I turned down offers to audition for Hall & Oats and Uriah Heap (both in ~1978). Hall & Oats were kind of rising up and I couldn't stand them and Uriah Heap was trying to make a comeback of sorts.

Those I have a conscious memory of, there are some I also choose to forget.

Pink Floyd several times
Hawkwind with different line ups
Rick Wakeman
Phil Collins
Deep Purple
John Dankworth (Saw him for free as his drummer borrowed my drum kit)
Courtney Pine
Jean Michael Jarre (Docklands)
Thin Lizzy (Another free one as the band turned up without road crew myself and few others help lug the gear in)

A shameful second addendum to my list.

The Bay City Rollers, several times - I kid you not, before they hit the big time they were on the club circuit and used to play occasionally at a night club I used to frequent. (We went to this club mainly because they were not too fussy about age restrictions on admission and buying drink). They were a run of the mill band playing mostly covers, then suddenly they appeared on Top of the Pops with a new tartan boy band image and became an "overnight teenybob sensation".

It's true I have a lot of Jazz players in my list ...that's how I became celibate against my own will

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had a great guitar player.... John Pisano

I used to go out and hear John 2 or 3 nights a month when I lived in LA .
His Tuesday Guitar Nights would feature a Cream of the crop Jazz Guitarist playing along w John , a bassist + a drummer .

John is one of the best there ever was ..John Pisano's discography as a player is astounding .
He is still active as far as I know ...

all the best,

Combination of gun shy (hadn't played out in like 5 years) and not really "into" that band.

Some of these I have seen multiple times. I can't remember how many times I have seen AC/DC, Nazareth and ZZ Top. I know there are more lurking in the fog of drugs, alcohol and years.

I'm not necessarily a fan of all these. Most of them I was getting paid to be there so... Like C&W, my inner alcoholic loves it but I don't really care for it.

I see lots in these list that I would like to have seen. Weather Report w/Jaco would have been awesome. Because of timing and locations I never got to The Dixie Dregs or Pink Floyd either :(

FWIW, I turned down an audition for Lawrence Welk. :)

Re: Who have you seen live? 2016/12/12 17:13:40 (permalink)
My favorites are some of the times I've seen bands and wondered, "What are you doing here?"

A long time ago, I was attending a company event at DisneyWorld during one of those special nights when the park is "only open to High School Students" (plus a certain number of creepy corporate types). I was one of the creepy corporate types. Anyway, I was making my way to some ride, turned a corner, and there was Wang Chung. They were playing Dance Hall Days. I had to stop and watch to see if everybody was going to Wang Chung tonight. (The band did, but they were the only ones.)

In the early 80's, Chicago used to host Chicagofest down on Navy Pier. It was fantastic. For about $10, you could buy a wristband to spend the entire day seeing as many bands as you could squeeze into your day. I was rather poor, but I scraped the cash together and saw Cheap Trick, Point Blank (no, no one else remembers them, either), Shooting Star, the Doobie Brothers (I was underwhelmed), and several more that I really can't remember. It was funny to walk around through the crowd and see these guys walking around with the normal folk, trying not to be noticed.

Going back a little further, I was wandering around at the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane, WA and saw Grand Funk Railroad performing on an outdoor stage. The band piled together in one small circle on the stage, almost on top of one another, leaving the rest of the stage completely bare. In retrospect, I think it was a way to compensate for inadequate monitors. Bachman-Turner Overdrive was a bigger hit and the small crowd seemed to know who they were. It was a little strange to walk through the park and accidentally come across one of these bands. The surprise made it that much more fun.

You're all really old, aren't you. Most folks best times were 30 - 40 years ago!

But hey, I'm right there with ya'. There's no point in posting my list as it's similar to everyone else's. I loved the prog of course, but sprinkle in some Americana from The Boss, Buddy Guy, B.B., The Beach Boys and Santana. Season to taste with Canadians like Rush, Heart, Max Webster and Neil Young.

The Ones That Got Away:
Zepplin
The Stones
Jimmy Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Biggest regret

Regards, John

I saw them live at a festival.  Wasn't a fan until I saw their stage performance.  Now they're a favourite.

I will list only concerts that had an "Impact" on me;
Hendrix, Hollywood Bowl Aug '68
Alice Cooper, Pasadena Rose Palace Jan '70; musically, yawn, but Vince did hack a mannequin up with an ax
Mothers, Pauley Pavilion Aug '71, you can hear part of that performance on Just Another Band from LA
Aerosmith, Tacoma Dome Oct '94, took my then 16 year old daughter, finally brought home for me why I
wasn't a rock star. Smith is actually a pretty good band when Steven leaves the stage, with Steven amazing!
Santana, White River Amphitheater Sept '08, Carlos'  band ROCKS, best live band since The Mothers in '71
Everything else, Yawn...

Kenny,

I turned down offers to audition for Hall & Oats and Uriah Heap (both in ~1978). Hall & Oats were kind of rising up and I couldn't stand them and Uriah Heap was trying to make a comeback of sorts.

Why did you turn down the Uriah Heep audition?

Combination of gun shy (hadn't played out in like 5 years) and not really "into" that band.

Ed,
I'm glad James asked you why you made those decisions since I forgot to ask ...
I figured it may have been something to do with the small details / particulars along those lines
all the best,

Kenny

These are all I can remember

Jethro Tull
Billy Joel
Paul McCartney
Seals and Crofts

****Little River Band****
Eagles
Elton John

Opened for the Little River Band and Head East this past summer.  Had an absolute blast.
Tour manager for Head East is a great guy... so we'll probably do it again when they pass thru.

You're all really old, aren't you. Most folks best times were 30 - 40 years ago!

Yes, getting up there.

Funny enough, I did most of my concert going between the ages of 25 to 35.  I grew up in very northern Minnesota about 3 1/2 hours from any large concert venues; so for my first 25 years I saw only one live concert.  Rush, Grace Under Pressure was my first ever, in the 80's.

Short and sweet: Grand Funk in '71, Mott The Hoople opened; Ten Years After in early '72. Jeff Beck in '80 or '81, Rick Danko opened. David Gilmore around '87. Pearl Jam about a decade ago.
I decided early on that I don't like crowds.

I am selling my MIM Fender Stratocaster HSS, red and black. PM for more details.

Music Creator 2003, MC Pro 24, SONAR Home Studio 6 XL, SONAR  X3e, CbB, Focusrite Saffire, not enough space.
Everything is better with pie.
