Why was this thread locked?

There seemed to be a perfectly calm and rational discussion going on HERE.

I think Golding made some very good points too, he was undoubtedly getting a bit of a ribbing, albeit there was nothing malicious about the mickey taking. Just a bit of typical CH humour really, and hopefully he'll stay around and will get used to that style of banter.

And without meaning to appear like I'm harassing him, can anyone give me just one good reason why John has been given full moderating powers in the Coffee House?

Forgetting all that's gone before just for a brief moment, he never posts in here, and certainly does not understand how this place rolls.

In fact, it wasn't until I saw that he'd locked that thread that I even realised that he had that authority in here, so infrequent are his visits to our basement.

Cakewalk, this is not right. He has no affinity to the CH whatsoever, he's on record as not thinking very favourably of the CH regulars, and yet he has the power to lock threads and moderate others' comments.

Again, let me stress that this is nothing personal. He's just not, in my opinion, a very 'practical' choice to moderate this place.

Have to agree Steve, there was nothing in that thread that required it to be locked. No name calling or flaming going on, 'Godling' was presenting his point of view calmly and was being answered in the same manner.

Far too much 'hosting' going on IMO, it's getting tiresome.

And where are our 'home-grown' moderators in all this?

I'd always considered Wookiee, Beagle and Karyn to be good friends of mine.

Why are you three happy to stand aside and let this happen? Have you no shame? Have you no loyalty? Have you no principles?

Are the trappings of power so alluring that you are willing to turn your collective backs on the rest of us, and side with a bloke who ripped you all a new one, along with the rest of us?

I lost all respect for the three of you when you said and did absolutely nothing about John's appointment. And nothing that's happened since has changed my opinion one iota.

I know for a fact that there are a lot of others here who feel the same as me. But you three will no doubt be pleased to hear that most of them are too apprehensive about what would happen to them if they spoke up. Does that make you feel good - that your friends and acquaintances are too wary of the consequences to speak out?

I keep hearing that 'nothing's changed' and you are the same people, the same 'forum users' you were before.

Well, not from where I'm sitting you're not.

And that's a crying shame.

IMHO, two of the threads that were locked recently were locked for reasons which could apply to 99% of what's posted here.

"I see no point in letting this thread continue. " - Most threads don't have a point in the first place.

"there is nothing further to be gained from this." - Same as above.

My guess is that a bunch of folks must have reported those particular threads.

Have to admit I'm a bit baffled as well.  Hadn't seen or read that thread but did just now and it looked to me like folks were actually discussing something that happened in a completely different thread, had done so rationally, had actually calmed down and soothed the ostensible offended party and were just on the cusp of a big group hug when John inexplicably locked the thread.  In fact IIRC, the last post actually said (and meant) "welcome to the forum".  Guess we can't have that kind of talk around here.  What next?  Sheesh.

Would really appreciate some clarification from John as to why he took this action.  Maybe I missed something.  Hip me will ya, John?

Okay... I was trying not to say anything and you will notice my absence in the thread in question. I was asked to not discuss this anymore thus my silence. There was some stuff going on and it is now resolved. I accept Godling's apology and I apologize for calling him a "jackwagon".

Sorry for the disturbance. John was simply trying to retain some order so please do not blame him for what was a wee flare up between two users.

Also I am sorry if that is rather cryptic but really I've already said too much. It's done. All is well.

Although any objective person should have no trouble admitting that, separated from the contextual flow, "jackwagon" has such a wonderful, out-of-left-field almost endearing quality.  And rolls so smoothly and saucily off the tongue.  Sad, really, that a word with such sheer whimsy mixed with razor's edge clarity should be the cause of any great consternation.  But there you have it.  In any case glad the scrap...whatever it was...or was about...is behind us now.

Yawn.

 In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Agree. It may be valid but is a bit offensive for the reasons stated in the OP. The forum has become a wee bit like a neighborhood with a homeowners association that sends out letters about your lawn or some other nonsense but at least we don't have to pay dues... or do we? Heck, I'm not sure where my posts should go... I am glad to have overseers to put my junk where it belongs!

@Beepster
Thanks for popping in and acknowledging acceptance of my apology. And I accept yours also Beepster. Let's try to put this behind us and write it off as some community bonding where someone spiked the punch and some already emotionally stressed dude may have freaked out a bit (that's me I'm referring to here... just to be clear. lol).

Let's also have this include chatting with each other if you feel comfortable with that. I'll do my best to respect the topic and the posters should we cross discussion paths here. :)

@yoropal
The apology for 'jackwagon' was an indirect thing. It's not at all what this was about. I actually thought it was a great word choice also. I was offended... no mistake.. and I even made a small reference to it in the original thread... but took no harboured offense at that.

@everyonelse
I did not ask to have that 'theramin' thread closed.

Wookie has contacted me about this and asked that same question, so he seems to be on this.

I would also like to agree with everyone here and say that I was incredibly disappointed by the choice to lock that 'theramin' thread. Things were going very well, community relations were improving. The only reason I didn't complain about it being locked, was I felt I had already draw enough attention to myself. Fire-damage control had become more important than falling on the admins radar again.

I felt acknowledged... which directly led to my own apology in the matter. That the thread then got locked seemed 'trigger happy' in nature. Understandable I believe, but a mistake nonetheless. It should not have been locked imo. You lock a discussion when things spiral out of control... not when the community bonds in some way and tries to make things right.
