Windows 10 will be the last OS
I know it will be free for a limited time. I still love 7 and my M-Audio cards still work fine. 10 graphically still looks like 8. I wonder if 10 will be like Giveaway of the Day where you have to install it as soon as you get your license.
There's still so much speculation as how W10 will be handled like a subscription service.
Will it support legacy hardware that still has Vista and 7 drivers?
The MS compatibility tool for Windows 8 leaves hardware support unanswered.

I have the latest Win 10 Preview version 10130 installed. Sonar Platinum and my Roland Studio Capture work OK in Win 10. I just installed my Frontier Tranzport, in a Windows 7 compatibility mode, and it checks out OK in Sonar. The last drivers issued for the Tranzport were Vista drivers.
Microsoft must be getting close to the "RTM" version. The system I have Win 10 Preview installed on (on a separate hard drive) is a triple boot system, Win 7, Win 8.1 and Win 10 Preview. All prior versions, "Windows 10 Preview" was listed in the OS selection menu. With 10130 version it now reads "Windows 10".

That has really come a long way. Unfortunately, we're in a catch 22. REAL hardware support won't happen until users demand it from hardware makers, but there won't be many users until hardware support improves. Still, I may one day set up a box to try it out. It looks good for everything except audio. On paper. Actually the audio side looks good as well-on paper-for 2x2 at 48K/16. FOSS will probably be an awesome thing for my grandkids (currently 5 & 3). I'll focus on getting the youngsters to play instruments for now  . When they get older they'll probably have a full, multimedia iStudio on their phone(s), which will be implanted somewhere between their ears. Will that make stereo obsolete?

What is the catch with the "free" Windows 10? I've lived long enough to know that if something is free, there is a catch. I clicked the little icon and reserved a D/L for my W7 laptop. I guess I'll need to get my DAW out and set it up long enough to get it there too in case I want it.
I'm just not sure about this. The whole "free" thing worries me. Why is it free? What are they going to want from me later to make up for the "free" part?

No catch, MS wants to get everyone on Windows 10. They had some really bad press with Windows 8 (despite it actually being quite a good OS) and they don't want Windows 7 to turn in to another XP where people refuse to upgrade because they are convinced it is the last good OS ever. So they are trying to convince people to upgrade, and making the upgrade free makes it that much more tempting. They are hoping they can get the large majority of the Windows user base on to Windows 10 in a timely fashion.
We'll see if it works.

I don't have problems with Win7 x64 and don't currently see a good reason to chance issues just to get a 'free?' Win10 upgrade. I have no desire to give MS any more control over my OS than they currently have.( i.e. there is currently a little icon sitting at the bottom of my screen, which I can't get rid of, wanting me to get Win10...)
I wish Jim R. would chime in here with his opinion.

I plan on keeping Win 7 on my dual boot system as its needed to transfer patterns to my wife's Singer Embroidery machine. I have a USB/RS232C adapter but it will only work on Win 7, not Win 8 and not on the Preview versions of Win 10.
But, Win 7 is the new Windows XP. Support (fixes) have stopped. There are still some security updates but that will end at some point (before 2020). Like XP, or whatever older version of Windows, it will still work after 2020.
My main PC went down, Jan 2014 for warranty repair of the motherboard. I used my backup system that has Windows 8.1 on it. I never "missed a beat" either with Sonar projects or regular PC operations. I'll be upgrading that system to Win 10 since my testing of Sonar Platinum and my recording hardware all works with the Preview versions of Win 10.
Its been reported (I think on this forum) that Win 10 will have some advantages for audio and even lower latency. Exactly what the "advantages" are, I don't know.
It looks to me that the PC version of Win 10 is getting a free ride as Microsoft is updating their phone and tablets to Win 10 and like Apple and Android providing the new version free. Microsoft would like to have one current OS across all platforms.

The catch is it's only free after within one year of it's release. If you want to upgrade after that you will have to pay for it. So far I don't know if the license is like an OEM but worse when it comes to changes. Windows 8 OEM is better than W7 OEM. If anyone has W8 Pro you should be able to test W10 via the virtual machine in W8 Pro.

Windows 10 will probably require me to go to a new control surface as I'm sure my FW-1884 becomes obsolete. I seem to recall that even 8.1 did not recognize some users' FW-1884,

The way I'm reading it is that it is going to download when it is available. So does that mean it will just come down when MS wants it to or will you get a notification asking if it is ok? What if you are tracking when they decide to send it down?
It does say you will get a notification after it is downloaded then you can install it when you want.
I have tried to hide the notification in the task bar but it keeps popping up every time I restart the machine. If I knew it would not screw with my machine I would reserve it and let it DL in case I might want to install it someday but I don't trust MS.

I'm always off line when I do anything in Sonar (disable the network interface). That would eliminate any downloading interference with Sonar.

BTW, does anyone know if the upgrade route from win7 to win10 will be like an update (i.e. leaving all other applications in place) or will this require a full rebuild of everything ... if it's the later I may just download and install win10 on a 2nd HD, leaving the old one in place (but something in my conspiratorial mind tells me that Microsoft will probably not allow that) ...

Here is some info I got from the Windows 10 forum. I posted it in the Sonar forum Win 10 thread but I'll post it here too. It concerns upgrading and clean installs. Well, those of you who prefer clean install over the upgrade will be able glad to know that you will be able to perform a clean install of Windows 10 by wiping your hard drive after the upgrade. That is, once you successfully upgrade to Windows 10, you can clean install Windows 10 using the license. The information comes is straight from Gabriel Aul, the head of Windows Insider Program at Microsoft.
Although Microsoft has not provided much information about the clean install, Microsoft will likely allow users download Windows 10 ISO by entering Windows 10 product key that you get after the upgrade.
In short, it’s possible to perform clean install of Windows 10 once you successfully upgrade to Windows 10.
Can I clean install Windows 10 without upgrading?
No. If you’re coming from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, you must upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 installation to Windows 10 first. Once successfully upgraded, you will able to perform clean install of Windows 10.
In the meanwhile, if you’re on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 you can register for the free upgrade. And if you have already registered, we recommend you check if your computer and installed programs are compatible with Windows 10 using Upgrade Advisor in Get the Windows 10 app. And if you want to know what edition of Windows 10 you will get after the upgrade, go through our What version of Windows 10 will I get when I upgrade guide.

According to the app I only have one program that will not run on the lappy when/if I upgrade. And it's a program I can uninstall now as I don't use it.

Going to anyway. XP = clunky, no support, terrible interface compared to what 7/8 offer and God help you if you put the machine online and have stuff on it you don't want getting out because 0Day exploits were enmass. People who have the know how can now enter your system with no issue at all. This alone is why I refuse to work on company computers that have XP on it as it's a liability for me. Happy Computing. :)

I had to set Windows Update to 'Automatic' and restart before it would show up, even thought the system was already up to date. Try that and see what happens.

I went into my update menu and it was on there. Wasn't until I clicked it that I got the icon on the tray.
