter + ½ pint draught mild), and "Brown & bitter" (½ pint bottled brown ale + ½ pint draught bitter). It was considered sacrilege to use Newcastle Brown in a Brown & bitter, we always used an inferior drop like Mann's Brown for that

Yep black & tan is a classic. One of my all-time favorite beers was McEwans 80/- (80 Shilling) although sadly I don't think it's made any more. And then of course there was Slalom D, another long gone classic. That was a legendary brew back when I were a lad in the late 80's/early 90's....a very powerful pint that would put you on your back very quickly. There was a legendary pub in Newcastle called The Broken Doll, epicenter of the city's underground/alternative/rotten scene, and Slalom D was the house ale there. Friday & Saturday nights were interesting.

mike_mccue Are you saying that you feel people are "entitled" to more than 1.5% interest on their savings account? Actually when interest rates for credit and such from the same institutions are at 9-who-knows-how-high % it kind of makes one wonder...and then there is the issue of how much of a tax hit the interest on your savings has... The risk takers just hit a new high at the DOW. And getting weirder by the week.... Seems like anyone that wants to work at it can cash in on the times... no matter when that happens to be. ...precisely
