stephen hawking says, "keep talking." i guess cw didn't hear, or was told, with fear of job loss from the mighty roland, to stfu... pardon my french, but when someone asks me a question and i stand there mute, it is NOT a strategy for winning friends and influencing people. and IS a bad business move. what do you think competitors would do if they knew cw was releasing a maintenance release after 10 months of silence? scurry to implement features to appear competitive as cw seems to do? a championship hockey player, when asked which team he'd rather face in the finals, said, "doesn't matter who, or how they play. if we play our game, we'll win." clean up your act, cw. your vow of silence doesn't change the fact that you've ignored your user community, those who buy your product, for almost a year. shameful... if you're trying to change that, have the courtesy to say something...

This is getting close to being locked, I'm afraid. CW has explained all this in other threads that needed to be locked, because there's just nothing else that can be said, unfortunately. I do agree that either an update or explanation after such a long time would have been nice. I do personally feel left out. I also agree that I don't want to buy X3 to fix X2 issues, unless CW can guarantee that X3 will be MUCH better tested. If there are bugs found in X3, I would sincerely hope CW will offer more patches/quickfixes more frequently vs. Service Packs like what Microsoft offers. These can all be rolled up into Service Packs, but the bottom line is this: I want Sonar to be better tested and more reliable. I don't want more features at a cost to get that. I would prefer to pay $100 for X2b than even $20 for X3. You can see what's important to me vs. what may be important to Roland. Anyone going to the Nashville NAMM show? Maybe CW will have something to say there.

I'm with you. Right now what's most important to me are reliability and stability in the feature set already offered in X2. Also, super tight interoperability with Mackie Control Protocol (MCP) control surfaces is very important to me. Although I'm anxious to hear something from Cakewalk I've resolved that probably won't happen; I assume they're being tight-lipped about releases for probably very good marketing reasons (though that doesn't help our natural curiosity as users). I am hoping that this time that has passed since the release of the X2a patch is being put to very good use bullet-proofing what I still feel is one of the most enlightened DAWs on the market.

Maybe Cakewalk is experiencing what the company I work for does almost every two years--reorganization. Usually, each reorg that happens causes chaos, inefficiencies and communication breakdowns. It takes us a couple of months to learn all the plans, know who's in charge of what department and understand and adhere to the "new business strategy." Overall, I haven't been on this forum for very long so I honestly don't know, but does any official Cakewalk employee/spokesperson ever speak up in THESE threads (i.e. not just the announcements section)? If not, then maybe we're our own worst enemy talking amongst ourselves. Granted, these forums are for users to help other users with problems, tips and tricks, offloading the burden from the company, but you'd think some PR folks would step in and hush the crowd every now and then right? But of course we want the Cakewalk psychotherapists, not the Cakewalk riot police!

Pay to have bugs fixed. Of course we will. $100 for a year's use of Sonar Professional is to be considered too much??????? Way silly. I prolly used Sonar for about 10 hours a week average. About 500 hours per year. Equates to about 20 cents per hour to use Sonar, Dimension Pro, Rapture, Zeta2, Audio Snap, VVocal, Guitar rig, Perfect Space, Session Drummer,.... for a $99 yearly upgrade fee. Just plain Stupid to argue for not paying to fix bugs. Big mistake: Cakewalk/Roland Managers deciding to charge $100 per upgrade for the X series instead of the historical $179. And waiting nearly 2 years between X1 and X2. They should have charged more. And updated more often to fix all the little bits, while adding features. Continuing Major problems: Focus on Xmas selling season. Way last century. Not selling yearly subscription/support services. (A year's worth of updates, purchased whenever.) Not providing a process for license transfer, including charging a fee ($25) to do so. (Almost all the business logic code is already written. CW gets new customer/user. Secondary market increases the value of the software..... No losers here.) Not charging enough. Not releasing fixes as soon as fixed. Not enough 3rd party support: Reaper has grown way fast because 3rd parties can program (extensions, macros, interfaces) and sell add-ons other than plugins. 3rd party support always increases a product's user base. And reduces promotion costs because the 3rd parties are sharing the activity. Biggest stupidity: not recognizing the forums are the best source of ideas, feedback, and Company support. It is the least cost channel for customer issue resolution. At least 2 full time, dedicated, persons should be assigned to the forums, and general communications. Well, don't get me started. ===================================================== This program was hand-coded in the Philippines, woven on native looms, and compiled with authentic colors. The slight variations and nail marks are visible because this software was made from recycled code objects, and applets. Inherent in this technique is the possibility of slight imperfections, which give this application its unique and desirable characteristics.

I have no problem with the yearly paid updates and I understand I'm paying for the continued progress of Sonar (both new features and fixes)...
That's fine with me... I do consider it very inexpensive for the fab tools I get!
...and I don't really car about free extras tho I appreciate them very much.
I also understand that many people are having joyous experiences with X2a...
I am merely put off by the fact that there are major bugs which I suffer with in everyday work and I remain hopefully anxious for fixes to relieve the stress.... Soon? <sigh>...

I am not in any way excusing the history of unfinished features, everlasting bugs, and unusable functions. I do think lots of these problems are directly related to my previous comments: low upgrade pricing, uneven revenue stream because of focus on version releases. I do not like the X series because of the stupidly wasted space, cluttered/menued interface, non-configurability. I mostly use 8.5.3: more tracks on screen, layers, uncluttered BUTTON bars with useful 1-click access to what I use, right-click happiness,.... Would like to use the newer browser. But even that applet is not completely implemented.

Keni, To your main point, I personally don't see a X2b coming. It's going to be X3 for the next installation would be my best guess. I think take lanes are limited and unfinished. I try to use them for what I know they can do. I personally would like to be able to quick mix the volume of lanes within a track to get an idea to grow from when I'm soon writing and just want to keep the same setting and do a couple of different parts to the song. I would like to be able to explode selected lanes into tracks. I also don't like that X2 doesn't always remember which state I left the track in sometimes (lanes on/off). I think - I know what you mean about the zooming problems - at least from my perspective of it being awkward/clumsy.

Ok, now I will certainly agree with a lot of what's been said, but I will agree with this the most: The forum is far easier on us (more incentive, anyway) to give feedback and suggestions here rather than through the Bug-Report or Feature-Request portals. Those offer no evidence that anyone even reads them, and they offer far less weight without others being able to chime in on great ideas or bugs. I know this from experience. My past company had similar channels. The forum gets the best input and highest visibility. The standard bug-report or feature-request portals are viewed only when the company decides to or has time to peruse them, AND if they decide some is too outlandish, they're simply just ignored. In the case of Cakewalk, we get hardly any, if any feedback from submissions, there's literally, and I mean literally no incentive to even use those tools. For example, unless you can reliably recreate a bug every time with the steps you follow, what's the point? Here, at least it has a much higher chance of at least some chance of portal feedback from the admins, or others who might have input or suggestions. My perception, as contradictory as it may actually be, is that the forum is the best tool to use for feedback. I'm truly sorry to say that, but it's simply the truth as I see it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this Though sadly, I doubt we'll ever see the button bars back. I once suggested a customisable Button Module for the Control bar, but that obviously fell on deaf ears. The extra clicks thing, and the 'hidden'/illogical menus still drive me mad with frustration even after all this time. To this day, when I want to insert extra measures, I still automatically hit Insert on the menu bar instead of Project to access the dialogue.

Here's a question for those of you hovering between jumping ship or sticking with Cakewalk. If all your Pro-Channel modules had also been made available as standard VST plug-ins (like the CA-2A now is) so you could use them in any host program, would that make your decision to defect easier? Some might suggest that making them proprietary and only able to work inside the Pro-Channel was a shrewd bit of business.

I imagine I'd simply go back to Sonar 8.5.3 as I know of nothing better... The PC Modules are very good and I've grown to depend on them... There are a few new commands that are cool (X2), but not enuf to make up for all the issues I have with it... Keni

+1 I'm with you all the way here. But be careful JM, you're in imminent danger of bringing some much needed common sense to the discussion What you describe here is exactly what happens to a program when its creators listen to the fanboys, and not the people who should really matter - the critics. I've said it countless times and I'll say it again - a company moves forward, not by basking in the adulation of its adherents, but by listening to those who are not completely happy with their product. And long term, everybody wins. I was just reading another thread where the OP was asking if a feature he liked in 8.5 was available in X2. Instead of simply saying "No", the sycophants, who couldn't bring themselves to admit in public the failing in the newer version, simply skate around the issue and offer workarounds. Sadly, we get what we deserve.

WDI I really wish cakewalk would fix all issues in a release before moving forward on a new paid for release. It's been my main concern with cakewalk for a long time.
For instance, it was well known that there was issues with the old track lanes that were not resolved release after release after release.
The implementation of mute automation as a separate control and not writable from a control surface is another one. Mute automation should work like any other automatable control in console view. Seems most cohesive and logical.
Then there is the issue of breaking control surface support with every new release. This should have been taken care of before moving to a new release. Cakewalk completely has ignored these issues release after release and I think they are paying for it now. Not the customers.
I realize the company has to make money on a new release. But losing customers is also a way of losing money.
YES! YES! YES! 100% +1 Absolutely Without a doubt!!! Mike

I'm glad to hear from another who sees things somewhat as I do... I frequently wonder who is making these decisions and try to imagine what work they do with it and how... Obviously way different than myself or the majority of musician engineers I know... Sonar's personalization abilities thru 8.5.3 were one of Soar's most endearing qualities... Now lost to the whims of who/why... I'm still hoping they will return these ideas once they get over the new GUI and touch needs... Keni

That's something I've always wondered as well. Who is the best person or group to come up with color schemes to replace custom schemes? And who decides what can be altered vs. not? Microsoft, Apple, Ubuntu, and then all of the DAW makers tend to make decisions based on a very limited scope. I don't want to say Skylight is ugly, but yes, there are some things I'd like to customize for easier viewing. The thing is, I wasn't consulted on this. Are Beta testers asked for this? I wasn't picked to become a tester, so I honestly don't know. Anyway, it's like Acura, for example. They made some incredible-looking cars in 2004-2008. I love the shape and form of my Acura TL. In 2009 Honda did something that I strongly believe negatively affected their ability to sell the TL. They made it larger and tons uglier. I absolutely hated that car. So, what if I were in the room when it was being decided to choose that design? I truly wonder how they'd have felt if I said, "It's ugly and isn't going to sell like the Accord". Would they care? Or is it simply a call on what designer pulls so much weight? It's silly to place so much trust in designers for many companies. Great ideas come out of that, but some of the best ideas aren't conjured by professionals. In fact, those go unnoticed because the idea was brought up by someone with no clout in that industry. SteveStrummerUK Here's a question for those of you hovering between jumping ship or sticking with Cakewalk. If all your Pro-Channel modules had also been made available as standard VST plug-ins (like the CA-2A now is) so you could use them in any host program, would that make your decision to defect easier?
If I felt than that the Pro-Channel modules were indispensable, then perhaps. But alas, they were not. I've gone ahead and ordered Cubase 7. The grass may not be greener, but a different shade of brown can also inspire. KEv

This is my last Monday to check website for X2b update. But unfortunately... today I'm going to order Cubase 7 too. I need a stable Daw to live, i'm sorry...

Cubase 7 is amazing. Absolutely amazing. The plugins alone are worth it. Cakewalk have a lot of catching up to do!!

Most of the ProChannel stuff is to lock you into the Cakewalk eco system. You cant use it outside of Sonar in the majority of cases. That's part of the reason I wont touch ProChannels with a bargepole.

brconflict That's something I've always wondered as well. The design brief for the X series feels like its been aimed at the hobbyist market more than the pro one. The huge icons, the low number of tracks visible, being touch friendly, the large toolbar, low level of UI customisation. Feels like Roland is doing to Sonar what Apple did with Logic i.e. bought for the tech and the clever people. Before we know it X2 will have been out for 1 year and we've had 1 update. It is an absolute disgrace. Cubase 7 on exactly the same rig is absolutely bomb proof - 5 updates in a shorter period of time. I've gone through the bug raising and wasted a lot of time in the process only to be told that the product works as expected, isn't a bug or check my hardware. Futile and a waste of time. It was actually the final straw as I couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel. At least with Honda - the wheels don't fall off! They still get the basics right even if the design if a bit f. ugly.

brconflict Anyway, it's like Acura, for example. They made some incredible-looking cars in 2004-2008.
I liked the RSX. Affordable, attractive and great little car with an awesome interior. They dumped production after 2005, I believe. Dumb. Well, my Sonar X2aP seems to be getting better. I had one WSOD crash the other day while turning on console emulators down the line while audio was playing. Sorry, but my bad habits don't allow me to not audition constantly while making changes. I increased my buffer size in an attempt to cure the crash. More testing to follow. If not getting better, then I will be buying a Firewire card and going forward with that. I will retract my statement about jumping ship with Sonar. I am vested, and I want to see it get better. I know the system, and I know how to use it...mostly. ProChannel modules are a convenient plus and something definitely unique to Sonar. I like the convenience, I suppose. On the other hand, there are some great non-ProChannel plugins out there. So is it really necessary to have the ProChannel strip in the first place? At the end of the day, what difference does it make whether the plugin is a ProChannel or in the FX Bin? Overall, I like using ProChannels, which is why I upgraded to Producer in the first place. As long as Cakewalk programs QUALITY in the ProChannel modules, then I will usually try to use them over other, similar plugins (compressors, saturation, and EQ definitely). However, I don't agree with paying MORE for any updates. Come on now...
